      How long the spark is? That's why you use resistor plugs, high resistance leads and high energy coil , it makes the duration longer. Higher cylinder pressure reduces the spark duration, like with more boost.

      See how much the lower end on a '78 W-72 400 will take with 7-1 comp, Eaton 122 blower not working very hard blowing through a Holley Super Sniper 1250 with undercar T4/T3 hybrid turbos blowing into BMW i745 intercoolers that takes over from the Eaton at 3psi.
      ... so I don't have to blow mine up finding out, LOL !

    • @patrickshaw8595
      @patrickshaw8595 2 года назад +1

      @@scottk2342 I put the engine together in 1979 when I was 16. The big valve heads I put on it off a 455 dropped the compression so low that - at that time - I had no idea why it would easily kill a built Turbo 350 with 2000 rpm torque - but the darned thing hated normal (5400) Pontiac rpms.
      35 years later I got to reading casting codes and looking up specs and - yep, 6.75 to one CR.
      By then I had built a hundred low buck truck pulling blown big block Chevys and a dozen (cost no object) race winning PW and Wright radials - so my high school ride (gold '72 Le Mans) got (low buck) twin charged and injected.
      Block's never been apart except for GTO oil pump recently.
      Certainly the W-72 rods and pistons are going to be the weak link - but when I really lay into it it's the turbos, the icewater coolers and E85 making the horsepower. Under those conditions the Eaton 122 is still being driven 2.1 over - but it's just recirculating dry air. It's "along for the ride".
      Low compression is pretty kind to reciprocating parts - and turbos are too when you got some gas pressure cushioning on the exhaust and intake stroke.
      What guys don't realize is that a 13.5 compression big-cam motor will have power pulses as short as 25 degrees crank rotation.
      A stock 10.5 CR classic muscle car engine will have about 60 degree pulses.
      A buttery-smooth passenger car classic V8 will have 90 degree pulses and they pull smooth as a turbine because the throws are 90 degrees apart, too.
      But when you turbo a low compression marine or aviation V8 and those 120-130 degree pulses are OVERLAPPING - Well lets just say that if half the time the crank has TWO fourteen square inch pistons pushing down on it and the rest of the time ONE of them is in "the meat" of a power stroke - it pulls like a pissed off elephant.

    Any chance of coving the Inline 6 . Here in Australia we are big fans of the inline engine. Off late the Barra turbo has been very popular but my personal favourite from the early 70s produced 302bhp from the showroom floor from a 265cube donks. Those 265s with today's technology are seeing 450 to 480 rwhp NA. Would love to see your knowledge with these

    The ignition system and spark propagandation is a very overlooked and misunderstood subject, so that would be cool to get straightened out. I found you recently an I have confused myself with so much research on a 283 build. Guy went 409 so I have a barn find 1962 283 2 barrel from an Impala with 50,000 miles complete with working power glide except crank pulley , water pump , starter .
    So gas prices and my 1988 11mpg 2500 silverado got me making another shop parts chaser truck . I am replacing the 250 6 in my 68 c10 long bed step side . Ya theyre kinda ugly but rare and she rides like a "70 Le Sabre" now with 4" drop springs . I put a 700 r4 in it and the original 250 engine just seemed weird on the 700 never felt good.
    So I found for $100 a set of 520 power pack heads hardened seats an valve guides just done . I also scored a street dominator intake for $50 and a like new no joke eat off the thing , Holley 80457_2 for $100 came off running 302 ford . It is set up for a 700 r4 so that saves a lot of TV cable geometry. I also bought ; from a hot chic , a set of brand new long tube inch and a half headers my rams head one had a crack .
    After reading this book I have written I hope you are still with me . I plan on running original bearings if they are good , car ran fine had good oil pressure . Hopefully just replacing oil pan gasket rear main new oil pump while I am there , then new timing chain and cam .
    Heres my question finally . What cam and lifters think pushrods are missing also ? What to degree it to ?
    I plan or running a 1996 s10 convertor . I wont have ac , no power steering or power brakes was planning on an electric fan and water pump I am a fan of both these no parasitic draw free HP . Not building a drag truck but dont want a complete dog. I guess I want max torque and rough idle wont be a problem . I have 27" tall tires and a 3:73 posi . Cams and boobs make me a lil crazy . If you dont respond Im grab the Duntov 3030 and install her straight up

    • @patrickshaw8595
      @patrickshaw8595 2 года назад +1

      @@sexyfacenation Good toolmakers and engineers know that the most bedrock repeatable measurements are taken with extremely simple instruments. Look up Johanssen Blocks and what a Surface Plate is. Also study the mechanism part of Scanning Electron Microscopes. Realize that complicated stuff is for lazy people who are not seriously concerned about getting things exactly right - only convenience.
      For instance - what does any O2 sensor ever made tell you about mixture on an engine cylinder that's not running? What about when when it's only firing every other power stroke? 10% of the time? Or with very very delayed ignition timing?
      Keep in mind the K.I.S.S. principle has always been the Holy Grail of Russian Military Engineering and it allowed a country with a GDP less then Texas's to face us as equals in the Cold War. Seems the only time my country (The USA) ever felt pressed to resort to K.I.S.S. was for the Apollo Moon Landings And Returns and it worked beautifully like nothing before or since.
      So, yeah - Color Tunes. They are a PITA to use. But when you need to SEE how a cylinder is running - then nothing else will do, Kid.
      You're welcome.

    I look forward to seeing your spark anemometry presentation. It is a very interesting subject that lead to things like the Saab ignition system that uses the spark plug as a misfire sensor, and many other interesting advancements. The answer to your question of how long the spark is, depends on more than a few things. One being a velocity that bends the ion field away from the plug. The spark has to follow the ion field to ground. That length will also vary considerably, far more than 050 as well. Awesome to see Silbourne and hear the both of you talk about things from the past.
