Im in the US, zone 5 and have completely the opposite experience with Charlotte. No disease, blooms profusely, blooms face the sun. one of my favorites. Love your reviews Ben!
I have two of these, and yes, they are the total drama queens of the garden. Mine leafed out in May but then remained stunted for most of the summer. No new canes, no blooms, nothing. Finally I amended the soil around the area with compost and worm castings and they've just now started caning out and budding! I've not experienced the disease issues you've had but I also live at a much higher, dryer, and windy altitude on the eastern slope of the Colorado Rockies. I know the U.K. can be very rainy, which is why it's so green and gorgeous, but perhaps little Charlotte is happier in dryer climates? All that said, she has given the most underwhelming performance out of all my David Austins. :/
Oh no! I just ordered this rose. I was wanting a soft yellow that could stand hot sun. I fear i made a mistake. It is not due till next year so hopefully they will let me make another selection. I don’t need a rose so susceptible to problems!
Could you do a feature on Brother Cadfael Ben? Bought mine a few years ago now. Highly under rated. Amazing flowers & scent. I note it's back available at DA at the moment as a bare root.
Good afternoon Gavin I’m sorry but Brother Cadfael has been removed from my collection as you say the blooms are beautiful the scent is stunning but for me it was far too weak and produced far too Few blooms and I removed it from my personal collection a few years back I am however very glad to hear that you enjoy yours
