"I'm black, they never let me forget it.
    I'm black alright...
I never let them forget it".
--Jack Johnson (Heavyweight Boxing Champion 1908-1915)
Back in 2016, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, and McCain, along with Reps. Peter King, R-New York & Gregory Meeks, D-New York, petitioned Obama Admin to grant Jack Johnson a pardon. The bipartisan group of lawmakers sent a letter to Obama White House asking that the pardon be given in honor of the 70th anniversary of the boxer's death. Disappointingly, President Obama failed to do the right thing.
Ironically, on 05/24/2018, Prez Trump did the right thing! A posthumous Pardon was awarded to boxer Jack Johnson.
"Today I've issued an executive grant of clemency, a full pardon, posthumously, to John Arthur 'Jack' Johnson ...The first African-American heavyweight champion of the world, a truly great fighter. Had a tough life".
Johnson was a proud man who rightfully believed he was equal to anyone of color. During those days it was unacceptable for a Black man to love a White woman.
"We have done something today that was very important, because we righted a wrong," Trump said. "Jack Johnson was not treated fairly & we have corrected it. I'm very honored to have done it."
Interestingly Jack Johnson passed away on June 10th 1946...four days before President Trump was born.
    ;-)

EVR Almere, I beg to differ with you. Jack Johnson is on a very short list of possible GOAT heavyweight boxers. You wrote, "it was all brute force". I do not see that. Johnson did not beat Jim Jefferies with brute force. He was a defensive wizard that wore down his opponents and eventually KO'd them. Have you ever watched the CHAMPIONS FOREVER Documentary hosted by Reggie Jackson? During the dinner portion the immortal Larry Holmes gave Jack a tremendous compliment. Larry Holmes said, "I could have beat Joe Louis, Ali and Marciano" Holmes continued, "The only one that would have given me problems was Jack Johnson". Read between the lines, Holmes was saying that Johnson would have given any heavyweight champion a tough fight.

We as people of color understand this but just like in boxing today black fighters find similar issues but it's promoters and racsit so called boxing experts. Ali, Mayweather and host of other fighters of color face people such as Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley who disrespect fighters of color even at times tarnishing their names or talking about issues that have nothing to do with their boxing careers. Look at Ward and how he was treated by these so called boxing experts who were upset about his wins over the Russian. In the state of America with a President such as Trump are we to believe race and prejudice doesn't enter the Boxing World.

Peeped this in 1913 Johnson who was also a free mason. Did you know his.masonic lodge was suspended until 1913??? I did my research. I even saw him give a white fighter a free masonry handshake. He lost that fight in round 26. It was the they said he thrown... Thinking how influential he was, he knew what he was doing. Physically not beatable. But he wanted that life. He choose to be flamboyant, uncharacteristic, there wasn't a white man to challenge him physically. But the system could and did. Think of 1913 time frame. Not just free mason but Prince Hall, Alpha, Omega fraternities, a lot was going on.

He was indeed the Muhammad Ali of his era ever so dare to stand against the Whites.
And Jack Johnson was so hated and despised by the Whites though it was no fault of his.
Remember then in the early years of the 20th century it was common for Whites to frown upon and look down on blacks especially in the Southern States.
Unfortunately for Johnson he boxed in an era where racism still rule the roost. And that came to a hilt when James Jeffries was coaxed out of retirement to challenge Johnson for the title. That fight in 4 July 1910 was racism at its worst with the Whites hoping that the undefeated Jeffries would finally end Johnson's nine year unbeaten record. Not only that but that of Johnson's outrageous behaviour in bedding and marry a white woman that apparently angered and despised by many Whites.
Johnson held on to his title until that fight with the much more taller Jess Willard at Havana Cuba in 1915.Little did one expect Johnson to relinquish his title that he had held for seven years since wresting it from Tommy Burns at Sydney Australia on 26 December 1908.That day on sweltering heat he went down for the count and did not bother to raise up lending credence that he had given up his title without a whimper just to satisfy the Whites? It may be so but it is very hard to swallow that.Well it maybe Johnson saying,"Well that is it and I think my reign as the champion is over,"

    • @TheNewHugeCountryBoys
      @TheNewHugeCountryBoys 2 года назад

Dude was beat by Willard , Johnson's title defenses were laughable almost all against old people or middleweights, always drew the color line after winning the title and was usually inactive from 1912 on. Willard was a strong man with endurance and gave a beating to the old out of practice and shape Johnson.
