Fleabag said this season was a love story, and it was, the love between her and Claire was tremendous, and even more, she learned to love herself again
Fleabag is a love story - of self love and sisterly love. As someone with a sibling - “the only person I’d run through an airport for is you” moves me to tears. The dad pointing out the similarities between Fleabag and her mum is such a nice callback to season 1 episode 1 where he says something similar which is meant as a dismissal of Fleabag’s genuine cry for help, but here it is meant sincerely and as a compliment- serves as a nice indicator for the growth of that relationship too. Even the “smiles and charm” line is one her father says to her after her mum died, which is a shoe in for all the feelings they have for each other but can never express because emotional constipation and britishness. Also, I’ve also wondered if the fox could represent the baggage from the Priest’s previous life, before he found the church, and it hints at his alcoholism and promiscuity and whatever else he struggled/struggles with, which is why it haunts him the way it does.
Oh I love that idea about the fox! It is the part of him that he is afraid still wants to scavenge for comfort in unsavoury, marginal places even as he strives for God's love, painfully alone.
I’ve gotten so attached to fleabag so much I get sad when she says goodbye to us. I love a character who is so flawed we can’t help but love her despite her mistakes. I just wanted to comfort her
Martin’s monologue was a genuine moment of honesty from him in my opinion . Up until this point, Martin has been painted as a largely one-dimensional antagonist-one of the few one dimensional "bad" people in the series (you can argue that boo is seen as a one-dimensional "good" person but this, in my opinion, is because she is seen through rose tinted flashbacks). His brief moment of honesty forces us to confront the layered uncomfortable reality that he’s a broken person trying, and failing, to love in a way that keeps people close rather than driving them away. It disrupts our moral certainty and humanises someone we’ve been conditioned to dislike. We are forced to empathise, even momentarily, with him. It's all part of the series' theme of flawed humanity (although, to be fair, he is still ultimately a douche bag in my humble opinion).
I do really love the line in a previous episode where it's clear he did have some solid reasoning from his misguided perspective (his abhorrent, defensive view that Fleabag was rubbing the failed pregnancy in Clare's face) - he doesn't become a likeable person but he becomes a much better character.
I love Fleabag's bittersweet ending. The priest saying, "It'll pass" is devastating and then him saying he loves Fleabag too is even more devastating. I love that PWB decided to end it there. Perfection. So glad you watched the show!
There are so many good shows, but this one is special. In 12 short episodes people become so attached and invested in these characters- that's incredibly rare to accomplish in literally 6 hours of content. Phoebe's writing and the acting of all of the characters is just incredible, and you can find yourself relating to these people even if you've never experienced the same situations as them. I love Fleabag, and although I wish the show was longer I loved the way it ended.
I think that is so beautifull to acknowledge love that you have for another person, and they have for you. And that nothing can come out of it, and that it is okay. I had this situation once. It feels so freeing in it's sadness, it's love, it's fullfillment. It captured it beautifully. Pheobe is a Poet. Period.
so i actually see the fox as a symbol of the priest’s life before going to faith. he says a few things to indicate that he has ghosts in his past that still haunt him. i think that’s why he’s always getting spooked thinking she’s a fox, and why she sees the actual fox and points after him but stays behind. the fox will never stop following him because it’s his past. and to the priest, fleabag is a similar temptation that he faced in the past before finding refuge in church. i also liked ur perspective on fleabag’s atheism being a factor in why it’s sad. as an agnostic myself, i’d never even considered that as a big deal that she’s letting him go for something she doesn’t believe in. but thats a great observation.
It feels too pointed to be random: do we think the priest was m*lested be his brother? I wondered if the Fox was also related to his sexuality, but I could totally be wrong.
His brother is a pedophile, and it gets brought up in the very first episode. I think the priest has sexual trauma in his past and that's part of why sex in general is something he may have decided to stay away from and especially in this instance with Fleabag, someone who has used her sexuality to avoid feeling, or gain a sense of purpose... It's dangerous for him. I like that they didn't come right out and confirm anything but it feels suspicious to me.
@@homeiswonderlandYou are the only other person I have ever seen say this and I actually just commented the exact same thing. I don't think the brother being a pedophile was random and I think that the priest probably has sexual trauma in his past which plays into his relationship to the church and sexuality in general, as well as his relationship to this woman who uses sex for self-esteem and also to avoid love & being known. ("I'm just trying to get to know you" "well I don't want that.") The number one predictor of substance abuse in adults is childhood sexual trauma. It would explain the alcoholism. As well as a choice of profession where he could avoid sex and all of its complications by design. I like that they didn't come right out and slap us in the face with this information. We could be right about the priest and we could be wrong but especially the fact that he mistakes her for the fox...I don't know I see the vision
I believe her dad and the godmother really love each other. Love takes different shapes. Things that might be seen as scary in the other person, it can also keep you grounded. If that is what one needs.

I have absolutely loved all of your fleabag reactions! You are so intelligent and eloquent with your opinions and feelings, which is so rare to see in movie/tv reactors. Thank you so much for these videos, cant wait to watch your videos in the future! :)
I love when the cats make an appearance! I found your channel from Fleabag and I’m so glad that I did. It’s been so fun to watch with you! Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Fleabag is going into history, thats for sure. I dont think theres ever gonna be another show like this one. And also I DO really hope you get to Schitts Creek at some point.
I think what I love the most about this show is how the characters grow. It's not linear and pretty, we end the show knowing they still have things to work on, but we feel so proud of them because they came so far. Fleabag been so mature to admit her love and accept that that's all it an be. It's not easy, it's sad, but she understands. And she doesn't need us anymore, she doesn't need to escape, she can deal with stuff now. I love what you said about leaving space for compassion. Like you always say, these shows teach us something, and you taught that.
I just KNEW you would love Claire breaking up with Martin!! It's so weird and hard for me to hate him, because that actor plays my favourite character in Stranger Things 😂
I’m so sad this is over but it’s so perfect. You’re also reacting to one of my other favourite shows so I’m enjoying catching up with those. Guess I’ll have to finally pick up Interviewed With A Vampire too!
Loved watching Fleabag with you. There is a series called 'Spaced', aired in UK around 2000, with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (they are famous for the films 'Shawn of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz'). Each episode is 30 minute long and concludes in two seasons. It is not very famous outside of UK but they are still one of my favourite series of all time! love from Japan
i love this show sm and loved your commentary for it! it is a funny show but deep as well so it´s good someone actually pauses and thinks and talks about it:)
Thanks for the great reactions and analyses on this show; we enjoyed it very much! It's good enough to know "she's gonna be allright". Have a merry Christmas and all the best for coming year and coming reactions from the Netherlands!
This was such a great journey ! Claire and Boo mean a ton to me and this show is just incredible Can someone put him onto Bojack Horseman and Succession?? I'd just love to hear his thoughts and insight 😔
What a series! Thank you for the thoughtful reactions. I will definitely check out some of your other ones, I'm a big fan of Hannibal and Derry Girls. Btw- love the inclusion of AOT in your outro :)
Awesome! Thank you! I hope you find loss of the same in my other videos. And you staying till the end of the video to even recognize the aot music shows me you're such a real one. Much love. By the way Reiner is also my favorite character. Awesome profile picture
You said you'd like to watch another show that is similar in terms of being short and sweet, and I think This Way Up would fit the bill perfectly! It doesn't end quite as neatly as Fleabag, but it's so beautiful and funny and has a really strong sisterly relationship at the centre of it too. Highly recommend!!
I’m relatively new to your channel and I’ve been loving your reactions! You’re very thoughtful with your reviews and very intuitive. I think you’d like the series Dark, which I know was on a poll of yours. Extremely good writing and storyline, it’s the kind of show you have to have full attention to enjoy and understand and I think you’re the perfect person to react to it. Great work!
Now that you’re finished with Fleabag, I have a few suggestions for smaller series with half-hour episodes: first of you can check out Phoebe’s earlier one-season show, “Crashing,” which isn’t as deep as Fleabag, but is a lot of fun and full of the similar memorable characters. Then you can check out a mind-blowing British show called “I May Destroy You.” I heard you mention “The Good Place.” Yes! Well worth watching. And also a Netflix show called “Dead to Me,” which is a thriller and absolutely hilarious but is also a show about mourning.
Excellent 🎁 gift. Thank you for your insightful commentary on this series. I've seen the series nearly 20 times now, and you made me realize a few things still. It really is one of the best written series ever. You are doing a great job at this! And I look forward to seeing more content! (I still think you should one day see Mr. In-between.... even if it is not on RUclips.) Anyways, here's to a great New Year for you and your family! 🎉
(watch to the very end!) - Endnote: "Fleabag: The Scriptures" by Phoebe Waller-Bridge | Nov 26, 2019 - Is available through most public libraries, Hardcover & Ebook.
Been lurking through these reactions but have loved rewatching the series with you! Longshot suggestion for another series that has a lot of similarities to Fleabag but a much more realistic style is Looking-- 2 seasons and a finale movie, follows a group of gay male friends in San Francisco and is mostly centred around the main character "looking" for love/connection. EDIT: just saw you watched All of us Strangers and Looking is from the same director/writer!
Frank, the closest program/movie that I can think of from the male side of Fleabag's plight is a Steven Soderbergh (written and directed), movie from 1989 [ before I give you the title, be aware that there are no gratuitis or major demonetizing scenes to get it blocked ] - "Sex, Lies and Videotape" - 1989 - No big production, a story, personal issue driven movie. Trivia from IMDB, with no spoilers: "The film was playing in Berlin's largest movie theaters when the Berlin Wall fell. A lot of East Germans crossing over to West Berlin went to see it, expecting Western-style porn." & "The film was inspired by Steven Soderbergh's own failed relationship. "I drove the most important woman in my life to leave because I didn't want to be in the relationship but couldn't just say, 'I don't want to be in this,'" Soderbergh told Film Comment. "So I was very deceptive about how I got out of it. And then once I was out of it, I couldn't even allow it the dignity to die properly. I kept stringing it out and not letting it go and then I got involved with some other people." After, Soderbergh was able to reconnect with that person; "We were able to be friends," he noted."
I hope that maybe you could convince Foxtaco to react to Fleabag! I think he might like it...but Fleabag is quite a niche fandom... There aren't a lot of us out there... So I'm not sure if we will be able to convince him ourselves to watch it. It's such an amazing experience though ... And he is so in tune with like the psychology of the characters in the shows that he's watching ....I think he would really really enjoy it!
