The thing with Claire for me (no spoils, but you ll see this commentary throughout this season) is that she is just as lonely as Fleabag and i might even say she is damaged just as well. Fleabag damaged because of her grief (mom, boo) AND her actions
and her way of dealing with it is to be open about it (in the wrong ways, but still)
Claire, on the other hand - is damaged because of Mom AND NOT taking any actions. She is displeased with everything in her life, but she is not acting on anything to be changed, hence youll bury yourself in insecurities, youre bottle up all your emotions like she says to make her feel happy and her way is dealing with it - is keeping it to herself and pretend that everything is fine. Which is just as sad of the way as Fleabag's

AFAIK this was the ep they submitted to the Emmys, and it's no surprise she won so many awards. Like it's SUCH a funny episode, but equally sad at the same time. It takes real talent to write an ep of a comedy that just takes place in one location and have it be one, if not the best episode of a series - esp when it deals with serious issues.

"His mother was originally a LESBI-" 🤣🤣🤣
The father never being able to finish a sentence kills me every time haha I love his awkwardness and inability to communicate properly and yes, he is an idiot many times but you still notice that he cares about his daughters and really tries (much more than my father at least haha).
And I think we all love the hot priest ❤️ right? The fact that Fleabag was saying that no one had talked to her in over an hour and he just then spoke to her says a lot.
This episode is a masterpiece, every dialogue is perfect, no wonder it won so many awards!
And responding to some comments I read about religion, I don't think that's going to be a problem at all. And I don't think you have to be religious to be able to enjoy this season because this is just not the focus really, I can understand the concern, I'm from a religious family but personally I'm away from that right now. But Phoebe will not disappoint you, I assure you.
Anyway, thanks for doing just one episode at a time, this season deserves it.

She's such a tokenizer 🤣. Her and the dad were so painfully real I felt so awkward! Lol. The dad is adorably inept. Someone said this is the first time he's talked to Fleabag since season 1, hence him missing her birthday. And like that kind of stuff is just awful. I don't think I can say that I think he's a GOOD Dad. He's clearly not sufficient. But then you see him trying so damn hard in his own ways and even though it doesn't come close to being ENOUGH, you realize he's not a BAD dad either necessarily? He's just... Inept. Because of all of his own stuff. Which isn't an excuse but it's life. It doesn't make his love and effort and less genuine. This show has such realistic characters I just love it so much.
And yes the priest talking to her right in that moment was so good!! I just love him so far. How straight forward and non judgmental he feels is such a contrast to the family lol.
I'm glad to have some reassurance on the religion stuff! I trust Phoebe but it was hard not to get a bit hesitant in episode 2.
And absolutely!! I think it'll be better this way!

BTW, the waitress Maddie Rice, played Fleabag when the one-woman show was touring. For most of the episodes, a lot of the extras/background actors and even character/street names outside of the main cast are either the crew (I.e. producers, director editors, etc) or just friends of the show. This really is a family/friends affair.

She was incredibly sweet and down to earth.

I think the dads gift is quite well planned really. First it’s not actually for her on her birthday which would be a bit more odd but it’s just used as a vehicle like the holiday equivalent of “I was just in the neighbourhood”. He’s presumably not seen her in a while and we know he likes to arrange for there health in an indirect manner being the repressed Brit he lovingly is. He doesn’t say she needs counselling just that she could use it if she’s struggling and rather than being money which she wouldn’t spend on counselling of her own volition or a recommendation she probably wouldn’t take the voucher is something she could excuse as not wanting to waste . Also it is London counselling you know that session cost £££ . It honestly also just feels like quite a British thing to do indirect non insistent help is how half my family operates. My comment looks a little Randy I promise it’s not serious and we are 👍 looking forward to the rest of the series truly great telly.

    That phrase -
    "Youre not being naughty"
    "Cause... It doesnt matter"
Is a great way to show even a deeper level of sadness and despair. You stopped making someone else miserable, you stopped self-loathing, you stopped having random sex that much (The fact that she said no to Hes so Good Looking guy is a tremendous character growth) - all of that helped her not facing the guilt that she has. And now she is doing a bit better, tried to move on? But that phrase - It doesnt matter - is showing that nothing will help her escape her sins, nothing will help to smooth her mind (like fucking in the first season) - she just get to live with this guilt and grief now - and there is no point in trying to prove that to others, it wont make you better

I'm late to the party for this but I love that episode and your reaction!
I like the father a lot in this episode actually! He tries to connect with Fleabag andgiving her that voucher for therapy is actually amazing, I've been to therapy a lot and him giving her that is nothing less than a sign of love. He sees that she is struggling but he also knows that he doesn't have the skills to help her. I mean he can barely say a straight sentence lol
Also amazing is his reaction to Fleabag saying that she had a miscarriage. While the stepmom is trying to get the gossip his immediat reaction is standing up and saying "You should go to the Hospital.", he even kinda cuts off the stepmom when she asks if Fleabag knows who the father is ("No, maybe leave that for later.") and when everybody is just asking more questions without doing anything he just says "Hospital, now". He is by far the most concerned at the table and sure he isn't screaming or whatever but we already know that he is (just like Claire) bad at socializing.
It's easy to see him as a weak person, who doesn't stand up for his daughters, but he's amazing and very loving, even though it's difficult for him.

  • @Zut0502
    @Zut0502 2 года назад +2

I don't know if I commented on the last two episodes. Maybe not.
For me, season 1 ends with a feeling of unease. It's only halftime and even though the help comes from sometimes unexpected people (the banker - I really love this strange relationship), the fact is that her father is unable to express himself and her mother-in-law is a real bitch. The fact that her father is unable to say finish her sentences is a very visual way of showing how difficult parents can be to be understood by their children (and vice versa). Yet I love all these people, because they are perfectly imperfect in their humanities and their feelings, which makes them endearing, even the worst, because they are not defined solely by their qualities or their faults. They are complex, without exception. That's why Claire chooses to "believe" her husband (because that calls too many things into question, because it's easier to run away from happiness than to give in to it, because she does not want to abandon her family etc…).
And so, season 2 (because I'm supposed to comment on that lol).
Clearly season 1 is very good. Season two is also but I'm not sure what to say it's "better". Let's say it's different (more mainstream in a way), tackling other things while continuing what's been left hanging. That it completes the cycle in a very particular but almost fantastic way (you will see)
“This is a love story”, she says with a bloody face and that it reminds me so much the spirit of KE! It's so "same" and at the same time very different but we understand better thanks to this season how PWB thinks and what it wanted to do with KE (the tone of the show, the plots, the relationships between the characters etc... and I'm not even talking about the ending!) But it's also a love story in the broad sense, not just romantic. It is the love between friends, sisters, parents. This will be the theme of this second season.
The first episode starts very strong and quickly gets us back into the swing of things with its quirky but always appropriate touch of humor (I love the fake death of the father xD), the relationship between sister (and yes you guessed it for the “pregnant” thing) and this new character who slowly fits into fleabag's life (and again, a nod to KE, "the hot priest" versus the "hot" Villanelle in red or white in a church, all this history of religion, of sin…) and that she has just met. I love Andrew Scott by the way. Fleabag's on-camera commentary is still great. I really laughed a lot in this episode. We quickly understand that all the main character's old relationships will once again be explored, whether with her father (who is simply a "nice" and very clumsy man), her mother-in-law (I love the actress but the character makes me sick), her brother-in-law (no comment) and of course her sister. The miscarriage scene is treated in a surprising way, but in a good way. I know several friends who have experienced this and who have reacted somewhat the same way. This strange way of seeming to accept but not wanting to confront, not wanting to talk about it, as if it didn't matter when clearly it did. It puts a lot of things into perspective. It shows fleabag's devotion to Claire, Claire's fears in general. Very interesting.
Can't wait for you to watch the next one.

I have certain feelings towards theie family. Of course Claire and Fleebag will inevitably talk about the kiss. And when the time comes remember that neither the father nor sister checked in on her in over a year. Her birthday and christmas was not a reason for them to talk, and then he shows up to gift her a counseling session all so that he doesn't have to put in any work himself?! He is troubled and spineless, but he is also a shitty father. I mean, Fleebag WAS about to try and kill herself.
