    I always thought he was drinking in that scene because he was having a crisis of faith over Fleabag. They are developing feelings for each other and she is getting in the way of his 'peace'ful life as a priest and a man of faith. We know alcoholism runs in his family and it's also very common among priests as well. He most likely didn't have a loving upbringing or family life (alcoholic parents and a pedophile brother) so the church was his solace and his salvation. And now Fleabag is making him question that and tempting him to betray what saved him. I completely agree the 'Kneel' scene is more sad than sexy or anything else.

    This is probably my joint favourite Fleabag episode, I was really excited to see you react to it!
    When she’s running away from “us” before the flashback, it’s one of those moments that makes me think about who “us” is..
    Are we Boo? Are we her mother? It shows to me how this relationship with her inner self sometimes becomes too close and too painful, but by sitting so completely in her head she doesn’t have a choice but to be dragged down.
    Aaahh I love this show!!

    I find it so poetic that the priest can look at us, it shows how he gets into Fleabag's mind, it's like you say, he sees her, he seems to be the only one who really listens and understands her. And it's logical that she freaks out and wants to escape from it, she is not used to that kind of intimacy and emotional connection. It's similar when she runs away from us, like in the first season she didn't want us to know what really happened with Boo.
    And yes, I think it's clear that he's just as screwed up as she is haha at one point I felt a bit uncomfortable about how he reacted like that when she was in such a vulnerable moment, it wasn't right of him but I also understand that he is confused by what she makes him feel, it's a sticky situation.

      Ya they were definitely not at their best. This is how I feel about that scene. (Taken from another comment thread below) A big part of me was really kind of turned off by that to be completely honest. Fleabag uses sex to avoid being real. And she FINALLY opens up and spills her heart out to him and he immediately takes advantage and makes it about sex. I don't know... I see the sexy parts for sure, but the whole thing mostly made me feel really bad for both of them.
      For me it felt like they were both acting out of a lot of pain. He seemed to be REALLY struggling with something when she showed up. The pain he was feeling was evident. I think he was trying to help his own pain by being of service to her with the confession thing, as being of service is taught in religions as the exact thing you are supposed to do when you're struggling. I think he thought he was helping and doing what he should but he wasn't in the right mental state to hold space for someone else. And then when Fleabag finally opens up and he hears honest PAIN reflected back at him, he loses the plot and reaches back to her in the way that she's been reaching for him up until that point. It didn't feel like a "men are cheap and superficial" thing to me, it just felt really painful. From both sides. Two people, in a lot of pain, reaching for connection in all the wrong ways at the wrong times and hurting each other in the process.

      @@KelseasComments Exactly, I think you could not say it better, I have seen many people angry with the priest for this, and I do not deny that he was wrong, but he clearly cares for Fleabag, he tries to help her in his own way but unfortunately he is as broken as she is to do it correctly.

      @@KelseasComments Pick any comedy that includes sex and you might’ve noticed how many wrong signals continue to circulate. Men are portrayed as hyper-sex-focused, tripping over their own impulses and hormonal bodies in the bawdy pursuit of the women they want to sleep with.
      We all know these stereotypes about what sex means to men, but how much of it is real? What does sex really mean for men and what role does love play in that? I feel that PWB greatest weakness as a writer is from a male perspective that sex is a achievement like scoring a goal in soccer or climbing a mountain top but honestly that is lazy writing as this male character already knows his place in society and his role is to help Fleabag not be a sex therapist.

      @@sebastiananthony5442 my opinion isn't fully formed yet because I need to see how things play out to really get a feel of the priest's intentions, as well as Phoebe's.. but I didn't really take it that way so far, to be fair! I think she was running away from us because he asked "what are you hiding there underneath", and she had to remember all of her pain, she got overwhelmed and not ready for it.
    Also, the comment that she is gorgeous in mourning is very sad, didn't pick up on that on the 1st watch. Like she embodies the pain

    • @KelseasComments
      @KelseasComments  2 года назад +8

      Ya I agree!
      And the more I thought about the looking good thing, I think it also plays into that belief she seems to have about herself that she's always somehow wrong. She always feels the wrong thing and says the wrong thing and behaves the wrong way. Even when she looks beautiful, it's the wrong time to look beautiful. Even when she's center of attention, it's always for something that's bad or "wrong" about her, again, even when she looks great. She's always somehow offending the social balance that everyone else seems to so easily walk.
