  • Recently we installed an oil pressure gauge in our Legacy GT, and I had a few of you message and bring up topics on oil pressure you didn't quite understand and wanted more information on, so I wanted to put together a video to answer any questions you may have about how your oil system works and what factors can affect it.
    after watching this you should know all the basics of oil pressure, what is too low or too high, how it affects your engine, and other factors that play a parts in oil selection/ oil pressure readings.
    Hopefully you found this video helpful, I will continue to make more content like this in the future going over other questions brought up throughout the channel or Discord.

    I'm very interested in oil pressure. I always put a gauge on my modded cars. My 98 TJ Jeep with 200,000 miles makes like 8 psi at idle but it's been like that for years.
    My sandwich plate style (planning to move it) AEM gauge on my "stage 3" EJ205 in my 05 WRX was reading 10-11 psi at idle with 5w-30. It's also been making a rattle at part throttle between 2500 and 3500 rpms lately after some flogging on the dyno. So I cut open my oil filter, found copper shavings, put Rotella T6 in it, and buttoned it back up.
    For comparison. now I'm getting 12-13 psi at idle, 50 psi cruising at 65 in 5th on the highway, and 95 psi at cold startup. I never lug the engine but she's obviously had too many high mileage beatings. I have a JDM EJ205 on the way. I've still been driving it but plan to swap it before it grinds itself apart. What pressures are you seeing for comparison?

    I used my oil pressure gauge to determine that i should stop using a 30weight oil. And as the oil wears it loses viscosity and you can see that in the gauge. I use the oil temp gauge to tell me when I can start having fun and stop having fun. Start having fun around 180 and call it quits around 250. 14-15psi at raised idle with 200 degree oil temp...5w40 oil...73k miles so far so good. Forged internals

    Awesome content Mat. Your videos/channel is getting better and better.. I will finally be firing up my 2.0L ej20x motor next week after 4 months of work, but I'm waiting for a direct read oil pressure gauge that should arrive soon. What should be the oil pressure values I should look for at startup to know things are going ok with the swap I did? btw.. I never took the engine apart, just did a leak down test on it (it passed) and then I installed the long block on my '05 OBXT. nevermind bro. you mentioned it at 5:10.. lol

    I used a bypass filter in my Ram ecodiesel and went 175,000 miles no issues I like bypass filters that clean at 1 micron. I have a 2022 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi 4X4 3:21 rear diff. Stock OEM oil filter cold idle 47psi hot idle 35psi Cruzing speed 70MPH hot 45psi 6,000 RPM's 57psi, K&P Engineering S17 model full flow 30 micron mesh filter same numbers as stock OEM filter. My current combination filter I just installed is a Trasko full flow/bypass filter Model RK-20s designed with a 10-micron mesh filter for full flow valve rated for 3 gallons per minute and 1 micron rated for 1 gallon per minute in bypass media within the same housing with this filter at cold idle I'm at 40 Psi hot idle 29psi cruising speed 70MPH 35psi at 70MPH full pedal 6,000 rpm I'm at 37psi very little change I called the MFG he said this is good now the valve is regulating the oil pressure properly. I spoke to Blackstone they said 20-70psi is the safe zone. Matt, you know a lot about oil pressure just wanted your opinion on steady oil pressure from 1500 RPM's to 6,000 RPM's with only 2 psi difference in oil pressure do you see this as a positive or should I be concerned and do more research FYI I'm getting an oil analysis as well. I would greatly appreciate your opinion thank you in advance.

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад

      With the way you've described your setup, I don't think you have anything to worry about. There are a lot more oil galleys and things on that hemi than a 4 cylinder, and the regulators put in place likely keep it at a more steady rate for proper bearing load. You've done some really good research into it on your own as well 👌

    • @johnflood4910
      @johnflood4910 Год назад

      @@MatlasDI Thank you, This morning I changed back to K&P S17 full flow same as stock I will be switching back to Trasko being I get better flow I should be able to lower the oil temp like you said more pressure higher heat lower pressure more flow lower heat thanks for your responce.

    How if oil pressure stay in let say 70 psi in all rpm range...?

  • @lgt304
    @lgt304 Год назад

    What are your thoughts on running the oil cooler at the 1st start ups vs not till later on after break in to prevent bearing / break in particles to stay in oil cooler and possible coming out when raising boost and load into motor ? I have a brand new oil cooler for my new build . Just thought about that for some reason .

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад

      I wouldn't worry about it, as the more intricate part of the oil cooler is post filtration. Oil filter would catch any particles that could be an issue during break in. Just make sure to change the oil and filter after initial break in and you should be fine. 👌

    Opinion on using the rear oil galley plug for oil pressure sensor? I used this one as I kept the standard subaru pressure switch and just wondering if it would read any different from this location?

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад +1

      Further away from the pump so it may not be quite as accurate (haven't tested side by side to know for sure) but from what I've seen it works fine, we normally use it for oil temp, but a lot of companies instruct you to use that one anyways, so I don't think there is technically any issue with it.

    No PRESSURE to respond but, is this relevant to just Petrol/Ethanol engines or do all the principles apply to Diesel as well?
    Great info as always!

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад +1

      Haha I see what you did there 😉 Diesel engines will have very similar values, I believe iirc that they run looser tolerances, which is why they call for thicker oil, etc. But on average diesels run somewhere between 30-70 from what I've seen.
