  • Can ketogenic therapy help college students living with depression? Jeff Volek, PhD, RD, is investigating this question in a pilot study at The Ohio State University, where he is a professor in the Department of Human Sciences. Dr. Volek has been a world-renowned expert in ketogenic diets for more than two decades. He has pioneered critical work raising awareness of how the keto diet can reverse diabetes and metabolic syndrome and enhance athletic performance and recovery.
In this interview with Dr. Bret Scher, Dr. Volek discusses his new work exploring ketogenic therapy for depression, including some of the challenges, especially for a college-age population, as well as the immense benefits. The study results so far are extremely promising, with students who maintain ketosis reporting a dramatic improvement in symptoms. Other topics they cover include how metabolic dysfunction underlies most chronic diseases, what a well-formulated keto diet looks like, and the importance of bringing ketogenic therapy into academic programs in dietetics and medicine. Dr. Volek shares that he is unaware of any academic programs that instruct on keto nutrition as a powerful medical intervention-this is a critical step to make metabolic therapies more mainstream.

Two of my biggest heros. (both geniuses I believe and both modest men).
I think Jeff Volek was a speaker on those fab cruises back in the day.
    Thanks to you both gentlemen

I'm 75. Three-years ago I was about to lose my driver's license due to brain fog. Twenty-six-months ago, I switched to the carnivore way of eating. I am now happy to say that the brain fog (and numerous other metabolic ailments) are things of the past. I now drive with confidence and with quick reflexes. Zero carbs, zero plants, is what gave me an incredible improvement in my health, both mental and physical.

Love both of these men. Started my low carb keto journey reading Volek's work. What and when you eat matters for overall health. Drop the carbs and don't fear healthy fat - eat animal proteins - win win win

    Hello @Metabolic Mind,
I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on exogenous ketones such as DeltaG, KetoneAid, HVMN, etc. Do you believe they play a role in increasing ketone levels while following a ketogenic diet and potentially in the treatment of mental illness?
I often struggle to maintain a ratio of 2:1 for fat to protein and typically find myself closer to a 1:1 ratio. As a result, I have difficulty achieving therapeutic levels of ketosis even when limiting my carb intake to under 20 grams.
Additionally, I am curious about your perspective on the use of Keto in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Aspergers.
Thank you for your insights on these topics.

Thank you for affirming that a ketogenic diet can be not only sustainable but also enjoyable. I've been in ketosis for 6.5 years and I love it! Never felt better. Haven't been to a doctor in years. Rarely get sick. I mountain bike, hike, rock climb, do yoga, and workout regularly. I work in permaculture and landscaping, so I'm constantly taxing my body. And I feel amazing. I always have more energy than my colleagues. While the transition can be difficult, once settled in to a *well-formulated* (that's vitally important) keto diet, it is rather easy to sustain and highly enjoyable.

Dr. Volek, thank you for your many years of work. You said, "What I was taught wasn't the full story." REWRITE: "What I was taught was absolutely the wrong story." Please don't sugar-coat the language. We need to get the truth out loud, proud, and with conviction!

@@samwiseg7380 the effects on depr ession I'm not sure because I wasn't trying to solve that problem and it was probably 5+ years ago, it was a welcome unexpected side effect of just changing the diet, I didn't change anything else in my life.
Most nutritionist/MDs don't know anything about nutrition, they are not trustworthy or knowledgeable.

Aha! My elevated fasting blood sugar WHILE IN KETOSIS may be related to low sodium RAISING MY CORTISOL on top of my daily coffees.
23:55 "because the problem is you DON'T HAVE ADEQUATE SODIUM, it's a stress response in the body, especially on the adrenal gland. CORTISOL GOES UP, aldosterone goes up, all in an attempt to hang on to that sodium and fluid."
I'm going to start abiding by Dr DiNicolantonio PhD salt replacement strategy: "one cup of coffee would be 1/8 of a teaspoon, two cups would be a fourth, and then four cups would be a half of a teaspoon" ruclips.net/video/AUqNF8YCxHE/видео.htmlsi=S4b5XY0Kk-7v-PUe

Things balanced out nicely after several months ... 👌

I have an trauma from when my parents die when I was very young.. when I was on the ketovore diet I felt like I was finally in control of my fears and emotions. Maybe it has something to do with blocking nlrp3 . When the body has a lot less inflamation it does have impact on the brain and also on trauma. ( my opinion) body and mind are always connected I guess . Greets
