  • Metabolic dysfunction, such as insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, is closely associated with symptoms of depression. But how do we know if metabolic dysfunction causes depression? Or if metabolic therapies could treat depression? Those are more difficult questions to answer, but there is accumulating biological evidence that links insulin resistance and depressive disorders.
    Dr. Natalie Rasgon, a psychiatrist and clinician-researcher at Stanford University, published an important paper suggesting a possible causative role. Her research showed that measures of insulin resistance predicted the incidence of major depressive disorder. We discuss the background and findings of the study, as well as the take-home message-screening for and treating metabolic dysfunction can improve symptoms of depression.

    I went on a low-carb diet to lose excess body fat. And, as a side effect, I also lost decades of crippling depression. It's the best side effect I've ever experienced in my life.

    Dr Scher, I have kept my depression at bay with running and low carb diets for 20+ years. I was a disaster in university, where it was carbs all day long. The schools now cajole and coerce parents into buying "care baskets" for their students, and it's all processed carbs. No wonder our young people are hurting so much.

      Thank you for sharing your journey. You are right, what we have come to accept as "normal" or even "caring" can be counterproductive to our health. We need voices like yours to help push back against that trend.

    Thank you so much for this video. Being a layman I didn’t understand everything. I’ll need to watch this again. I really appreciate hearing about this study and having an explain to us. I’ve had mental health issues all my life. I’m just recently learning that much of it could’ve been changed years ago. The studies are so helpful and your channel is a real blessing you. Love from Vermont

    Excellent interview. I wish the doctors would catch up! And general population! I am on keto and intermittent fasting since may 2023. I put my husband and four children (including 10 year old keto-resistant 😅😂) on Keto (not all the time but 3 days or more) abd wow, the level of ability to handle stress and the reduction in anxiety is amazing. I cannot say that loud enough. I believe all mental and physical illness begins in the gut!!! ❤❤

    Thank you, Metabolic Mind, for your bold, yet balanced, proclamation of the truth. Just to relate a quick personal story: I recently took my Mom to a very kind, brilliant neurologist. My Mom has significant stenosis of her left, carotid artery, and I am concerned (obviously) about the potential for stroke. The doctor was terrific, but I was stunned, frankly, when he admitted to not knowing what a CAC score is! He also seemed almost flippant when I voiced my concern regarding how insulin resistance might be impacting her carotid artery disease. I stayed humble and thanked him for his expertise, but I find myself a bit baffled! How is it that brilliant people do not know this stuff? Is it a lack of interest in the literature? Or, are they, perhaps, fearful of not operating within the current standard of care framework? It just puzzles me, and sort of saddens me, too.

      It's the "silos" of care in the current medical system. This neurologist immerses himself in cultivating expertise in neurology, rather than taking a more holistic approach. Unfortunately it can mean missing the forest for the trees.

    I am 78 years old. I have had dysthymia since childhood. My grandfather was paranoid and my schizophrenic brother recently committed suicide. I have been eating keto + IF for 4 years, carnivorous for a few months = no improvement in mood and fatigue. When the mental problem is anchored in the family over 2 generations or more ..... hum not easy to get out of it without certainly the support of a multidisciplinary team. Google translate french. (one of my grandsons 30 years old is hospitalized with schizophrenia)

      There may also be underlying nutritional deficiencies, as I have found, as well as a serious wheat/gluten genetic sensitivity as well as MSG and a link to neurological issues.

      One of my twin sons died by suicide when he was 24; 10 days after I took him to the hospital with suicidal ideation. They said he had anxiety and released him without further testing or treatment. His brother was in the hospital for a month a couple of years ago. The hospital did no blood work testing, just observed and prescribed medication for schizophrenia. The next week, he was diagnosed with severe B12 and D deficiency, to start with.

      Oh Anita! I am so sorry for all you have been through. Mental illness has been in my family for generations as well. Please stick with it and consider working with one of the metabolic nutritionists that are found on the metabolic Mind website. I am 4 months in to a ketogenic diet + IF. It has helped tremendously but have had to work with macros. It has taken time and assistance to work things out and be able to keep my ketones at an optimal level for metabolic and brain health. I wasn’t overweight but horribly insulin resistant. It has taken my body months to start to heal but it is healing and my brain/moods are so much better. I look forward to what I will feel like in another 2 months and at a year.
      Hoping you feel better soon and that one of the brilliant practitioners that are recommended on the website can help. Lifting you up today and your sweet nephew.

    The can of worms not touched by this dialogue is that the antipsychotics commonly prescribed for severe mood disorders tend to make insulin resistance WORSE. Nevermind the "freshman fifty," here comes the "olanzapine one hundred."

    Hi, I’m new to keto and tracking macros and I was just wondering how do I find the macros in food if the nutritional label isn’t trustworthy . For example we have two bags of frozen broccoli with the same serving size and grams but one says 1 net carb a serving and the other says 2. Where can I find accurate information? Thank you

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  Год назад +1

      Hi Megan. You are likely to find small discrepancies like this wherever you look. But the "good news" is that they are small and unlikely to significantly affect the ultimate outcomes. That being said, if you are looking for a site that tends to be accurate, the USDA is a good place to start fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/1103170/nutrients

    I suggest that those who hesitate to embrace these connections bristle at the word "lifestyle" as "the object of needed change". Americans in particular cling to their "lifestyle" as their "right", and thus resist anyone who suggests they "give up" that "right". "Empowerment" wording might shift this hesitance. Look at the "empowerment" language model of the Paleo/Crossfit community, for instance. [I am not judging any "lifestyle" as "good" or "bad"]

    You can have perfect metabolic health and get psychosis or depression. I do think if your metabolic health is poor it can lead to things like yo yo dieting, low gaba, etc which leads to mental disfunction. It's hard enough getting sane people to rectify metabolic issues, good luck getting not so sane people on medication that probably cause metabolic disfunction, to rectify this

      That is why it would be so much more helpful to be diagnosed and have corrected, as children, or early in the health issues, so their illness doesn't become them.

      Stress and trauma can cause mental health problems while messing with hunger hormones, fat gain, etc. Toxins also can cause serious psychiatric disorders. But even if diet isn't the cause, it's probably often a key contributing factor. One can deal with other problems to a greater degree if one follows a diet that gives a lot of nutrition, metabolic health, low inflammation, etc. It's usually not only one factor but the cumulative effects, some of them epigenetically cumulative over multiple generations.

    • @brucejensen3081
      @brucejensen3081 Год назад +1

      @@MarmaladeINFP yeah. You can have perfect diet, but if there is some form of chronic stress, it will get to you. Combined factors make things worse. I think trauma leads to poorer choices, and lots before the trauma got to them their choices weren't that poor
