  • During a bathtub update project I needed to remove an old white drain and overflow cover and replaced with a more updated brushed nickel version I purchased from Amazon. This project is approachable with little DIY experience and as long as your take your time and follow along you will have no issues.

Scott, This is NOT a criticism, but merely a suggestion. At 4:58 as you are removing the overflow plate, I strongly encourage you to have a rag or piece of cloth stuffed into the drain. It's pretty easy and likely that one of the screws you are removing could drop unexpectedly and end up in the drain. Then, you'd have a new set of problems to deal with. Food for thought.... Thanks for all your GREAT videos.

Question: my drain is all barnacled up from corrosion, harsh tub cleaners, etc.
I have a PVC pipe drain pipe under the plastic tub so is there a threaded PVC adapter that I would be unscrewing the metal drain from?
Hopefully this corroded metal drain will thread back out?

Trying to install this drain on an older Kohler tub. The inside of the drain flange the holds the tub against the drain pipe is not threaded, but is the size of the larger bushing on the new twist drain. I cannot find a tap large enough to first thread the old Kohler flange. Is it possible to use the twist drain with the larger brass bushing to act as a tap to thread the twist drain in?

But how do you clean it? I have the old style drain like the one you replaced. Once every 6 - 8 weeks or so, I have to remove it to pull out the clog (hair & soap) and after doing this a few hundred times, some of the plastic components have broken. I have tried to find a replacement, but can't find one that is the same configuration. So, if I replace it with the pull & turn style like you have, that means I have to disconnect everything each time? And I didn't know about plumber's putty or the drain pull tool.

Thank you for the step by step instructions. Great video! However, yesterday, I had a big problem when I was replacing my bathtub drain. By the way, I live in the UK in a brand new flat. I removed the bathtub and once I tried to install a new one I realised that the main pipe connector under the bathtub was not there anymore to connect it (screw-in). This was due to the main pipe not being fixed and rather was left flexible moving around the floor. And the worst thing is that I cannot access under the bathtub as the side panel of the bathtub cannot be removed easily as it is fully fixed on the wall with tiles on it. If you have a solution for the situation please do let me know. Thank you.

I think it's for two reasons. 1, if the tub surface isn't perfectly smooth and flat, it may not seal correctly. 2, if it does leak there, it won't leak DOWN the drain, it will leak AROUND the drain. In other words, between the tub and the floor. The putty will guarantee a good seal and also seal between the drain and tub opening.

  • @user-sg8kw6hd4j

Those drain covers are so difficult when you have a hair clog. You have to take apart the entire drain mechanism so you can get a snake or a hair grabber tool down the hole. I've seen them broken on rental units because people couldn't get the water to go down & they couldn't get the stopper up or off to get in the drain hole to try to clear the clog. When it's broken, the stopper will no longer stay down to keep the water in the tub. They are awful when you have a clog, and if you have anyone with hair, living in your household, do not get this kind of tub stopper. They may look nice, but they will be a pain to work with when you have a clog. 🙃

Usually they thread into the strainer. Just turn it until it begins to drop down to close(as if to plug the tub), once halfway or more closed you should be able to turn it counterclockwise and unthread it. Sometimes you have to unscrew the part that you grab(handle?) From the rest of the top and it will reveal the top of the piece of brass that threads into the strainer. Grab the brass using channel locks and turn counterclockwise.

Depending on the clog, you might have luck with this amzn.to/39EBZsS. The clog dissolver can sometimes break up the clog enough where you can flush it with plenty of hot water after letting the dissolver sit for the recommended amount of time. If that doesn't work you might need to call in a pro.

Those pop up drains are a no go for me due to the fact that you have to touch something that comes in contact with dirty water, piss, pubic hair, grease, dirt, bacteria viruses, spit, snot, blood, jizz, you name it, vs. the toggle lever that isn't exposed to that nasty stuff as much.

the ability to drain or fill the tub without having to bend down low is gone atfter this "modern" change. People with sore backs or disabilities will thank the persons who decided for this if they are stupid.. Noticed that you did not cover the drain hole before you removed the screws above it. Viewers will drop many a screw down the drain if they do the same. That practice has put many a project on hole while a replacement screw or other part needed to be found or purchased.

As someone who has both the issues you describe, I don't find these types of drains to be an issue; you just sit down on the side wall of the tub and your arm easily reaches the drain without any real strain or issue.

Heres an observation that plays into a trending topic with generalization and should be considered as scientific fact!....
No gloves, a wristwatch, little concern (I'm probably exaggerating) towards scratching or damaging the tub with his tools, all lead me to the conclusion... that this guy is generation X!
Because we just dont give a fuu.... you know what? We do ... we give a little bit of a faak, but thats it!
And how much easier is it to turn your wrist a little to see what time it is than to reach into your pocket of your corduroy pants or tight jeans unlock your phone with the convenience of biometrics which may not even be in your pocket?....
    GEN X RULES!
    Oh yeah.... thanks. Helpful!
And another thing... hes probably NOT gen x. Generation Y probably. Oh, you dont hear much about them but they are highly influenced by GEN X! Which is why they are opressed BY THE GOVERNMENT!
    I like to have fun...

This drain with the screw is the stupidest invention. My screw is stripped and stuck...cannot remove it unless it's cut.

Very disappointed. You didn't replace your bath tub trip lever. Your new drain stopper is going to be much more trouble in the future.
