      Are Tesla drivers giving non-Tesla drivers grief and pointing to the "Tesla Vehicle Charging Only" signs evident in the video? I would guess that some of them view non-Tesla users of the Tesla superchargers only slightly less negatively than they view people ICE'ing the parking spot since, for the Tesla driver, the result is the almost the same. I say almost since other EV drivers paying money to Tesla helps keep Tesla in business.

    Great video! I was charging my wife's Bolt EV to test the Superchargers in a place where there are 28 Superchargers. Only 4 Tesla's were there charging so I found a spot on the edge since I knew I would be taking up 2 spots. The charging went great, but unfortunately a Tesla owner that was charging 10 spots down gave my family the finger. Sad there are people like that.

      Uhhh, as a Tesla owner in Europe I'm sorry you had that first experience. Not polite of them at all.
      We have many Tesla Supercharger sites open to all EVs here in Europe and I've never seen any such behavior. Those of us who used to own non-Tesla EVs also appreciate what a hugely important step this is for sustainable energy/transport for all, including older/slower charging cars.
      The correct behavior for Tesla owners should be to smile, wave or even come over and have a chat, ask if it's your first time, welcome you to the network and see if you need any help with the charger/app! We must do better.
      Thank you for charging at a Tesla SuC and may you have many more successful charges and happier encounters!

    Keep in mind that, so far, not all of the V3's are enabled for NACS adapter non-Tesla charging. The Tesla app accurately shows you what you can use for your particular non-Tesla. A good example is I-80 from Cheyenne WY to Salt Lake City. I re-examined the Denver to Portland trip my daughter and I took in May in her Bolt. None of the V3's in Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs or Evanston are enabled yet, so we would still be using EA. Maybe in the near future all Superchargers will be enabled. The skeleton Supercharger staff has probably had its plate full recently.

    • @Geckogold
      @Geckogold 4 месяца назад

      Slight correction to your statement, there are 3 different version of Superchargers, V1, V2, and V3. The V1 was their OG superchargers that were installed early on when Tesla first started to mass produce the Model S, which caps out at around 120 kW. The V2's came out a little later, and are marked as "150 kW" speeds. V3's are marked as "250 kW" charging speeds, and those are the ones you want to look for.
      All of the Supercharger sites you mentioned are actually either V1 or V2, so they will never be available to non-Teslas. Not necessarily to keep them exclusive to Tesla, but because V1/V2 used a different communication protocol than CCS1 does (V3 uses the same ones which is why they work), and retrofitting them to work with non-Teslas was likely determined to be not cost effective considering they're legacy sites that are no longer being built out, and you'd have to essentially tear out all the wiring and connections to get it to work. Cheaper just to build new V3/V4 sites instead.
      There are also some Supercharger sites that have a mix of V1/V2 and V3, such as Limon, CO and Winnemucca, WY. Those are not listed as available to NACS on Tesla's website/app, likely to avoid confusion where a non-Tesla tries to use the V2 stall and finds out they can't charge.
      Don't worry too much though. V1 and V2 are terrible, since they charge slower, but have shared stalls, so if you're on 1A, and someone pulls in and starts charging on 1B, it splits the power between those two cars, halving the charging speeds. V3 technically still does that, but the cabinets are rated for 1 MW, and splits the power between 4 stalls hence the "everyone can get 250 kW speeds" at a V3 that Tesla owners talk about.
      This is also why you will usually see V3 stalls in multiples of 4, such as a site having 8 stalls or 24 stalls. There are some exceptions, like in Twinsburg, OH where the V3 is only 7 stalls. But in that specific situation, that's the amount of parking spaces that were available for that location.

    • @HenryLoenwind
      @HenryLoenwind 4 месяца назад

      @@Geckogold Just one tiny correction: V3s also use CAN with Teslas, but they have the hardware to also speak Powerline for CCS communication. V1 and V2 are missing that extra hardware, just like the old Tesla cars that either cannot or need an upgrade to use the CCS adapter to charge at CCS stations.
      Little side story: A couple years back, Tesla turned on the CCS functionality (presumably for testing it)...and all non-Tesla CCS cars suddenly could change there for free. At least where the plug physically fit, i.e. in Europe.

    For now, non-Teslas should park next to each other to their right so that another non-Tesla can take the spot that a Tesla can't, so only one or two spots are lost in all for the whole site.

    Glad to see GM owners finally getting access to superchargers. Also glad Nikki commented on charger etiquette and consideration for other supercharger users. However, I would not expect owners to return to their car in 30 minutes. IMO it is perfectly acceptable to take a 1 hour lunch or dinner break while your car charges. This is the best way to plan long EV road trips, as you are going to be sitting in your car all day and should get out of the car when charging to have a better road trip experience.

    • @HenryLoenwind
      @HenryLoenwind 4 месяца назад

      A 3rd-party conversion kit would be quite problematic. If you only ever want to either AC charge or DC charge, it's easy. But to be able to switch between the two, the electronics that communicate with the charger need to switch the high-voltage lines from connecting to the battery to connecting to the onboard charger. That's not something a simple adapter can do, so you'd need to replace the charging electronics of the car and add a couple of high-voltage switchover relays.
      This also is the reason it takes ages for the manufacturers to switch over to built-in NACS ports.

    Thanks for the info - I was rockin' the whole idea until you got to 9:55, where you explain that I'll need to block two spaces to charge my Bolt, because the Tesla cord is too short.
    I tried your idea (at the same bank of chargers in the Target parking lot) of parking at the rightmost space, but that space was for a J1772 charger, and - importantly - had a bumper that prevented me parking close enough to use the very short Tesla cord. So it's hog two adjacent spaces to charge a Bolt. Seems like a good way to get nasty notes from Tesla owners, so I'm storing the adapter, to be used only in emergencies and when I'm by the car all the time I'm charging.

Gives more options for people which is good, remembering the Tesla network for the US is more reliable than the EA network so I'd rather go somewhere with reliability even if you pay abit more but can always get a membership to get a lower fee. Something to be aware of is this adapter only works with V3 and above Superchargers, so those are the only ones that will show up on that map of available Tesla chargers for the Chevy EV's. Also if there is a Tesla Supercharger station that has both V2 & V3 I think its treated like a V2 station and that will not appear on the map either. For example in my area there are 10 or 12 Supercharger stations that show up on my Tesla map BUT when I look at the map in my Equinox EV it only shows 3 Supercharger stations because those 3 are exclusively V3.

    10:39 This is a bit of a misunderstanding about how the Superchargers work. Because the V3 Superchargers only have 90 kW of total power per stall, a Bolt EV charging at 50 kW or even less has no impact on the charging speeds of the other EVs, and it would have no impact on how long the line is to access an open stall when the site is completely full. At that point, the "charge as long as you need but not longer" rule of etiquette applies. The bigger issue for Bolt EV drivers is that they shouldn't be wasting their own time so there's almost never a reason to occupy a stall for longer than 35 to 40 minutes.

    Surprised you give Elon any money whatsoever - even if it’s just a few dollars for charging.

      We demonstrated because people asked us to - as I noted, I’ll personally not use it much - Nikki

    Good charging etiquette would be to not use a chevy bolt at a quick charger and waste space charging at abysmal speeds. The bolt is the slowest quick charging vehicle i have ever had and people need to stop attempting quick charging.

      Wow. So kind. Attitudes like this spoil the EV experience.

      @@transportevolved I had the pleasure of having a Chevy bolt. You cannot state that it is spoiling the experience when it ruins charging for EVERYONE. ever had to go to a shared charging stall only to find a bolt not charging full rate but leaving the other charge point in an almost useless 30kw rate? Happens ALL the time. Most common culprit? The Chevy bolt. What other car charges as slow as a Chevy bolt on a quick charger? A 10-80% charge shouldn't take 2hrs+ to do. 54kw rate only goes until about 30-35% before it plummets on the new charging curve gm loaded on every vehicle they could get ahold of. Passing that vehicle off as a quick charging ev is an insult to every other ev.

    GM dropped the ball with this Tesla Supercharger access.....I don't think they have a clue what they are doing. I have not tried to charge my Bolt EV yet on a Tesla Supercharger since the closest one to me is 14 miles one way. I might get around to it one day. I have around 51000 miles on my 2017 Premier. I love many things about my Bolt EV but I am not sure I would consider another GM product in the future because when it comes to EV's I think GM is clueless.
