To be fair, Daisy is a different character from Peach, (Daisy is from the Gameboy game "Super Mario Land.") and "Koopa" is actually Bowser's original Japanese name, but it was mistranslated as "King of the Koopa" so NOA mistakenly thought it was his species, and renamed him "Bowser." Regardless of it's faults, and liberties taken, I unironically enjoyed the SMB movie. It even had some clever game references like the Snifits, and Mario confronting King Koopa on a bridge.

The dark tone of the world always gave me a Sega vibe, more Sega in tone them Nintendo. Very strange movie but that is what i love most about it.
To this day, Nintendo swears up and down that Mario and Luigi don’t have a last name. Also, Nintendo struck a deal with Universal Pictures. The next Mario movie will be animated.

Hey Minty your videos are one of my favorite things to watch..I'm 38 and you're hitting the nail on the head with the things I want know about..cheers from Kentucky!
You know a movie is going to fail in the box office if the directors and actors don't get along with each other during its production. But even so, I'm able to enjoy the Super Mario Bros. movie for its acting and special effects despite it having almost nothing to do with one of the best video games in the world.
I don’t care what this guy or anyone else says, this movie was so imaginative and took a really creative direction in making a backstory behind a video that never actually had concrete story to begin with. There might have been a lot of critical hazing and a creative animosity in production but I honestly think it created a perfect storm.
I know what would make a great video game movie and I believe it will be successful in the box office, and that movie is..... The Legend of Zelda! I believe this movie will be as big as Black Panther was! Because anybody who's a video gamer and who has ever played Zelda would know that a live action movie would be a Smash Hit!!! That's just my opinion!!!
The Robot Chicken Legend of Zelda clip is hilarious. That's claymation though. I'm pretty sure I remember watching a Zelda cartoon when I was a kid too.

James007HungerZone yeah, there were 2 princesses in the course of the games. Peach just became the more popular and used one. And I remember Bowser being referred to as both Koopa and bowser in the games and the tv shows.

Not a great movie but watchable for passing a couple hrs when nothing on tv
The actors had to get drunk to get through the movie? Well, so did the audience! (I liked Big Bertha though. She was cool! Also, Yoshi may not look like his game counterpart, but he was adorable.)
I only knew facts 7 and 6. The strangest part is, why on earth anyone thought Super Mario should become a _dark_ movie. There were certainly other video games that would have fit that concept
Hey! Both Mario and Luigi’s last names are “Mario”, which makes them Mario brothers. And the game and movie’s name is “Super Mario Bros”. It all makes sense now!
Just for the record, I love this movie, personally I think it is underappreciated and I'm sorry the actors did not like being in it as I think it was among each actors best performance, as for the sequel that never happened, since "The Mario Bros" is already a video game, why not take the story of this movie in the direction making a video game movie where instead of turning a video game into a movie you do what they did with the "Back to The Future: The Game"(RUclips Walk-Through video here: ruclips.net/video/60S-SbkowMM/видео.html) or "Ghostbusters The Video Game"(RUclips walk-through video here: ruclips.net/video/bkhNDwCa6Us/видео.html) this time giving Mario a video game based off whatever was planned for the sequel, just as there are many different types of Mario Video Games(a lot of which are highlighted here: ruclips.net/channel/UCBeYDD6H2QHdWdypYvi3grg, on "CopyCat's" channel, whom you should do a collaboration with if you do a video about movies based on video games), also "Princess Daisy" is an actual character in the "Mario Brothers Franchise" and was used in this movie because she has often been seen as equivalent to Luigi as Peach is to Mario, and just to add a little trivia Peach is not Mario's first Girlfriend, that honor goes to Pauline the damsel in distress from the arcade game "Donkey Kong"(where Mario is originally called "Jumpman" which is his actual first appearance in a video game), anyway I think you get the idea of what I'm suggesting, granted the other 2 video games I mentioned were not taken in as well by the fans as they were with me(at least for "Back to the Future The Video Game" in my case), though for those of us who like these kind of video games and like this movie, doing something like this may be a good thing for fans of cult movies and video games as this movie is considered a "Cult Movie" and I think is actually better received in other countries especially in Europe as they have "Blu-Ray Versions" of this movie, so just try to look at this as a retrospective movie, in the sense of how sometime what turns out as a bad movie in Hindsight can be seen as better later on in a retrospect view, which is how I tend to look at a lot of underappreciated Movies, also "The Washington Post" at least according to the cover of the VHS version says "It's a Blast" and I agree, especially since if they wanted a movie that was just a video of the video game they may as well have made a full length cartoon movie of "The Super Mario Brothers Super Show"(www.thewatchcartoononline.tv/anime/the-super-mario-bros-super-show) even using the same actors and voice actors as before, where as this movie puts an interesting twist on the movie, though for the record I do agree about the "Bruce Willis" thing, please respond to this I always feel better when I get feedback.
Yes I actually like this movie so, I like to believe it was an alternate universe Style. Also we will take the time to appreciate that this is one of his longer videos on a movie that no one likes! Thank you minty
I blame SMW for a lot of the bad things we got from adaptations. Why did it have to be set on a Dinosaur island? Now we have Dinosaurs in our live action movie and Cave Men in the cartoon. And SML had to mess things up by calling Toadstool "Daisy" then Mario 64 had to farther mess things up by calling her "Peach" and giving the guy from Brooklyn an Italian Accent.
Never understood the shock of people learning their last name was Mario ? They are the Mario brothers. Normally a family is referred by their last name not the oldest first name.
Nobody talking about Toad?"Buck up things could be worse, sings "Ain't got no water, anywhere, foods bad, so's the air can't find anything in this great big stupor,, all because of the evil King Koopa." You can't arrest a guy for singing songs. Cop "For singing Anti-Koopa songswe can, ahh Plumbers." "How. How, How, Sitting here in closed detention with brothers from another dimension. Hey what rhymes with dimension?"
A lot of game franchises don't really work as movies, especially live action ones. This being one of them. Can you imagine a CONTRA movie where you actually fight an alien villain called Red Falcon and the main characters flip through the air as they collect power ups that are dropped down to them from drones they shoot down. XD No, thanks.
My brothers and I had the action figures when we were littles. I remember the Luigi talked . He said " the fungus is among us" but it was really high pitched and mooshed together so it was hard to understand. But still to this day I say " the fungus is amongus!"
I love this movie BECAUSE it is so bizarre. And if we're being completely honest, a straight adaptation of the source material wouldn't have made much more sense than what we got.

I was actually at the theater at 11am to see jurrasic park the first showing of the day it came out at 11 years old, with 3 friends. Ofcourse it was sold out and had to get tickets to the next showing over 2 hours later. So we had no extra money to do anything while waiting to see jurrasic park, and one of us decided to sneak into mario bros, and open up the exit doors to get the rest of us in, so we would have something to do while waiting for the amazing dinosaur movie. It was so terrible, even to my 11 year old self, and ironic that it had terribly rendered dinosaurs. Thank god I got to follow one of the worst movies ever made with one of the greatest movies ever made, all in the span of 5 or 6 hours
I always liked the "Mario Mario and Luigi Mario: line because it actually makes sense. They're called the "Mario Bros" because their last name is Mario. You don't name a set of brothers after one's first name. It's like if there's a pair of brothers named Tim Smith and Charlie Smith, you're not gonna call them the "Tim Bros" or "Charlie Bros". You call them the Smith Bros.
Mario being Mario Mario is not dissimilar to a number of people. Cao Cao was a powerful Chinese monarch of the Three Kingdoms era, and there have been other people with double names. I heard of one poor soul with something like Smith Smith here in the states. It is really no different than a Dan Daniels or Don Donaldson. Strange? Certainly, but not unknown.
I would have loved to see the birth of other MARIO characters, like having that Super Scope 6/Devo Gun, turn Big Bertha into a giant fish or see Scapellie get turned into the future Wario, as Wario was introduced in the 1992 Gameboy game SUPER MARIOLAND 2: THE 6 GOLDEN COINS and the movie opened in 1993.
As a kid, I knew this movie wouldn't work as a representation of the video game franchise (how could one at that time make live action goomba's, for crying' out loud), so every difference they made to the appearance and such made sense to me. As a movie, I enjoyed it, and still do to this day. Super Mario Bros. as a video game franchise is a series that I enjoyed, but never got so gung ho about to the point that everything had to be absolutely precise. I could understand the differences that were made, and never complained. To people who would complain, how could they possibly expect to make a live action film featuring Bowser, the Mushroom Kingdom, and even Yoshi without making it look stupid. They did what they did, and I don't think it was bad as a movie. As a representative of the franchise canon, it doesn't match up. But as it's own standalone movie, it's great. But that's just me.
So this film does have some fun easter eggs. Daisy being from the Gameboy games. Also Mario's girlfriend in this is Pauline, though she is called Daniella Pauline Verducci.
@@ststriker Yep named Daniella is what they call her in the movie but in script and I think in the credits her full name is Daniella Pauline Verducci. She is Mario's girlfriend. This is sort of the source of the Luigi being with Daisy type thing too.
I actually think a Metroid movie would be well-received in this modern-day era considering they keep making films off of Japanese anime and some of them aren't half bad why not 30 or 40 year old video games
Same with Halloween 3, not a terrible movie, but hated on because of the lack of Michael Meyers. I like the movie for what it is, good 80s horror movie with Tom Atkins!
Yeah, me too... all in all, it's kind of enjoyable. And yet, on more thing: what do you expect a movie, based on plotless game where a mustachio guy stomps on mushrooms and turtles, to be spot-on to the game, as many fans had actually expected? That's pure nonsense!
Producer Roland Joffe directed quite a bit of the movie. Funny considering he was known for directing serious Oscar bait films like The Killing Fields and The Mission.
Fun Fact about the game: Mario has a hat because they didn't have the programming at the time to have his hair move when he did, so they just put a hat on him to solve the issue. :)
The train wreck that keeps on giving, the director's and their constant on the fly rewrites that stopped any actor from building the character as they interpreted it. Hoskins is a great actor with good range if he would have been given a solid script I believe he would have played Mario much better than what we got. Sad there was such a chance for something special.
Have you seen the documentary on the European blu-ray? Disney came in a week before shooting with a brand new script. Even though the film was fully story boarded to an entirely different script. I think the directors did the best they could with a week's notice to make a film. Nice going Disney.
I also enjoyed it very much. How the universe established when the metor hit the rock was mind-blowing, for me, as a kid. I feel sad when Leguizamo said that he regretted this movie.
@@delete---7593 ? As a kid I thought that bringing dinosaur convergent evolution and the dimension rift were super cool. Also I didn't like the cartoon, so gritty interpretation of the lore was super cool as well for me. It's fine if you don't like it though.
In their defense... there wasn't really a backstory to the game like there is now. You can do an awesome mario movie now because of how the character has developed over the years.
This has been a big point that's stuck out about it for me as well. Before the movie came out, the entire history of the franchise was just everything from Mario's origin as "Jumpman" in the Donkey Kong arcade game up through Super Mario World (and maybe also Mario Kart?) on SNES. Games like Mario RPG, the Paper Mario series, and the Mario & Luigi series were all years away from happening, so the full extent of all storytelling in the franchise had pretty much only ever been "rescue the princess". The world of the Mushroom Kingdom (which admittedly the sets in the movie don't come anywhere close to capturing the look of) had mostly (aside from SMB3 and SMW's map interfaces) been depicted only in 2D sidescrolling platformer style with very little processing power to spare on background details. It's pretty easy to see how the movie's creators would have seen a lot of it as pretty much being a blank slate. They had a few names and rough concepts to work with, and that was it.
@@Aceinfinity-le8zc yes Especially the fact that it had cartoons and comics by this point. Even the manuals had a backstories. Saying that it didn't have a story to work with is an excuse for lazy writing and directing. Not to mention defending bad adaptations

I heard of one poor soul with something like Smith Smith here in the states. It is really no different than a Dan Daniels or Don Donaldson. Strange? Certainly, but not unknown.
It Lazy but now it all makes sense to me but I think they could've invent a really clever last name.
I actually liked this movie lol. It was just so weird lol.
ozzyman75 anything as a child is GOLD lol
We didnt care.
I liked it as a kid to but I haven’t seen it in years
I would have loved to see the birth of other MARIO characters, like having that Super Scope 6/Devo Gun, turn Big Bertha into a giant fish or see Scapellie get turned into the future Wario, as Wario was introduced in the 1992 Gameboy game SUPER MARIOLAND 2: THE 6 GOLDEN COINS and the movie opened in 1993.
Me too I really like it, honestly still do. This movie is an easy fun watch and not that bad
I liked it I still like it lol
I love that it wasn’t like the game at all, it was a weird movie but I loved seeing this as a kid and still do to this day.
Princess Daisy is from Super Mario Land for the original game boy.
Chris Petty thank you for pointing that out
Yep and so is koopa
@@NuttyRageGaming koopa wasn't in the game boy games.
Yup all true
King koopa is the original name then bowser was added to his name for the N64 .
I don't even remember Pauline being in this movie
@@ststriker Yep named Daniella is what they call her in the movie but in script and I think in the credits her full name is Daniella Pauline Verducci. She is Mario's girlfriend. This is sort of the source of the Luigi being with Daisy type thing too.
@@fatenabu1 I'mma have to watch this movie again next time it's on TV.
The good king is named Bowser. The bad guy is supposed to be Bowser.
@@OldNick999-real1 Yet they call him Koopa in the movie.
I actually think a Metroid movie would be well-received in this modern-day era considering they keep making films off of Japanese anime and some of them aren't half bad why not 30 or 40 year old video games
I like this movie I never understood the hate I just suspended the super Mario thing and treated it like a wacky si-fi movie
facts!
Same with Halloween 3, not a terrible movie, but hated on because of the lack of Michael Meyers. I like the movie for what it is, good 80s horror movie with Tom Atkins!
It had clashing themes. It couldn't decide if it was campy video game homage, or dark post apocalyptic. I liked it but could see why many did not.
Yeah, me too... all in all, it's kind of enjoyable. And yet, on more thing: what do you expect a movie, based on plotless game where a mustachio guy stomps on mushrooms and turtles, to be spot-on to the game, as many fans had actually expected? That's pure nonsense!
*sci-fi.
He was called Koopa first but like slowly down the line got called Bowser in America.
This movie brought us the cutest Yoshi ever.
@@EntertainmentFan11 Yes!
Captian Chaos the Pirate Pimp very true
Agreed
I actually like Super Mario Bros. The Movie, and I have it on DVD
Bob Hoskins and the Directors did not get along at all on the set, and that they would never work with each other again.
Producer Roland Joffe directed quite a bit of the movie. Funny considering he was known for directing serious Oscar bait films like The Killing Fields and The Mission.
It is noticeable that the directors were prima donas with the film decisions.
when I was growing up on the Nintendo he was always called king Koopa, the bowser bs didnt pop up till Nintendo 64
They call him Bowser in the SMB nes manual and also in SMB3 and smbw for the snes they didnt start calling Princess Toadstool Peach until n64
@@nicholasdennis7829 thing is, she was always Peach in japan
Yup same here in my country. She is Kuppa and she is peach.
@@nicholasdennis7829 Bowser King of the Koopas in some manuals
Same in our country ,we called him King Koopa
Fun Fact about the game: Mario has a hat because they didn't have the programming at the time to have his hair move when he did, so they just put a hat on him to solve the issue. :)
Fun fact to program a hat would be similar time frame to hair. Maybe even more :) How dose one make a fun fact? Pulling it from your ass.
I doubt this trivia, as all video game characters at that time had static hair.
@@pizzacatz3174 it's spelt does
@@conoroleary3312 It's spelt does*
Fun fact...Bob hoskins had a hat to cover the fact he had no hair 😂
The train wreck that keeps on giving, the director's and their constant on the fly rewrites that stopped any actor from building the character as they interpreted it. Hoskins is a great actor with good range if he would have been given a solid script I believe he would have played Mario much better than what we got. Sad there was such a chance for something special.
I love the music in this movie.
@Raymond Douglas
Which was originaly written for the Bette Midler movie "Hocus Pocus".
I love the Megadeth song.
me too! I even have the soundtrack on cassette tape!
Need it on CD!
Loved the movie & the vehicles in it
I think the movie would have been entertaining if the title was changed and not connected with the Super Mario Bros. game.
kirby march Barcena but then nobody would have noticed it, it’s the name that brought the attention
I like the movie, its much better than House of the Dead. Sure its not exactly like the game but there are so many easter eggs.

Love your avatar- Toshiro Mifune ?!
Yes the legend himself.
Jw Nj
I love him 😍 He is a total legend.
Always steals the show.
Cheech Marin was also considered for the role of Mario, but passed on the role, later making him regret the decision.
That would have been a good choice. Also maybe Joe Pesci. Although personally I would have loved to have seen Pacino hamming it up.
That makes sense, didn't Cheech prefer weed over mushrooms? ;-)
@@RoqueFortStu I can picture Cheech inadvertently eating Daisy's father. Brings new meaning to chewing the scenery.
@@davidjames579 if it was the other way round, Cheech or Bob Hoskins being eaten, it would be chewing the fat!

Have you seen the documentary on the European blu-ray? Disney came in a week before shooting with a brand new script. Even though the film was fully story boarded to an entirely different script. I think the directors did the best they could with a week's notice to make a film. Nice going Disney.
I like it. I still watch it every now and then... Not everything I like has to be good/well made. Especially if it brings me enjoyment.
I also enjoyed it very much. How the universe established when the metor hit the rock was mind-blowing, for me, as a kid. I feel sad when Leguizamo said that he regretted this movie.
Nah the messed up.
@@dezinfectant Okay good for him was bad anyway and how is that "mind blowing." .🤔😔.
What ? They had a back story at this point !
@@Aceinfinity-le8zc yes
Especially the fact that it had cartoons and comics by this point. Even the manuals had a backstories. Saying that it didn't have a story to work with is an excuse for lazy writing and directing. Not to mention defending bad adaptations
I guess I'm in the minority but I loved this movie as a kid.
You're not alone, Devereaux
