I bet you didn't know some of these are 12-string songs! Jimmy Page used the 12-string guitar more effectively and more creatively than any other guitarist in the Rock n' Roll era. While George Harrison and Roger McGuinn's influence on the electric 12-string is undisputed, Page was a master of both the electric AND acoustic 12-string.
I'd love to compare my list with yours, so please share in the comments! As always, FREE tabs for most of these songs are available per request. Just shoot me an email at markaranalli@gmail.com.

It's a rainy day Monday in Southern California but it's a great morning with Mark 🎉 🙏
I will be in so cal tomorrow my friend. NAMM is here. :)
Great video. Page was definitely one of the best with 12’s. Thanks.
NAMM this week. I have covid and flu. Thankfully, only a day or two left.
Not a big Zep fan but the fact that the 12 plays such a big part in JP's life is amazing!
Before the internet, LZ held a weird spot in my musical life. I only knew the 8 songs that local radio played, 3 of them being Rock n Roll, D'yer Maker, and In the Evening all of which rank low. Zep 3 turned me around.
Killer performances in this one. All the tunes sounded great. Well done.
I appreciate you always showing up Stan.
Mark I agree totally because he used both Acoustic and Electric 12 strings. Also open Tunings in some of the songs. Jimmy Page did more for the 12 string than anybody from the 1960s-1970s era. Great choice of songs. I did not know he played on the Stones "As Tears Go By' . By comparison George Harrison I believe only played 12 string on about two dozen Beatles songs and I don't think ever an Acoustic 12 ( Lennon played Acoustic 12 string for them). Roger McGuinn also really only used an electric 12 string and kept to the same tone most of the time. I admire all 3 of these 12 string Masters. ( Honorable mention Mark Ranalli )you are outstanding on the 12. I hope the Rok Lok is a big hit at NAMM I love mine
You said it better and in fewer words. Won't be the last time that happens Al! :)
The Beatles were the first major band to very prominently use electric 12 string guitars on the Hard Day's Night sessions and thereby inspiring a ton of other acts to use 12 string guitars.
LZ may have used 12 strings more often but one might wonder what rock music would've sounded like without them.
Excellent asalways Mark
Thank you so much Jim. I appreciate you always showing up and being positive. Take care and be well. Mark
I didn't realize some of these songs were on the 12 string! Great video!
I didn't either 2 years ago!
Not coincidentally, these are all my favorite LZ songs. Love that Taylor acoustic.
That's the 150e. It plays and sounds great. It's my goto until I upgrade to the 352.
Mark I was watching how Jimmy played some of these songs and realized that the " Rain Song " is played about 80% on the up stroke, which gives it that spectacular sound! I will say Alex Lifeson has the largest solo catalog than anyone else in Rock music. Very Impressive when comparing them to Jimmy's.
This is a great opening for a discussion. I was weened on Rush. Fly By Night was one of the first real solos I ever mastered (by mastered I mean only suck at it) So many. But, I am strictly a Rush-Signals guy. Even though I was 11 when Signals came out, to me it's the last great Rush Album.
Good stuff Mark!
Thanks Tom. Still grinding away.
The 12 string!!! I thought I noticed something new. Well done!
new backdrop
Great video, Mark, as always. You probably heard someone mention the sound quality on the Squire. Not sure what happened, but I've heard you play it before and it was great. Anyway, I loved all the music. Have a great day!
A bit out of tune because of the intonation but I think I just got a bum one. I love Squier. I own two others.
Hey Hey What Can I Do will be the next tune I dive into. Thanks for the inspiration
I am working on that one myself right now
All I can say about it is although it's simple, to me it's not intuitive. The chords don't change when are where you'd (I'd) think they would. Otherwise, save for a couple of quick pull offs, pretty straight forward. Watch the buzzing and missed string sets if you're using the 12. Have fun with it.
Sorry, I missed you "live" earlier. Great riffs to learn.
Please Mike. No apology necessary. I really appreciate the amazing support. I hope you're well. Mark
Good choices, played well Mark, but I still prefer Roger McGuinn's style of playing to Jimmy's 🎸🎸🎸🙂🙂🙂
I find that interested Sandra. Roger definitely had a unique style. Bordering on bluegrass and or Americana with the picking. Chestnut Mare is a late Byrds classic.
@@8MinuteAxe l believe it was because as James McGuinn, he had learned to play the banjo before later changing his name and moving to the guitar, so he could use a combination of a plectrum and finger picks to work his magic 🙂
second comment - over the hills and far away just gave me the chills! and i like the new set-up!
this is the one i've been waiting for! i think i've told you before that i'm a zep-head - i am def a product of my time, being born in the 60s! now, i'll just sit back and enjoy your wonder-work - thanks once again, mark! hope the NAMM is going well! love from canada! 😊
Thats the way has to be my favorite.
I recorded that one with the Mitchell on a cheap tape recorder but the Gods were with me that day. Came out so sweet.
Now I know why I am so fond of Jimmy Page and LZ! I have been doing open tunings/slide on my acoustic twelves for several years, but I can't say I was aware that Jimmy Page did that much of it.
Email me some stuff when you have time. I'm leaving for NAMM tomorrow and I'll be gone for a week but I'd love to check it out when I get back.
Thank you so much for the dedicated focus on 12-strings. I got about 15 different guitars, but I still don’t have an electric 12-string, which is a must have in a lot of my songs. Your channel is the perfect guide.
Best regards from Norway.
great selection, saved it so I can learn a few!
Rarer than the Dodo and the 4-leaf clover...the White Sox fan. LOL. I only say that because I'm a Mets fan.
😅the only White Sox fan in Canada, as I like to say@@8MinuteAxe
Very well done Mark. There were some tunes that I didn't realize were 12 string, thanks!
Thank you Charles! FYI, my original "master list" of 12 string songs had 62 songs on it. Now it has four times that many!
Top job Mark!
Thank you so much Sam. I appreciate your time and comment. I hope you have a great week. Mark
I did not know about the connection to As Tears Go By - awesome!!!
Awkward time…but wow what playing. Never been a fan but you opened my ears …thanks !
I agree but this is YT's algo telling me the optimal day and time to upload. Perhaps it's wrong this time. LOL
Good choice
Thanks so much. I hope you have an awesome week. I appreciate your time and comment. Mark
That’s a joyous recording - thank you for sharing Mark. You already know of my love for Led Zep; this selection of yours simply adds to the high esteem in which I hold Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page - and your good self of course 😊
Another masterpiece Mark. Tangerine is a work of art indeed, as is everything else they did.
Happy and Rockin’ New Year Mark 😎 As usual, i not only enjoy and love the historical intros you present so well, but obviously your performance is rock solid. So good…! Love the new backdrop too. Still January and 2024 is definitely, undisputed Year of Change 🥳
I knew it! I knew it would be a woman to notice the new set first. LOL. Thanks so much. I sincerely appreciate the positivity. I hope you have an amazing year!!
Rain Song is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs! I learned it standard tuning, around 74. (Got sheet music from Led Zeppelin Complete). My 12 string is a 69 D12-20, and she doesn't like me changing tunings! Guess I really need another 12 string!
I love that Squier 12 string!
Great stuff! I'd love a deep dive into Jimmy Page's relationship with the 12-string. His history with non-6 string instruments (like the Hurdy Gurdy) must be fascinating.
Hey brother. Thanks for always making time. I'm getting over Covid and the flu and I'm heading to L.A. tomorrow afternoon. I'm wiped out but I'm happy that I got hit a week early and not right smack in the middle of it. Plus, who there will be more protected than me? I'm fully vaccinated, had my annual flu shot, and just got both. I may sell my anibodies on the corner. :). Talk soon.
Brought me back! Need to hone my 12 string chops! Thank you!
Absolutely awesome Mark.✌.
Well, you did it again, Mark: made me want to play 12 string (electric and acoustic) just because it’s fun and beautiful! Agree that Jimmy Page’s use of 12 string was genius, and inspiring. Stairway’s hauntingly beautiful sound when it transitions into electric 12 at 2:13 is incomparable, as is the sound on The Song Remains the Same. Have you ever done a dedicated video on Tommy Shaw’s use of 12-string? He’s also been inspiring to me - taking things that aren’t overly complicated and using them so powerfully. And encouragingly, for those of us mortals who might be discouraged from pursuing 12-string because we can’t attain Leo Kottke’s or Doyle Dyke’s technique.
Very cool list. I'm a little surprised Poor Tom didn't make it in the list. But then again, it's not a very well known cut.
Excellent work! Another great video.
One of your associates sent me a free Rok-Lok! I love it! Gonna get some more for my other guitars, and tell all of my guitar buddies about it! :)
Not a big LZ fan, but these are all nice selections, and very well played!
I was noticing, as you cycled through various makes of 12s, that some of them have the main & octave G-string pair reversed from their usual order. Sup with that?
Fred
Mark, sorry I missed the Premiere earlier. I had contractors finishing up re-siding my house and lost track of time. (I now have spent more adding improvements than it originally cost.) These are all great songs played exceptionally well by you. Two studios? I'm jealous. But I have a wood shop and a man cave so I guess I can't complain.
Hey Bob. The basement was finished when we bought the house. That was the only thing I wanted. A finished basement with a walkout door and a 1/2 bath. I got a full instead which is of no consequence unless I'm really in the doghouse someday. But to get demoted two flights is more than my disposition would ever expose itself to. LOL.
Good morning Mark and loyal viewers. Let’s get strung out today? Ok bad pun
come on man, don't string me along
that fell a little flat
Totally agree with your take on Page’s dominance of the 12 string.
I’m a huge fan of Harrison and McGuinn because I knew of them earlier than I knew of Page.
Great list of Page’s 12 string work and your #1 is also mine.
@@yellowcat1310 🤣🤣👍🏻
@@LumpyDiz 🤣🤣👍🏻
Thanks! Awesome video!
Sounding great as usual Mark. You need the double-neck and a black dragon suit for TSRTS though😂…looking forward to the next vid, keep them coming👍
Wow, thanks! Sounds great! :)
third [!] comment - can i please put in a request for you to do the combo the song remains the same / the rain song on the HB? i do so enjoy your playing, mark, cheers!
Thanks again Mark. Great slide work! Why did you use the pinky first and then the third finger for sliding later?
If you want to hear an early dose of Page on the 12, seek out Jackie DeShannon’s “Don’t Turn Your Back on Me”.
I will check it out tonight for sure. I've learned so much from viewers. I really appreciate you contributing to the conversation and teaching me something. Please take care and have a great week! Mark
Fantastic playing! I especially love that Taylor 12 string. Is it a 150e with sapele back and sides?
Hey mark what is the double neck your playing
Harley Benton
It's the Harley Benton 612DC I believe. It's the only double neck they make so it shouldn't be hard to find. it was perpetually on back order for about 3 years but I hear it's easier to get now. I recommend it. For $450 it's worth it for the photo shoot alone! And only 1.7 lbs heavier than my 88 LP!!
Hi Mark,
Where do you get the backing tracks from?
Mike
even better the second time. lol
lol. much appreciated
Question: What would a 12-string guitar sound like if it had 6 steel strings and 6 nylon strings? I.e. the lower string in each pair is steel while the higher is nylon, or vice versa.
This is the only version of The Rain Song with the "G" string tuned to D instead of G. I broke the high G string on my 12 string trying to figure it out. All the other tutorials have it as G. All the tabs list it as G. But this tutorial lists it as D. Is it D or G? What is the correct tuning for the Rain Song?
Please don’t use a HB to cover Jimmy Page of the Squire
