I have a question. In the hockey example you give you make no mention of the last sentence and the switching of thought mid sentence. "Some people object that fighting sends the message to children that fighting is acceptable, but I will argue fighting actually prevents more injuries than it causes."
First half of the sentence is about the impact on children, second half is on injuries. I find that bothersome yet you make no mention of it. It is a straw man. Instead of answering the question they set up for themselves they are suggesting that they are going to answer the question by changing the subject and answering an easier question.
Thoughts?

I think that is what he meant about bad style etc. The structure is fine though. It gives direction where direction should be given, but there is a fallacy.
