Regarding the essay. I say that the focus, and the strong argument is: have teachers the right to ban laptops? So the focus should be on combating this argument.
The possible counterarguments would be: is banning laptops beneficial or disruptive? The arguments presented in this video regarding the right of teachers that didn't seem fair reflected banning or requiring students to do something outside class, while banning the laptops refer to something that is happening during the course of the class. So that's why they didn't seemed like strong arguments. I think a stronger argument would be that laptops are tools, so they should be treated as such. Students should not have the right of using Facebook during class, as they are not allowed to play tic-tac-toe on paper. So we should also ban papers because students can use it in a way that disturbs the class? The ban should be focused on what students are allowed to do with laptops and not to the laptops. If students are not disturbing class, they are not requiring more effort from the part of the teacher so he is not entitled to ban them. So if teachers want to ban them, they should do it on the premises that laptops and not their usage is bad.
Another argument: if students have signed for classes and paid knowing that they can use laptops, it's not fair to ban them after the contract was signed.
    Just my 2 cents.

I want to point out that the two analogies offered refer to activities that take place outside of the classroom, whereas the laptop use happens within the classroom. Wouldn't the analogies, to actually work, need to be confined within the classroom?
