Another very informative and helpful video Nic!
I have solar panels (5.6kW), a myenergi Zappi for charging my Kona 64kW EV and last summer installed 10kW of home battery storage. I am currently on an Octopus 2-year fixed rate deal, which I moved to in September 2021, just before energy costs rose dramatically. The tariff is based on Economy 7, so I pay the lower rate between 00:30 and 07:30 every day.
I charge my EV (I do about 10,000m a year) and home batteries as much as I can using solar. During the peak solar generation period (generally beginning of April to end of October) I rarely have to charge the car or battery storage on Economy 7. This is giving me the lowest energy cost for half the year. I do still export a fair amount of solar to the grid though, so will be adding a further 5kW of battery storage just as soon as my installer can actually get hold of one.
During the winter months there is of course far less solar, so I often need to charge the EV on Economy 7. I've just gone through my first winter since installing the home batteries and I have been able to charge them to full every night during the Economy 7 period. This means I start each day with fully charged batteries and use any solar generated to power the house, keep the batteries topped up, or export to the grid.
My inverter allows me to choose when I want to fully charge the batteries (if required) using Economy 7. Once I've got the additional battery I'll just leave it set like this all year round. I am looking to avoid using anything from the grid during the peak rate period.

I’ve been on Go for 2 years and not touched the peak rate once during that time - solar and battery storage is powering my house, all at off-peak rates. [I export very little]

I agree. Intelligent octopus is a far better option and is currently offering a six hour overnight tariff at 7.5p/kWh, (Seeboard area) and 41p/kWh peak plus additional times as required for charging.
I would wave a red flag about smart chargers, which could be taxed by the government as the legislation was brought in from mid-2021.
Our use of Tesla PowerWall, the shift daytime consumption to the off-peak rate.

Great video Nick- what about us with solar only (I have 8kWp array) and no battery/EV to charge (there's a large group of people out there with just solar)? I am a heavy electricity user and am about to make the jump to Octopus (using your link) and wonder if the "Flexible Octopus" tariff is the way to go? I still claim the old FiT and cannot see that any of the Octopus export tariffs are more economical than keeping the old FiT and the Flexible Octopus tariff? I welcome your comments and look forward to your next videos

Depends on which version of fit your on to be honest. Some fit are assumed export and at very high rates in which case you can keep that export with its supplier and bring your import to octopus. Some fits are meter'd and less good on the export rate so you might be better on Octopus Flux. It also matters how much your IMPORTING still. See the playlist file of octopus deals so far but FLUX might be best depending on how much and when you import. Thanks for considering using my referral link MEANS a lot and really helps give me motivation to research all this as much as I can

So basically this video was an advert for Octopus Go at 120 off peak for 4 hours. Why not compare it to British Gas EV rate 12p for 5 hours between 00:00 hrs and 05:00. Surely using you average that is far cheaper in that you can get an additional 25% of time over Octopus Go for the same price?

One thing to watch if you are trying to maximise the use of cheap overnight energy on GO is that you have an appropriate size of main fuse fitted. With a 60A fuse on a single phase supply you can easily exceed the maximum 14 kW draw. Car charging plus battery charging plus a couple of kitchen appliances is more than 14 kW so an upgrade to a 100A fuse would be advisable. Your installer should have sorted this - mine didn't.

    • @NicolasRaimo

      Great point

    • @Adeleisha
      @Adeleisha Год назад

And your DNO might try and charge you for this (ours did, cheeky!), but IMO they shouldn't if your main fuse hasn't been updated for decades, as a matter of principle. Ours was the original 1930s bitumen-filled 60A which had evidence of historical overheating (bitumen leakage; 200m2 house) so I argued it was unsafe. The engineer agreed and upgraded to 100A for free 👍

It changes very quickly I have 10kh battery and 3k8 of solar, over the winter 6 months exported very little and diverted very little into my EV. We are now in the first week of April and I've put 60kw into the car and met 85% of my house requirement from solar. I have got octopus go but need it now but will keep in case we have some bad weather

    • @NicolasRaimo

What would you call too much solar? You might have just enough to cover your winter use but far too much in summer…. Or you deemed having an extra 5 panels would pay for it self in export payback…
