Little tip: cut your outside corners at 45.5° so that the gap is in the back (against the wall) instead of in the front (where you see it). Nice video man!
True that. It actually isn't a gap in front, it was a bit of paint that peeled off and looked like it lol
I only know Milwaukee and Festool that can adjust to 45.5
Similarly cut inside corners at 42 angle
46 degrees on outside corners and 44 degrees for inside mitres
Typically outside corners are not exactly square because of the metal corner bead installed over the sheetrock before mudding. The solution is to cut the outside miters so they match that angle which is slightly off 45 degrees.
I just retired and now have time to do things I have never done before around the house and of course, fits into my new budget. Unlike all the other many DYI guys who shoot these types of videos what I like about you is that you go into the detail so many other people assume you have a clue about and make DYI for people like me understandable and relatively easy. Watched several projects of yours which frankly I have found informative and the details matter you do a great job for the underskilled novices like myself so thank you! John in Georgia
Thanks John! I really appreciate it, that was my goal for this channel. I noticed the same thing is a lot of channels show the big parts, but don't explain the why or the details and thats usually where people have that "Eureka" moment, so I'm trying to carve out a niche and make everything I do understandable by most everyone as if I was teaching them one on one. The channel is growing slowly, but I'm glad it is reaching some people and helping out! Good luck on all your projects. Thanks for watching and feel free to email for help!
I’ve watched so many videos on this and not yet has anyone mentioned the mark you made to remind you which way the angle needs to go, THANK YOU!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks so much. I try and explain little things that most would breeze over assuming others know it already

So refreshing to see someone take pride in their work. Excellent job and video!
Thanks. I take pride in everything I do.
this is one of the best baseboard videos i have seen . Thanks very much.
Don’t know how many baseboard videos I’ve watched but yours was so helpful and informative, thank you!!
Anytime! Just happy to help
This was a great video, thanks for making it.
Trim 101 by an awesome carpenter. Thank you for the lesson. Your perfection ! Wow we need more of you out thete!
Wow, thanks so much! Glad I could help
gotta reply back from my previous post to you and simply put keep doing it your way so folks like myself with the tools but no experience can get the most for the buck and you will be successful at what your doing here and what more can anyone ask but know your subscribers and fit there needs. So for so Dam good guy. Once again thank you.
Thanks very much! My baseboard job tomorrow (my own kitchen) will look more professional because you made this to share with us.
Other posters have some good tips as well.
Thanks! Good luck
Extremely helpful. You are the real deal.
Thank you so much! Just laid my floor, and now I'm ready for the baseboards thanks to you!
Thanks! Anytime
You mentioned 'silicone' as the caulking you were applying in the joint. The product you used is a latex product and paintable - which is great!. Just want to make sure others don't use regular silicone to seal the joint. You'll be in for a surprise when you go to repaint down the road as most silicones are not paintable. Great tips in the video. Kudos.
Good point, I caught that as well. Slicone is not paintable. But you explained it well.
10 stars for neatness and perfection! I have to do ceiling trim which is actually footing or something, not sure I have the patience or eyesight to do this up so high, lol. Tfs, Laura
This video was really awesome. Keep up the great work
I’m doing baseboards in a week. This video is going to be my go-to reference. Well explained, thanks!
Anytime! Good luck on yours
I saved this video for reference. Thank you.
Fantastic video! Thank you! I've been struggling with my baseboards for a while now, I live in a 80+ year old house and the walls and floors are all concrete and a bit wavy and have round corners so it's been a hassle trying to get everything to match perfectly. This definitely helped! Keep up the great work mate 🙂
I leave the tape on until after i air nail it or until i need to nail where the tape is. nice vid. thanks!
I was watching decor ideas now im here :P but omg so satisfying to watch THISSSSSSSSSS
Good tip on how to peel the tape off the corners. I learned that the hard way and it can really tick you off when your paint chips off a perfectly cut mitre. However, I stopped using tape and just use CA glue now to avoid the whole ordeal.
ca is grate until you glue your fingers to the board lol
What a great husky. Also many helpful tips...thank you
Great job! And thank you for all the tips 😊
This is absolutely the best baseboard video I’ve seen. Very good information and very well presented. Thank you!!!
Thanks!
I love this video. You are so clear, and you take your time. Thank you so much!
Thank you! Glad I could help
Nice. Only thing I'd add is that "painting the nail holes" will leave clear sheen blotches where each nail was touched up with such a large brush. Either use a fine artist brush to just cover the filler, or use white putty (Minwax or similar) specifically made for filling nail holes. It comes in various colors. Easiest would be the artist brush. If your intention is to put an entire 3rd coat on, then just use a regular paint brush like in the video. -Awesome dog.
great video - U did a great job - thanks for the information!!!
Thank you, I fill more confident to do it myself now. 🙏🏽
Great video man thanks for putting it together.
Amazing! I feel much less nervous about my upcoming trim job now. THANK YOU!
Anytime!
Very nice and thank you, I have baseboards to install myself
Nice bro, well explained and straight to the point. Great job, also nice dog!
Very detailed instructions. Thank you.
Well done! Easy to understand.
Very good teacher. You simplified very adroitly.
Great tutorial. Well done, thanks for the help!
Thanks. You're very welcome
Excellent work
I’ve been wanting to redo the baseboards in my house to look exactly like this! Thank you so much for your detailed video!!
Very helpful video!
The video was perfect and easy to follow! Thank you for making it doable project for the novice!
Anytime, glad I could help!
"What we're going to do is sneak up on this." 😀Cute dog. We have a husky as well.
Lol I sneak up on lots of things while I work, never see it coming. That's 👌, great dogs
Painter's Tip: use 33 latex window glazing putty to fill nail holes. No sanding, instantly paintable, doesn't shrink.
Interesting tip. I have some left over from when I reglazed my windows last fall. I have plenty of trim to replace from another project, so I'll be sure to give this a try.
drydex is 100% fine. if you overfill with putty you'd be slowly slicing off with a razor. As a pro of course either is fine but for the average DIYer drydex is easier
Would that work on sheet rock nail holes also?
@@breannacollins6098 yes it will on small holes
Yep. My friend Pete, who is a painter, taught me that trick many years ago. Just press a large ball up against the nail hole, fills the nail hole like a charm.
Very detailed explanation, great!
Thanks very much.. we are doing baseboard next week. I appreciate that you took the time to make this informative video.
Awesome! Happy to help. Good luck on yours, let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching
Beautifully done so neat😁
Good job with this video. I've installed baseboard in the past and found that after caulking the top seam against the wall that I needed tape off the base and touch up paint the wall color too. Mostly because I didn't smooth out the caulking well enough with my finger.
Jesse, Thanks for the video. I Liked it and Subscribed to your channel. I really liked your tip about using TRIM caulk instead of just the general or all-purpose stuff. I've used the general stuff before when putting up crown moulding. It's just a couple of years later, and I can definitely see cracks that have formed. Thanks again. -- Christopher
Thanks so much. You're welcome
TY this really helped me.

Awesome, thanks so much. Yeah depending who you talk to here some do, some don't. I never have, this works great for me. I despise plumbing as well lol painting I don't mind at all.
Great video, great craftsmanship! Thank you :)

Well, glad I could help something lol
Very good brother, God bless you.

Great work.
good stuff, thank you!
Great video . Thanks!!
I wish my builder was more like u x
Nice clean job........thank you for ur video !!!!!!!!
Great job has helped me a lot! But how do you do inside corners with straight baseboard?
Thanks, glad it helped. With flat stock base like I used you can either mitre it, just do the opposite of the outside corner and put your tape on the backside. Or you can do what I did and just butt them up to each other like you do a door frame. Then run a thin bead of caulk vertically between the butt joint like I showed at the door frame and paint it. Super simple. Hope that helps, and more questions feel free to ask or email
You’re a pretty good presenter. Keep up the good work. 🇺🇸
Thanks! Will do
Good stuff bro, thanks dude
beautiful dog !!, thanks for the video
Thanks!
As soon as I saw that magnificent Siberian dog, I knew this was going to be an excellent video.
Thanks. Great job
Thumbs up, very good info
Great video! Thank you!
Thanks!
Nice video. One other trick I use for outside mitres to get them super tight is to very very lightly burnish the outside edges of the material with a screwdriver shaft. Hold the shaft at no more than 5 degrees to the face of the board being careful to sneak up on getting the end of the mitre cuts to join.
Absolutely!
This was really helpful and informative 👍🏾
Happy to help. Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I would suggest a few things in the finishing process. If you use your finger to fill the holes you will have excess on the surface and your finger can leave the putty indented. I use a putty knife to put the nail filler in to leave it flush with the trim. When it is dry sand lightly with 220. Following that I would suggest painting a quick coat over the whole baseboard to avoid flashing spots. It will have a better final finish. And this would cover all the caulking that was just put on as well. Then cut the wall paint into the trim for a perfect line. I agree that in a perfect scenario to pre-paint the baseboard if possible. That makes it much easier with the final coat to not have to worry about cutting tight to the floor. Nice job!
Do you paint the baseboard before installing using a sprayer, roller or brush? Does pre-primed MDF need another coat of primer? One or two coats of paint? TY
Pre paint with a smooth finish 4" roller. 1 coat over pre primed base is all you need.
Awesome vid, thank you. Finding studs before starting and mark them on the wall or floor with a wee smidge of painters tape = no touch ups
What a great idea.
@@michaelb.8953 Thank you, I get one every now & then :P
Is he looking for the stud to nail into the stud?
Yes. I mentioned that. The nails will not hold to drywall, you need to fire them into studs
you are a master of your trade. well done sir
Appreciate it. Happy to help
Great and informative vid, thank you for sharing.
Glad I could help, thanks for watching
great vid, thank you
Nice video, thank you!
Thanks
Nice job & thanks for the easy music
No prob
I like this strategy and tutorial for the common homeowner that's getting into it themselves. However there are measuring and other techniques that would save major time and create better habits for those doing this professionally.
For sure there is. I just wanted to simplify the basics is all for anybody to do
@@JessedoesDIY You did really well. Presentation is key.
Very helpful!
Anytime!
Very good tutorial for *DIY* Homeowners.
Pros never make multiple cuts on the 45*, side too many ways to make a mistake, always cut the other flat 90* side.
Now take both sides outside and glue tape & nail, no need to wait for the glue to dry. Take inside and install.
Also, make two corner samples, place in corners and position till tight fit. Measure from outside corner to other side, do that in both directions. Glue nail install..
Always a perfect fit.
It also looks pretty when you paint the boards with semi gloss paint the same color as the wall in the room.
I'm still in shock over how may of the RUclips "how to" videos don't mention gluing corners. Thank you for including that step :)
i brad nail the corners together....then you can finish right away and not have to wait an hr
Chris Caron I do both... glue and brad nail the corners from both sides.
It takes too much time if you do this for living. When you're ready with your first corners I'm done with the whole flat nailing the baseboards
J A customers don’t pay enough for amazing work. Trust me if the moneys worth it we’ll do it.
great tips
...and an excellent video. Thank you.
Very helpful, thank you.
Glad I could help, thanks for watching
Great tips - some things I have done in the past and some new ideas I plan to use in my current project. Just wondering - why not use white caulk to fill the nail holes rather than the Spackle material? I've used caulk in my last project and it seemed to work well.
Thanks! You can, but some caulk will tend to shrink, and the spackle is more stable depending on temp swings. Also easier to clean by sanding if you get some where you don't want it, and caulk can yellow over time. I just prefer to use spackle where it's designed for, and caulk where it's made for.
Great video . Great tips explained all the terms used. Excellent. Canadian ++
Thanks!
