@@Vartan297 No, but the Z8 has a much faster reading sensor. This also doesn't have a hot shoe which means no strobes or hotshoe powered/interfaced audio or other accessories.
When I heard about a full frame compact camera coming out, I was excited but, that excitement soon died when I heard it didn’t have an EVF, wasn’t weather sealed, and had an electronic shutter… so that’s a no for me.
That lens is dreadfully bad. Cool camera body, but man that lens is just an unacceptable product in 2024. I literally laughed out loud when you said it wasn't sharp corner to corner. F8 and STILL not sharp at below 30 MP sensor...someone egg Sigma on to make a pancake instead.
This is such a ridiculous take. They packed a ton of high end professional features into a tiny body. Most of the limitations wouldn't be an issue for its intended use case. I think its a great camera for the right person/situation. A small camera that can get professional quality photos/videos. It shoots 6k, that's insane. How often are you even recording clips longer than 10 mins in run and gun situations? This is perfect for documentaries, travel, or other situations where you need to be mobile and film at a moments notice. I think this is a really cool little camera.
Totally vlogging camera. Not a photographer’s camera. Great vlogging or short content camera. I mean, I wasn’t expecting a Q3 with interchangeable lenses… or was I ;)
Forget the camera. I’m at an absolute loss that Panasonic couldn’t make a cheap pancake lens that’s sharp, f2.8 and has autofocus… How are you supposed to manually focus on a sunny day with a camera that doesn’t have an EVF?? What are they thinking??
You can tell this lens was a last minute panic rush job, when they realized the 18-40 wasn't ready and they have nothing else compact to use with this thing.
Its a great concept but the complete absence of any way to connect a view finder (even an ovf on the cold shoe will be problematic due to parallax ) is a problem for me. If they release a compact prime series of 2.8 lenses , that'll probably solve the physical size issue , but i think id keep comimg back to the lack of evf as the final decision maker. Now, if they build a full frame version of the Gx-8 then thats a whole new ballgame for stills shooters. Id have already ordered one.

Not being able to really be able to shoot with artificial light really is a bummer for a travel camera that you would expect to be able to tackle most of the situation you'd be expecting on a trip. If it was the exact same camera but had a half shutter like the Canon R8 (electronic front curtain, mecanichal second curtain) I wouldn't have complained at all and would have probably put the camera on my list of maybe camera to buy. As it stands right now I feel like this is more a full frame small video camera made for creators, and stills clearly weren't a priority on this camera. If I wante da single SD small full frame travel camera, I think that for the price point I would rather look at the Sony A7C (the first gen) which can be had for around the same amount of money. About the same sensor performance, about the same size, autofocus is about as good too (or maybe better?). IBIS and video aren't as good, but hey it has a shutter, a hotshoe and a viewfinder, that's enough for me to consider it as my only travel camera. The S9 falls short unfortunately, again just because of that lack of shutter. I don't see how they really couldn't fit one at all.
The lack of a view finder was my #1 decision to buy this camera. Unfortunately the camera fails to transfer photos and LUTs via the LUMIX Lab. I noticed you have the same problem seen in your video.
How interesting that Pentax managed a huge viewfinder on their ME Super full frame cameras back in the 1970s whilst producing a camera smaller than this S9 ... smaller lenses too. Why is it now so difficult?
The 1970s Pentax ME Super does not have a digital flip screen that can rotate and flip to the side for self-portraits. It also does not have 8-stop IBIS. That Pentax was light but that also means you had to be careful when shooting slower shots in case of your hand wobbles while holding the camera because it was light. Just these 2 alone of the Lumix S9 offer major functionality and more varied options than what the Pentax ME Super could do. Furthermore, that Pentax ME Super could not shoot video at all.
It will be interesting to see if Panasonic finds a market for this. I think that serious photographers/videographers will spend the extra $300 or so to just go ahead and get the S5ii, but content creators who JUST want an easy-to-use tool that is small and better than a mobile phone may be willing to fork out that much money.
If this camera had a view finder, 30min hard cap record limit a hot shoe and the price didn’t change it would be the best “modern camera” on the market for 99% of people..
Hey Ted! Thanks for your video. I am an owner of your to two "film" packs and someone who really appreciated the interview series you used to do! When the Zf came out, you mentioned a similar line as you did in this video, is that you were interested in getting similar "looks" from your presets into the Nikon camera. I assumed that would be pretty hard to do... and given that it has never come up again, I am guessing that was ultimately the case. Maybe it would be easier to do with the Panasonic LUTs? That would make sense and you should definitely put them out if you can. I am in NO way a Nikon fanboy, but it is hard to look at that 26mm f8 versus the Nikon Z 26mm f2.8 and not question whether there were other BETTER decisions Panasonic could have made. Their micro 4/3 lenses and cameras were great, and I root for them... but it seems like a missed opportunity (but I really want to see them succeed... so hoping best for them in the future.)
Thanks. I still believe the alliance is not using the full potential of the 3 members for the L mount. Well the S9 main target is content creators doing short videos, but the Sony ZV-E1 body looks more interesting. #Panasonic #lumix did deliver a lot of cameras with nice body design. Pretty sure people or photographers would love a FF version rangefinder style, using an updated GX8 body design with the tilting EVF. Those #Sigma contemporary primes would fit nicely on a Lumix FF version of the GX8. Sometimes I feel other makers are taking ideas from Lumix, like the Sony A7c, the audio Ozo system... The alliance should sit down and rethink things in term of camera bodies, who does what: Vlogging cameras, hybrid cameras, sports cameras, high MP cameras for landscape and studios, compact cameras... and so on.
Disapointing. Design is very cool But no Evf, Hot shoe, M shutter is not what i whant. And price 1500$,more that S5 first version with Hot shoe, M shutter... And less than s5ii. I dont understand... Why? Lens 26mm for fre is ok but no Af IS STUPPID. 3+/5
I think it's funny they gave everybody that 26mm F8 manual lens, to test out the camera. Savvy reviewers / shooters had no issue w/ it...while others, seemed to not know how to work around it lol.
No EVF, no EFCS/mechanical shutter, no hot shoe, and a prank 26mm f/8 pancake lens make this terrible for photography. No headphone jack, no hot shoe, heat recording limits and low battery life make this terrible for videography It seems like it's supposed to be for TikTok/Reels/Shorts content where audio doesn't really matter since you'll be replacing it anyway, but no one is buying a $1500 full frame camera plus lenses to do this. Get a $1300 Fujifilm X-S20, or an even cheaper Canon R50, or save yourself the trouble and just use your phone like most people already do.
And eos R8 that has similar weight and price but also has evf, hot shoe, mechanical shutter, 2 hours recording and 40fps. Also a very compact 28f2.8 pamcake

@@keima1110 a miss type (corrected in original comment). Funny thing that IBIS is the only wrong thing when all the other limitations apply when talking about R6ii.
As a Sony A6300 user this Lumix S9 lacks features which won´t make me want to switch brands. Lack of EVF. AF Tracking (of fast moving subjects like cars?) and of course: price...
No shutter, no evf, not remotely ergonomic for heavy FF lenses, no possible flash.... No thanks. Also coming in ridiculous colors, I assume to try and drag in the beginner crowd, and then they price it totally out of a beginner friendly budget. I mean 1500 for a stripped down camera is insane. 1-200$ more get the Fuji XT5 ffs.
Hopefully Leica made this into the new CL camera (with full frame sensor , mech shutter and EVF). I wont mind larger body with EVF (larger size means larger surface for heat dissipation) if Lumix made it and hopefully they also made lens like 14mm and 20mm micro 4/3
Not a camera or lens for me. Or for most on RUclips. But a nice compact ff travel and short form content camera, esp if the price comes down a couple bills. I don’t understand all the hate from people from whom this camera is *not* meant. Poor marketing decisions from lumix, and this prob originated from out of date development from years ago. A new iPhone pro is a better choice for the target audience imo
I very much like your reviews which are to the point and insightful. The most important question is how does the rear screen perform in bright sunlight. The second question relates to using adapted m lenses for zonal focussing point and shoot for street, where an electronic shutter has its advantages, are there any practical disadvantages.
I am strangely intrigued by this camera despite the lack of viewfinder. There really needs to be more pancake and near pancake lenses produced at reasonable prices for this mount. F 2.8 or a bit higher. $300-600. For me its a hobby/travel/family shot camera. The luts sound great as I just haven't spent enough time to really learn post processing in depth yet. Before I heard the price I was thinking $12-1300 body only due to the shutter, viewfinder and shoe. I suppose it does have good ibis. Supposedly preorders get you a "free" 26mm lens. Problem is I am only seeing preorders on body only in black. Always a catch. Not interested in the large lenses combo just to get a color I want😔. Weird marketing.
For me, terrible camera, having no viewfinder is not only poor in bright light but hopeless for those who need reading glasses for close vision. Then the dials on the back are like a GX850 just awful with that rotating dial. Then there is the manual f8 lens, what were Pana thinking.
I’m expecting them to launch the same body with a GX9ii later this year based off of what they did with the s5ii and the g9ii. I already invested in 2 s5ii’s. Honestly the lenses are the thing that are heavy, not the cameras 😂
Yes lenses make a big difference, but the S9 is still more than double the weight of the GM5 it was modeled after. You could have 2x GM5s each with a 14mm f/2.5 lens and it would still weigh the same as ONE S9 with its f/8 pancake. Not to mention the 14mm gathers more than twice as much light, has AF, metal mount, etc. In summary, I think this camera should have been for M43 haha.
@@MrJed_s like I said, I think we can expect a m43 version later this year. The s9 will not replace my s5ii, but it will be a great entry level full frame camera for the L Mount system
I can not see the point of this camera or this MF lens, as an example Nikon got full frame AF pancake 26mm 2.8 lens that very compact and i am using it with full frame camera Nikon Z7 of course it is not compact and not cheap kit but at least I got a camera that i can carry with me everyday and can do almost everything.

Soo...this is a panny boy ZV-E1? Not understanding why they would make this camera. Clearly, I'm not the target audience. The "for content creators" marketing seems to be trying to pry cell phones out of the hands of teenagers. Good luck!
So no evf and no cold shoe, makes this totally unusable for photography. Crazy short record times, and no headphone jack makes it totally unusable for videographers. And £1500 body only is rediculous. As for that F8 manual lens, what was Panasonic thinking????
This camera makes no sense given its price. You are much better off getting a Nikon Zf or Sony A7c ii. Panasonic must have borrowed Canon’s cripple hammer. With the lack of feature it should be half the half to make it a compelling buy. I can’t believe Panasonic discontinued the gx9 for this steaming mess.
Stupids, but MANY!!!! by Radu Florea I want to talk about a trend in the world of photography that is slowly moving towards the consumption of things made without science, without having a starting point, only for the category of "wanna be" otherwise called Hipsters. A category is only defined by cool, trendy. This can also be seen in the photo industry. Lumix released a mess called the S9 and now Pentax made a downright idiotic move. Under the code name PENTAX 17. A revival of film photography, but as you expected, the Hipsters are reviving this niche. Because it's COOL. Because it makes him feel like a 14th grade Peter McKinnon. A film camera, NEW!!! Now designed, now released on a 17mm film (so that the hipsters have 72 frames to shoot because they still need too much to think of a frame and then the producer comes to help them with some extra frames on roll of film). And again, just like Lumix makes the same mistake that denotes the desire for "wanna be" as the target audience. I mean MANY. No external flash, only with a flash toy with synchronization at 1/125, without manual focus, because you cannot remove the lens, limiting yourself to a generalist focus zone, without FULL MANUAL mode !!!! That is, an ocasionally and vacations camera with the children at the beach made by an amateur, unapproved, without too many claims. I MEAN = Hipsters who want to be cool. In my opinion, it defeats the purpose because working on film requires experience, otherwise you spoil many rolls of film which, by the way, is expensive to work on. If you still want to revive the retro idea, do it correctly, with all the necessary technical aspects, 35mm film, full manual, full focus, flash sync at 1000sec. We become cool without being cool. We want to appear without being, we want to appear without having a solid base. And that's what I mean in everything.
GM5, m4/3 enjoyable pancake 20mm f1.7 or even the kit zoom is more reasonable than this blackhole, promotion gadget Just to add: it has an evf and an hot shoe in a smaller body.
It's nice to see them trying something a bit different. I had a GX9, and an LX100ii for a while and absolutely loved both, personally for me, an update to either of those would have been more compelling.

Design is very cool
But no Evf, Hot shoe, M shutter is not what i whant.
And price 1500$,more that S5 first version with Hot shoe, M shutter... And less than s5ii. I dont understand...
Why?
Lens 26mm for fre is ok but no Af IS STUPPID.
3+/5
you have to say positive things about it to be invited to Japan I heard
I think it's funny they gave everybody that 26mm F8 manual lens, to test out the camera. Savvy reviewers / shooters had no issue w/ it...while others, seemed to not know how to work around it lol.
No EVF, no EFCS/mechanical shutter, no hot shoe, and a prank 26mm f/8 pancake lens make this terrible for photography.
No headphone jack, no hot shoe, heat recording limits and low battery life make this terrible for videography
It seems like it's supposed to be for TikTok/Reels/Shorts content where audio doesn't really matter since you'll be replacing it anyway, but no one is buying a $1500 full frame camera plus lenses to do this.
@@keima1110 R8 no ibis, poor battery life, poor video tools, no open gate, no 6K, silly data rates and restriction around 10bit log or hdr pq, 2hr recording in lab environment there’s even reports of it overheating in photos, raw burst in proprietary files, strictly controlled rf mount lenses.
@@PhotoVideoTechOz R6 has ibis.
Sony is very quiet. Rx1rIII Full Frame with viewfinder, Zeiss(or G master) 35mm f2, real time tracking autofocus. Hopefully not a penny over 2K
And it's not weather sealed... How many cut backs does this camera need ? For 1500 bucks !
A new iPhone pro is a better choice for the target audience imo
i would prefer this as a micro four third camera with higher frame rates for video and a smaller design
Please make one about the Fuji X-T5! I really wanted your opinion since I thinking about leaving canon for fuji!
I waited for a q3 with interchangeable lens. Until that i stik with my q3. I am a stills shooter
Old friend! Would you recommend this one of the Q3 for a dad and frequent traveler? Sure love your thoughts and views on these all things.
how does the phase detect work in manual focus?
I would love to have the LUT version! Please help us who don't use Lightroom/Photoshop for photo editing (wink wink)
Too small for my hands, too limited (no headphone jack, mech shutter, flash), so I will stick with my S5 and maybe S5II later. Thanks.
Does it have 4k/6k photo mode and Live composite?
No Viewfinder?
…just need a low profile fast lens like the 18mm that came with the Leica CL
For me, terrible camera, having no viewfinder is not only poor in bright light but hopeless for those who need reading glasses for close vision. Then the dials on the back are like a GX850 just awful with that rotating dial. Then there is the manual f8 lens, what were Pana thinking.
fair review though Ted as always
Do those luts apply to raw files or just jpg?
Both can
How bad and expensive the lens should be to complain about it?
Overheats. Quickly. Pass
How long are you shooting for? It’s not meant to shoot interviews
Nice video clip
I bet whoever designed G100 designed this S9... They would likely go down the same fate.
It resembles the Leica Q series.
No EVF no buy.
designed for Video* Content Creators
Recording limit in that S9 model...in 2024................. We Feel................ very Disappointed with Panasonic S9............ #getwellsoonpanasonic
Soo...this is a panny boy ZV-E1? Not understanding why they would make this camera. Clearly, I'm not the target audience. The "for content creators" marketing seems to be trying to pry cell phones out of the hands of teenagers. Good luck!
There's a market for TikTok video creation and sounds like this is perfect for that.
Stupids, but MANY!!!! by Radu Florea
I want to talk about a trend in the world of photography that is slowly moving towards the consumption of things made without science, without having a starting point, only for the category of "wanna be" otherwise called Hipsters.
GM5, m4/3 enjoyable pancake 20mm f1.7 or even the kit zoom is more reasonable than this blackhole, promotion gadget
Just to add: it has an evf and an hot shoe in a smaller body.
Hold on to your cameras and keep your money. Control the gas 😂😂😂
No evf, no sale.
fun camera with pro price... too expensive
6:13 Hello. Great video. Can you apply a VND filter? Or does it has built in ND?
Too limitations to use.
F8? LOL
…def want to see your approach to insta-LUTS
I wish it had a viewfinder... 🥲
It's nice to see them trying something a bit different. I had a GX9, and an LX100ii for a while and absolutely loved both, personally for me, an update to either of those would have been more compelling.
I am preaching for a GX9ii, I think it would be the perfect general purpose camera. Gimme PDAF on a tiny body with good video features.
@@Renderprism I am preaching for a GX8II.
@@Renderprism I think a GX9ii would be awesome. What features would you want to see?
