  • He’s been described as Australia’s John Wayne Gacy, an opportunist killer, with unspeakable obsessions. Is this Australia’s worst child killer? We go inside the mind of Derek Percy and we ask the question, was he insane or evil?
Derek Percy was deemed too dangerous to be housed in a secure psychiatric facility, so he became the longest serving prison inmate in Australia’s history.

It's easy. Just erase modern day ideals and propogation of what constitutes as morally acceptable and civilized. We are animals by nature. The first humans had to be animalistic to survive. Today, we've evolved and learned how to not be from day one. We compartmentalize emotions and feelings. We know the difference between right and wrong and we view life as the most sacred of all. If you're a psychotic, you can use the same ingredients of compartmentalizing, but to the opposite effect. Turn off emotions and see others as nothing but objects for your pleasure. All that separates us from them is a thin veil of civility. Take that away and you've got an animal.

Yes. The father hiding evidence that could have prevented these murders reminds me of the case of murderer Ethan Crumbly who just got convicted after shooting up a school (11 victims, 4 died) in my home state of Michigan. Both of his parents not only knew about his deviant thought (from sketches, drawings, journals) but also bought him a gun less than a week before he committed the murders. Ethan had full access to it as it was never locked or secured in any way. His mother was just convicted of manslaughter for doing this and his father’s trial is coming up in June. This was a landmark decision in the US for parents being held responsible for a child’s crime. The shooter Ethan received life without the possibility of parole.

Insanity should not be on the cards as a "defense" ever; if a person is well enough to function in society and coherently diarize their desires before such heinous actions are perpetrated by them, they should face prosecution as normal.
Insane people are detectable in their behaviour and therefore destabalizing insanity will show up long before it becomes the crutch of an excuse to murder.
Families who hide mental issues that have spilled over into assault on others, are culpable to the later actions of that person.
Percy should have been incarcerated in a mental facility, not relocated to a town where he is unknown to hide his crime and give him a clean slate.

Yes, really enjoy watching Australian crime and how people react to it. I don't know what the standard is for insanity in Australia. In America, it is assumed that anyone who kills someone is probably crazy in some way unless it's self-defense. But the question is "Did the person know what he/she was doing?" In other words was their mind in this reality? A person who is in the Navy is obviously functioning at some level in this reality. The other question is, "Did they know what they were doing was wrong or illegal?" When a criminal tries to cover something up that is a clear indication that they knew they were doing something wrong or against the law. Getting out of a murder charge by pleading insanity is rarely successful in the USA.

The key is that in America, often the only accepted “insanity” defense is when a person commits the murder (usually) in a state of psychosis in which they are completely disconnected with the reality in which they are living/existing/acting and/or they (possibly also) do not know that the act they are committing is homicide (ie- an illegal crime and/or that it is a wrongful murder that would under law be the equivalent of homicide, in a way of speaking) like for example the sleepwalking murder or when someone is possibly under the extreme influence of psychotic behavior inducing substances like the bath salts guy murders (if you know what I’m taking about lol sorry not very accurately referenced there by my casual naming or description 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️). It seems that in Australia, it doesn’t rise to the level of complete detachment or unawareness of one’s actions as they are happening and the actual consequences in reality (ie- that they are actually committing a crime/a murder). Obviously, that’s just my observation based on this documentary, so the standard may have changed and been more modernized or specified since the time that these horrific murders occurred. 🤷🏻‍♀️⚖️

If they only see someone every six months it'd be comparatively easy to fake a desire for mental health, and the preparedness to work towards it.
I don't think, however, that it would have helped with this POS. Thank God, or the Graces, or the unusual good sense of psych experts and prison officials that he was never released.

Australian law must be different from US law, in regards to the collection of DNA. In the US, a warrant is needed to obtain a direct DNA sample, but no warrant or permission is necessary if the DNA is obtained from an item that has been discarded by the suspect. Given that Percy was incarcerated, it should have been exceedingly simply to obtain a sample from a discarded item.

Very interesting doc! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this guy, but I'm familiar w/ some of the unsolved cases mentioned… AU is like TX in a way- something makes it seem like the crimes/criminals that emerge can be alot more wild, crazy, creepy, unhinged, & screwed up than elsewhere… (or maybe it’s an illusion, as a Texan?)
Rather than purposefully playing into shock value & using labels, like how he’s the MOST monstrous & disgusting ever… or, how evil allll the details are, etc… I applaud how much of the program centered on the victims & their families’ commentary/interviews it also included a focus not only on the implications of Percy’s crimes & the fact he was caught- but “how?”. Acknowledging the boy that heroically stood up to that dirtbag & was responsible for his capture, as a victim… was poignant. I appreciate the way they sensitively navigated discussing the respect/honor he is due, lasting impacts the crime had on him, struggles he faced in life, & his depression/disappearance- focusing on his story was both touching & heartbreaking. U.S. crime docs/shows would have left his story on the cutting room floor- if anything, likely wouldn’t mention the most pitiful details; & since he was unfortunately dead, they NEVER would have used part of the budget to travel & also, film w/ a friend in his stead.
I prefer seeing/hearing all the crime facts- as horrid, fiendish, & depraved as they may be… I def. don’t support censoring or softening The Truth & reality of all that happened (nor avoiding use of photos & 911 calls, etc. simply bc they’re graphic or intense, thus not in “taste”) bc it acknowledges what the victims went through; but moreso, I like in depth analysis & more intellectual discourse/topics, especially how this show delved into the behavioral science aspects surrounding the criminal.
I also appreciate that each crime was covered SO thoroughly & how the various other cases he was potentially connected to, the theories behind them, & critical thinking processes utilized were all discussed… & in *such* detail; w/ LE clarifying their “final” assessment of his involvement, or not… rather than playing up the sensationalism & to make Percy into, or seem like, an even bigger monster or scarier bogeyman than he already was- which many, if not, most… true crime programs/shows & YT creators (especially) default into doing, generally.
That’s one of the reasons why this program really touched me so much- it recognized & focused on, all the pain, struggles, turmoil, damage, & the sheer amount of ppl that feel it, or are affected by it, when a crime as savage as those this POS committed, take place; as well as the special suffering that afflicts those that don’t have solid, reliable answers or any sense of closure about their loved one, which is why ppl hunt for it for so long. Moreover, it makes you question what justice is, and whether Percy is more contemptible for denying something so simple & easy, when he had nothing to lose? I also like that instead of ending w/ only a feeling of sadness… it offered a takeaway lesson about how things could have been different & perhaps, prevented… had his parents gotten him the help he VERY MUCH needed.
This was just SUCH a well made, in depth, compelling, interesting, heart wrenching, & poignant true crime doc. (AU makes a lot of “good” ones). Stay safe y’all!
    @australiancrime thanks for sharing

NO person who has a NORMAL PHYSIOLOGY does the things he did to children only those whose mind is severely damaged, carry out those acts. It is BLANTELY WELL KNOWN that he had a very damaged mind right from a very young age. Those who describe these people who show OBVIOUS signs of Physciopathy as being evil are poor simple idiots themselves, who want to keep humanity in the dark ages and as long as society listens to them, these HORRIFIC types of crimes will continue endlessly. Percy would have kept killing kids if he hadn't been either caught or released from Prison. The reason they never admit to their crimes is to do so would be a loss of power. People with psychopathy are INCREDIBLY SELFISH people.

Well as an American (actually Texan to be specific) I obviously think that any suggestion of a sentence like that is a crime in and of itself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aussies and Texans are so much alike in so many ways as far as I’ve happily noticed in my life and in other’s opinions like mine as well lol - EXCEPT for this one very glaring way. Criminal justice shouldn’t be something that anyone in a country with spiders the size of humans and the other most deadly other natural animal predators shouldn’t mess around about, because it turns out the most nightmarish evil predators are the inauspiciously non-eight-legged or inherently lethally venomous humans that are around us in society (and that shouldn’t ever be again, as soon as it is made clear as to what they truly are and the evil they are capable of…..) 🤮☠️
As Ron White so eloquently said: “I’m from Texas and if you kill somebody in Texas, we will kill you BACK. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That’s our policy.” Lolololol 🤷🏻‍♀️⚖️🇺🇸🌵. I highly recommend this policy to Australia especially for unimaginably evil cases like this sub-human excuse for a collection of evolutionary mistakes that was this nightmare personified!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
