  • BMW engine manufacturing at the BMW Brilliance Automotive plant in Shenyang.
The plant builds vehicles exclusively for the Chinese market. The Dadong plant in the northeast of the city opened in 2003 and currently produces the BMW 5 Series Long-Wheelbase Version. Going forward, this facility will also build the plug-in hybrid variant of the BMW 5 Series and the new BMW X3. The Tiexi plant in the west of Shenyang, which went on-stream in 2012, builds the BMW X1 Long-Wheelbase Version (including a plug-in hybrid variant), the BMW 1 Series Sedan, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the BMW 3 Series Long-Wheelbase Version and the BMW 3 Series Sedan. The engine plant, which opened in 2016, produces the latest generation of the BMW TwinPower Turbo three and four-cylinder petrol engines.

I’m always surprised that people don’t think before they talk or write. As our Chinese friends mentioned already, this factory produces engines for the Chinese market. Not for exports! Anyway. The factory looks really clean. As a car mechanic of old school, I’m happy to see actually people working and not only robots assemble the engines! Enjoy your BMW or as someone mentioned, “CMW” (I forgot the Province ‘s name what should be the first letter).

Well, that was interesting. Thank you for posting. Automobile production is one of the most studied industrial activities. Notice how clean and quiet everything was? Sometimes you move an engine with a six figure robot and sometimes you use a cart that wouldn't look out of place at Home Depot. Local production allows you to build to order, not build to forecast.

To make mould they use powdered sand and sawdust and glue and low heat to dry. They assemble the mold to form the engine design core. Spray to lower temperature and sticking. Then dip into pouring molten metal to form engine shape. Sometimes 10 on a dip to cut to units. Milking lathes to polish and fine cut and finished shape. One of the wonders of making almost complete automation with robots and visual x-ray defects check and tracking. Including pattern recognition and analysis. Zero waste and emissions.

Look at all those people working hard at all those good paying jobs! Look at all those forklift drivers. Look at all those skilled trade workers machining those parts to the thousands of an inch .. What a great world we have to look forward to. So much opportunity! Look at all those… Oh wait… Most of these processes are done by robots and monitored by engineers. Nevermind.

Excellent, thanks. Looks a very efficient production line, and good quality control.
The first few seconds show a fork truck loading Aluminium bars, and the truck was scuffed where a driver had hit things, later shots of the robotic trucks were pristine, they do not hit things.
Some eye protection would be good at some stages for the assembly workers, but overall, looks a very clean and quiet and efficient process.
Thanks for the video, I was impressed.

Cheap plastic parts all over and around the engine will cause parts to wear quickly, overheating on long or hard driving, parts are expensive and just overall nightmare to work on. The performance is legendary but the reliability is horrible, fun to drive not going to lie but don't buy one just lease it and if you did buy one get rid of it before the value depreciate or it hits 100,000 miles me personally would get rid of it at around 45k or 50k before something that cost 4k breaks which it will
