- I've been getting a TON of questions about picking out tattoo artists, so I wanted to make a video with all of my best tips and secrets on how I find the perfect tattoo artist match for me. I wish I could have answered all of your messages, but this is honestly far better than any specific answer I could have given.
YES, it's a long video, but it's packed full of my life long tattoo experience, and I didn't want to leave anything out! So let me know what you think, and if I left anything out.
I feel like this video is perfect for first timers and tattooed people alike!

Honestly, the way you talk is what got me to subscribe in the first place, despite how weird it sounds. Because I was so used to these strong, bold, "performance" videos, your slow, relaxed videos were so comfortable. And I like that they're kind of long, I can give myself a treat at the end of my day. (:
QiQiBlue22 Thank you! I really needed this comment, thanks for the reassurance.
I love how you talk and don't mind the length. It feels so personal. Like I'm getting advice from a friend.
you have such a good way of talking, although it's slow it makes it seem much more conversational and interesting. fuck da haters.
NEVER CHANGE your video's, love love love your style... Stay True to You
I love your long videos - for some reason I could just watch them for ages! Love your hair by the way x
Thank you for taking the time to make these conversational videos they really help please don't change you!
I always find that artists who seem enthusiastic from the get-go when you start emailing make me at ease...and there are so many great tattoo artists you can find if you search well enough, then it is easier to settle on a design and let go of your apprehensions or your fears.
This video really helped me narrow down my list of artists that I went to check out a few days ago. The last guy I went to was sort of cocky and rude and was sort of bashing other shops and artists in the area. I didn't get to meet the second girl that was recommended but one of the other artists in the shop told me to check her out. The first guy I went to was super excited very open to all my ideas and I looked at his work on Insta and I decided he was the one! Thank you so much for your words of wisdom
I actually really like the conversational aspect of your videos. A lot of you tubers will cut out every second where they take a breath or pause and it make the videos very "skippy" I guess you could say !
Getting my first tattoo 3 weeks from now and I'm freaking out :D This video really helped me realize I've picked a really great tattoo artist and there's no need to worry :)
I found your channel a few days ago, and Im already hooked! haha I love that you post a lot of videos about tattoos
Wow, you mentioned East River! I plan on getting my first tattoo from Sue! That's so neat.
Yeah this is 100% so right. I'm traveling this month up to SF from LA for an artist who is coming from the east coast. I'm also talking to an artist in Canada. It gives your tattoo a story! Plus it means you get the work you want!
This was some solid advice!
oh my goshh thank you so much for this video, i'm almost 19 and hoping to get my first tattoo very soon and this video was so so helpful in helping me solidify my artist and design!!! thank you!!!
how long did it take you to decide what tattoo style you wanted/liked? and what would you describe yours was?
Thanks for this - i went back at searched through right to the start of a tattoo artist ive been look at's instagram. Made me feel more confident in my choice!
Also abit late to the party but I love your relaxed conversational lack of jump cuts style to :)
I don't agree with all of the points you raised in this video, but I hadn't thought of many of them before, so thank-you for raising them, it's helped me solidify how I'm going to choose a tattoo artist for myself
Yessss. Its so hard to find Philly people. I'm going to start my channel. I understood the struggle soon as I heard the construction
Just found your channel, loving it :)
Thank you so much for this video! It helped a lot!
Woah Tampa, FL lol my city isn't like "famous" so I was pretty excited to hear you say it lol
Really appreciate this advice because I felt quite limited to the local shops when getting my tattoos and I like them both but I don't have great experiences of actually getting my tattoos done and chilling with the artist etc so even though I love my tattoos there's no like story behind them and I kinda think aw it's a shame getting them done was kind of a bummer and quite impersonal because there was no back and forth no consultation, hell I didn't even meet the artists before getting them done!. I only have two at the moment but I'm moving to a new city next month so hopefully I can find some new artists that I gel with to work on some cool new pieces! Thanks QCK you're definitely a cool babe x
This is my favorite video of yours. One thing I think is important to mention, it's great to look for artists on social media, but unless they specifically say to, don't try to make appointments over Instagram or Facebook. Most artists require a deposit and want to make the appt in person anyway. Just a thought.
this video is so so helpful! :)
thankya
I actually love that you talk slow, sometimes when I watch other youtubers they're talking a million words a second and it's overwhelming.
I've had an idea for a tattoo for a few years, I am kinda terrified of finding an artist because I just don't know where to begin. I only have 3 minor tattoos now and they were all walk ins :( I want this to be my first big piece, it's really special to me. Thanks for the video.
I really love your sense of style, you should do some outfit of the day videos :) xx
I love how long your videos are :)
Your vids are perfect
I was wondering if maybe you could do an updated video about this topic? I've tried using Instagram and I've looked online, but I cant quite find an artist near me that is proficient in the style of tattoo that I want. I'm getting pretty frustrated and am hoping for some guidance or advice. Other than that I want to say I love your videos and especially appreciate tattoo talk Tuesdays! Thank you for all of your hard work!
I love your tattoo style! And was wonder if you new of any tattoo artists that you liked or would get tattooed by in New Jersey? Love you and all your beautiful tattoos!
Hi Qcknd! I just moved to philly and I’m so glad I found your channel this week. You mentioned in this video one of your favorite artists is a morrissey fan. I’m a huge morrissey fan and am looking for an artist to do a special piece for me. Who is the artist you mentioned?
Thanks! I love your videos.
please don't make your videos shorter because some people complained. I love conversational manner & how long they are! You just have an awesome personality and I love listening to you talk
I was wondering what that artist was you were talking about in Montreal? I live in Ottawa and I'm starting to research other artists around me. And i love your traditional style!
Thank you for the conversation!
Thanks for all those videos you make talking about tattoos and their process, I needes that.
I have a question: how can I describe exactly what I want and how I want the tattoo? The style, the details and all of that stuff. Sorry for my english :S
Love your videos
I've been a follower of yours for a little while now, I love your videos Qcknd! :)
I had a question though about tattoo appointments/artists. What do you do when you LOVE LOVE LOVE an artists work, but they aren't near you? I have found some artists that make my heart sing, but they either live multiple states away or don't even live in the same country. Any recommendations or tricks to find similar artists or ways to make appointments work? Thanks!
great video! super weird though my mother was just telling me she saw a girl on the bus with a uppercase K and then I litterally just played that part of the video like a minute later, freaky haha.
I noticed that you said you live in Philly *and* that you found a tattoo artist who is pretty good at doing script/word tattoos. I am also in the Philadelphia and looking for artists who specialize in word tattoos. Who is the guy you went/go to?
i love the music in the background, does anyone know what it is?
I find your voice really relaxing. (Not trying to be creepy lol)
hi! brand new on your channell!
One tattoo question: how do you book an appointment for tattoo conventions?!
thank you very much!!!
XO Feddy
Do you have any recommendations for blending 2 different artist work together? I had someone who’s local for me do a upper arm tattoo on me but I also have some forearm tattoos and was planning on filling in a biggish gap with a tiger by the more local tattoo artist because my mom doesn’t want to drive too far even though I want too, I don’t drive and also she is the one paying. I like both of the artists work. But there different. And I just don’t know what to do to blend my arm together more I’m nervous the tiger I will do, won’t blend with the other tattoo artist work. Any help or suggestions? :) Thanku so much!!!
Do you have any recommendations on artists who do feminine tattoos well? I can reach the Pittsburg, Philly, Virginia/Richmond, and New York areas. :)
what tattoo shop do you go to in philly? I visit yearly and was looking for shops in and around that area :)
since you went to school in philly, do you have any recommendations for artists in philly?
Hi there, what was the name of the artist you mentioned who travels a fair bit around the States?
tip for anyone complaining that she talks slow: just watch it with the speed at 1.5
I do this mainly because I'm pretty busy and it makes the videos go by a bit faster but I dont miss out on anything.
I found my favorite artist and I am going to NYC anyways, so I contacted the shop about an appointment and apparently my artist charges $500 an hour... Thats insane right? And I had to go into a consultation for a quote on how long it will take. Should I still pursue it if the tattoo is something I really want or should I find someone else. Im afraid that no one else will be able to execute the same style and detail as him though.
HELLO! very helpful video :) quick question: do you have any suggestions of tattoo artists in nyc? maybe I am just a failure on the internet, but I am still really struggling to find someone i love. im planning on getting a realistic lizard tattoo, probably black and white-- thank you if you see this :D :D
You should check out Uncl Paul. He's really good!
Thanks for this. I have 5-ish small tattoos and have many more ideas. I do follow several artists on Instagram.
Hey, completely not related to the video, but I was wondering about the placement for my first tattoo. People usually say that don't get your first tattoo on your neck/hands/other highly visible place and to get it somewhere where it could be easily hidden. Is shoulder an ok first tattoo placement? I figured as a person who has had some experience with tattoos you could maybe help me out.
Katriin Kulevits Get it somewhere that can easily be covered with conventional clothing. As someone with a nearly suited upper body, I can still stay stigma free because I don't have any that are visible in my work attire.
great video, helpful infos!
(just the background music played over and over kind off annoys me because I can't concentrate on you talking but that's my opinion)
Do you know any good artists in Milwaukee or around in Wisconsin? I hope you do LOL I have a more "organic shapes" Style and not so many straight lined shapes?
I'm still having trouble ...I was wondering if you would help me find an artist, if you don't want to you don't have to. I understand it could get annoying.
hopefully you can help me with this! Im an artist. I want my own art tattooed on me. I was playing around with the idea of actually collaborating with a tattoo artist, because I understand they too are an artist and feel that this could be a really neat experience and amazing piece of art that will just bring me back to my own evolution in art. what do you think about this? and how do i find an artist for this kind of situation? D: I've been playing with this idea for 3 years and looking for San Diego artists, but maybe i am being to picky...
I would ask around, find artists you like, and just generally talk to other artists. Let me know how it works/worked out.
i just got my tattoos yesterday! and i grew out of the ides of having my own art on me. i felt like that was never going to be how i wanted it, so i collaborated with my artist on an idea. I'm a downhill skateboarder and she captured a mountain and scenery on my back with a windy road coming down the mountain. I'm in love. we also did a hermit crab on my forearm near my wrist. really happy i decided to go this path instead
Zoey Vagner That sounds amazing! I'm so happy for you and your tatoos sound amazing!
awe thank you! I'm so happy too! its been a rough month, i had broken my leg and I'm in my cast for 2 more weeks. since I'm not skating or surfing for a bit i thought this would be the most perfect time to relax and heal. :]
+Zoey Vagner (Zoey Vagner) aw, well I hope your leg feels better!
hey just curious who the artist in Montreal is. I live here and am always looking for new good artists.
Justin Phass Jessie Preston I'm pretty sure
Sophia Nahon thanks!
I've done a few vlogs before. I would recommend to just edit the video to cut out the seconds in which you don't say anything to give the video the illusion of going faster. I wouldn't adjust your mannerisms or try to speak faster since that is part of your personality and you don't want to change that.
Who is this tattoo artist from Montreal you're talking about ? :)
Jessi Preston! :)
Thank you !
eres hermosa :)
What's your instagram? :) Love your videos!
What lipstick are you wearing?
Abu Dhabi by Nyx!
Hey, I'm only 14, that being said, I would like to begin my research on tattoo artists and would like to start thinking about/designing my first tattoo. I know that 90% of the people that see this comment will think "OH, YOU'RE TOO YOUNG TO EVEN THINK ABOUT GETTING A TATTOO KID, HOW BOUT YOU GROW UP AND FINISH SCHOOL BEFORE YOU THINK ABOUT GETTING ONE" and I think that they are entitled to their opinion, and if they don't like my decision, then they can just ignore me. Anyway, I would like to know if you or anyone that reads this comment can recommend any tattoo artists that are not only willing to help a young mind find their first tattoo, but are willing to plan for a long time. I would like to have a tattoo artist that specializes in "bland" or colorless tattoos so black and white, possibly a different sort of spin on tribals, by no means tribals themselves, just something of the same style and technique. Someone that does a lot of work on the upper arm, like a half sleeve, or on the upper chest. And I would really enjoy making a tattoo that I can truly call my own, that I have put large amounts of time into planning and designing. I have always admired tattoos and whenever I see a tattoo that I like lately I generally ask where they got it and what would they recommend to someone who wants their first tattoo to really mean something to them. If someone took the time to read this far, I thank you, and ask if you can relate to my situation or can recommend a tattoo shop/artist, I don't care what state or country they live in, I can travel to them by the time I want my tattoo done. Thanks for your time.
xXdaffyRAGEXx I was like you! I planned my tattoos from 14 yrs old, and started saving, planning, researching, and designing. being tattooed is a huge commitment and I really recommend you put a lot of thought into the work you want done. if you want black and white or colourless tattoo start researching tattoo artists that specialise in that style in your country. social media is fantastic for that, or even Google.
I live in England and I know if I want something unique or very brightly coloured I can go to an amazing guy called Chris Hatch who used to work at an amazing place in London and has now moved but I plan on going back to him in the future.
not sure if this was helpful but please just make sure you put in the thought, start researching now, and listen to your gut...it knows what it wants lol.
Hi! Have you thought about - Kezneks Impressive Tattoos Pop (do a search on google)? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my co-worker makes some excellent tattoo designs and some easy money on the side from it.
You just have like an american drawl(which is very endearing and forgein, ireland calling), and I'd rather that than having to rewind and repeat, and much better than say, frequent jump cuts you know?
