We are now officially nine months in to the biggest and most ambitious historic home restoration we've undertaken. This project is monumental, and to us, it seems to be creeping along. Most days we look at the house and feel like nothing has happened, so it's good for us to take you on this walk down memory lane to see just how much we really have achieved in a relatively short period of time.
We bought the home officially in July, 2023 after it suffered a major fire in March of 2023. It took months of planning just to get work started, because the first thing we had to do was take the remainder of the roof off without the rest of the structure falling in: that isn't something you do quickly or rashly. Then, the REAL work began! You can see in this video what we were left with, and how far we've come!
This home is pushing 300 years old. It was built before Mississippi was a state, while it was a Spanish territory. This land has had Europeans on it since 1723 when a French naturalist named L Page married an indigenous Natchez woman, and has seen French, Spanish, British and finally American ownership. This building is an amazing part of our American history, and so worth saving. We hope you'll watch this series and see that there really is no such thing as a tear down, no home is ever "too far gone", and begin to understand that our nations built environment holds the story of us all.

Don’t know about anyone else, but I’m in for the long haul. It is fascinating how difficult this has been. History isn’t cheap nor is it easy, but it’s worth it in the long run. You truly have a treasure in the gentleman doing your carpentry. True masters are rare. Keep up the good work. I’m excited to see each milestone. ☺️

I totally agree with you. I hope and pray others will continue their passion and keep these older homes alive and livable for future generations. It is heart breaking to see so many torn down and new construction being built. The materials, designs and carpentry will be lost and destroyed forever. This is a sad and tragic thought. Thank you for your passion. ❤❤❤😊

When 40 minutes feel like 15. You never have to question if this or that decision is the best because these two probably make more historically accurate decisions than I would. I mean. THIS is where I’ve learned so much about historic homes that I never even thought to find out about on my own.
“Buy A NEW House” should be a T-shirt, juxtaposing a beautiful old Queen Anne Victorian beside a sad McMansion.
Restoration brings me lyfe!! So rejuvenating and inspiring and rebuildings like this show that anything is possible.

The physical size of this project would take 2 people 20 years. The spot in my 1880 house that drives me crazy is the floor where I'm sitting right now. My roller chair heads east all the time. Every minute of the day I'm repositioning my chair.

Having lived in a 100 plus year old house & my parents after retirement owning a farmhouse over 100 years old both with rock solid foundations I can attest to floors not level & walls not plumb. My parents kitchen the first time I stood on it felt like I was leaning down hill. I empathize with your struggles. A house of that age & size must be a nightmare at times. You have made so much progress The end result will be absolutely stunning. I can't wait to see it finished. I know there is still a long way to go but I will be here until the finish❤

Kevin and Laine, I so needed to see this today! I am months into renovations that seem overwhelming. So much work has gone into things no one will see when finished. Having someone like your John has been a lifesaver! At several points, I've looked at the chaos and wondered if there will ever be a finish line. Decor seems like a chore after you've had to repair and rebuild from studs. Seeing your video has encouraged me to keep going. Thank you!

💖 I can’t believe how bad “Hope Farm” was just 1 year ago. It would have been so easy to just bulldoze the entire House and start over. But to loose all that history would have been absolutely devastating to say the least. My heart pounds with utter joy seeing “Hope” come back to life exactly the way she should be.
Thank you Laine & Kevin for having the dedication and passion in bringing “Hope Farm” back to life. 🌷💖🌷

While I understand how overwhelming such a commitment to this house can be, it’s hugely inspiring that you all had the guts to take this on! It’s your attention to every detail that’s making this house a successful authentic restoration. You stepped up to the plate where it appeared no one else would. We stayed at Hope Farm when Mrs. Ethel operated it as a B&B during fall pilgrimage one year. It was a beautiful home, and she was a lovely hostess who shared the love she had for Natchez and Hope Farm with us. We have been in dozens of historic homes throughout the south, and none have had the same impact on me the Hope Farm did. It is heartbreaking to know what was lost, but I'm so glad to see it being restored.

You have a treasure in this artist of woodworking. I too have been blessed with a husband who is a master at many things including carpentry. As we finish the 6 years we have been building our dream home, I look around and know there is not another home anywhere like ours. The same is true of Hope. May she stand tall and proud for another 500 yrs. I will have to come and see this beauty when she is finished. Great job !

Humid here in So Cal too; it's August! The change is so major, with the roof (OMG, what a pain over the hip roof thing!), the siding, and the gallery. I too hate heights, and was nervous whenever I saw someone on that upper gallery with no railings. Yikes! Many years ago, while shopping for our first historic home (1920s-1930s Era), a Home Inspector told us he could place a marble at one side of a room and it would roll all the way to the other side. San Diego had no uniform building code at that time, and many were kit homes. But when you go back before 1800, you are on a completely different level. (Ha!) Always glad to see what you are doing!! Your carpenter is a prize indeed!

Omgooodness‼️‼️‼️. Y’all HAVE done so much in really a very short time‼️. I am amazed at the work details that is going into Hope. I remember taking a tour years ago…and walking under your “ L” shape. And it was hot and muggy😂 I too live in a 107 year old home & know how uneven the floors are… they have slightly pulled away from the walls… And being a hairdresser , I know that sometimes I have to cut hair uneven to make it visually look even. So I get it😉 As always I enjoy your updates & TY for bringing us along as you restore Hope back to her grandeur ♥️

Kevin and Laine. It is absolutely a testiment to your love of history and tenacity to restore what most would have written off for lost! Thank you for saving a piece of the past, for us to enjoy in the future. You both are an inspiration, and I continueously enjoy tagging along on your restoration and history appreciation journey. Thank you for sharing. ❤

So wonderful to see so much progress. So happy that you are saving Hope Farm. Will you be able to salvage any of the beautiful Duncan Phyfe furniture in the parlor?

It was taken out of the house as soon as possible and will be loaned back to us. We haven’t seen its condition yet but we’re very hopeful.

It is nice to finally really see progress. Though I know lots of work happened before this, it wasn't as visually noticable.
But next we must to see the cottage.
