Sweet Lou Whitaker with a perfect bunt in old Tiger Stadium, June 1988

  • Go ahead.
Just you try and tell me this isn't asthetically pleasing baseball.
Ole Tiger Stadium's long infield grass had a part to play in Sweet Lou's tactical bat-control, no doubt. Indeed, there is an argument to be made about letting Lou swing away, considering all the extra base potential he was capable of providing Sparky's side; there's a Retrosheets breakdown that gives us an era's probability of runs scored based on runners-on and outs recorded (just gotta find it). But in terms of the fun part of ball to be enjoyed, where running quickly makes everybody in attendance or watching from home sit on the edge of their seat for a second or two, man, I just love everything about this scene.
MLB in 2022 is being played differently than the last couple of seasons, where an elevated launch angle and swinging from the heels was the singular solution to shifts and a pitcher's spin/stuff/velo. With the Tigers, Jays, Yanks, and a host of other teams employing baserunnning daring to find a competitive edge as a less tightly wound baseball doesn't soar like it used to, adventure on the bases isn't quite as quantified into the history books as it was even just last season. How could you not thrill to that return to fun baseball formerly enjoyed in the 70s, 80s, and 90s? How could you not smile watching grainy video of Sweet Lou bunting for a hit and listening to a Saturday Detroit crowd get all excited about the ploy?
From the shadows that the old stadium would cast in the latter afternoon to those short-sleeved collared dress shirts that the ushers would amuse with, Jesus, it's all so pretty. Athletic Kelly Gruber checkmated into hanging back, instead of charging when the Tiger's second baseman squared, is just another footnote that drips of nostalgia. Of course 36 year-old Ernie Whitt wasn't going to be able to pounce and fire quickly enough to nab Lou. Of course a basesloaded quagmire would result when the bunted ball got stuck in that lush green that differentiated baseball in Detroit compared to 80s' Astroturf commonality.
    Gawd, it's all so pretty.

Hey, All. So this vid took off 21 days after it was initially posted, and I'm just wondering why. Where did you happen to run into it? The analytics says it's the 45 to 64 year-old demo that has mostly been watching. That's not surprising, as I guess one had to watch Lou's era to get a wee misty about the player, team, and stadium. But the same analytics also say that this vid is being found mostly by RUclips search function. I find it hard to believe that peeps are searching for Lou Whitaker all these years later (especially his bunts), but, well, so be it. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed it. Man, those deep shadows at ole Tiger Stadium really brings back memories, eh?

      @@DonTrump-sv1si Are you kidding?
1978 AL Rookie of the Year, 5 straight AL All Star appearances, 4 silver sluggers, 3 Gold Gloves and was 8th in AL MVP voting in 1983 (as a so called light hitting 2nd baseman). He had a 75.1 WAR which ties him with Johnny Bench for 82nd place in MLB history. His stats puts him 7th when compared against the 20 2nd basemen already in the HOF. He and Alan Trammell were the best double play combo in MLB history.

@@davegiddings2545 I know thats sounds good, and it is good. But thats the problem too, in that it is good, not great. .276 avg (lifetime) 2300 hits. Only had one 200 hit season and only 5 over 150 hits. Only 244 HRs. Only one time playing in a full season did Whitaker hit over .300. ONCE!
Like I said above hes a really good player that id love on my team any day, but hes just not great; hes not quite HOF material

@@DonTrump-sv1si You have to compare people to others at their position. As I stated, he is 7th in stats compared against the 20 2nd baseman already in the HOF. You can’t say his stats aren’t good enough.
You mention HRs for example. Only two 2nd basemen have more than 300 homers all time. Sweet Lou is 10th in all time HRs for 2nd baseman. You have to compare people to their peers at their position.

A properly placed bunt can be as crucial to the outcome of a game as a triple off of the outfield wall!
