McMurtry Spéirling: is this 1,000bhp baby EV Batmobile the future? | Top Gear

  • It may look like Kinder’s started popping toy Batmobiles in its eggs, but this dinky device apparently beats a Chiron to 186mph - with turbines in place of a rear wing. The stats on the prototype are promising, and daft - think around 1,000kg, and around 1,000 electrically powered horses to move it. What’s even more promising (and perhaps equally as daft) is there’s a one-make series of these being touted. We’re sold. Adorable madness.
    There’s plenty to scramble your brain and get your head around, so allow Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Kew to walk you around this weird and wacky thing. And apologies for the sound. The person in charge of that is now on tea-making duties. Forever.

      Batmobiles are only as ugly or as gorgeous as the vision of the people who drew the comic strip or crafted the movies. I have to admit, when I first saw the car on the Festival of Speed hill, I immediately thought of a Batmobile. Not only because of the fins and swept-back shape, but also because the McMurtry at speed reminded me of footage of the 60s Adam West Batmobile, which was artificially "sped up" to look faster on TV than it actually was.

      @@evolicious This is a very long comment but I hope you read it.
      The fastest cars I've ever been in are the Golf 7 R and the Leon Cupra 300, the Golf is especially terrifying because of the AWD, when I accelerated I couldn't believe it! It was a brutal, painful acceleration, all I was thinking was " How on earth can a car do this?!" it exceeded all my expectations. And the leon was impressive at high speed accelerations and all that in a luxurious quiet interior with tons of tech. I then drove a rally car in the 1.6 liter class with about 150hp ( half the hp of the previous two cars) and it was FWD with only a 5 speed manual gearbox. no TC, no ABS, no ESC, no airbags, no cupholders, no upholstery, no seats excpet for the driver's seat, no dashboard, no door cards, NOTHING, it's just you, the engine, the transmission and that 8000rpm redline, I really can't put into words how fun it was, it sounded furious, you could feel everything, you operate the car based on your feelings and reflexes, it was as if the car was just an extension of my body. Sure those fancy German cars would smoke that little rally car in a straight line, but it's not about what the car does it's about how it does it and how it makes you feel while you're doing it. To put it simply, it's the only thing in the world that made cry of joy, and changed my perception completely, all I care about now is the drive, and I pitty everyone who hasn't experienced a raw mechanical beast like I have. EVs to me are just huge tech devices on wheels, it can have a million horsepower but if the car is doing everything for you waht's the point?
      This is what it is to be a car enthusiast, someone who can develop an emotional connection with the car, and that's something that you just can't do with an EV.

    It's the fastest Vacuum Cleaner known to man.
    Looks amazing, I bet this hairdryer of a car will set new trends for record setting designs. It's not only lightweight, but it's simply... just... small. A lot of power in a tiny package. Amazing. I also love the focus on a single driver. It's one of the reasons I love the BAC Mono - it's small and wraps around you; man melding with machine. This car is the same... and it also doubles as a leaf blower.

    Big thumbs up for the display at the hillclimb! The downforce fans being active from a standstill should provide more grip at launch and improve the feeling of sudden acceleration, but also for practicality I'm sure it can also be a very eccentric way of blowing leaves off from any road or pathway, so a big hat tip for that!

      That would be the natural progression. If all cars in the near future will be electric it would make sense for F1 cars to also be electric, and with other technology progressing, the chassis and aero will benefit making the newer cars faster. The only thing I still see ICE doing for F1 is very high power output for a whole race distance, seeing how EVs are improving though I think we could see electric F1 cars sooner than most would think.

      @@thisnameistoolong9169 they have exclusivity until 2039 but F1 can get (purchase) permission to go electric before that. I honestly believe that's their smallest hurdle because you can just throw money at it. Being able to get the performance and range they would want is still an issue and I'm sure F1 is also taking into consideration what they feel fans and the majority of the manufacturers want.

      @@lumntoob999 that's also possible, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. V10s and V12s are never coming back so we might as well dive straight into the electric stuff.

    • @lumntoob999
      @lumntoob999 2 года назад

      @@thisnameistoolong9169 I agree, I obviously loved the sound of the V10 and V12 engines but I wouldn't have wanted to go back to them once I saw the performance and potential of the turbo hybrid cars, although a V10 hybrid would of been cool as well. I'm excited about the performance of electric drivetrains but I am definitely a bit worried about how long it will take to have the range/capacity to supply F1 cars with the crazy amount of power output they need. You watch F1 I'm guessing so you know how much power the chassis and tires can handle and how much of the lap they take at full throttle, it does seem like a daunting task to replicate that for a race distance. Like you said we will have to give it time to see what will actually happen.
