One of the best renditions of this beautiful piece by Purcell. If there were ever two voices made to sing this melodic, light lyrical gem it has to be James Bowman and Michael Chance. Simply superb!
When I heard of James Bowman's death I felt it as a personal gut-wrenching bereavement. Since his first LP, borrowed from the local library, I was hooked. He is one of the very rare (in fact I know of no other) singers who is as captivating to watch as to hear - a real communicator . He must have been a delight to work with, so aware of & generous to other performers. His voice & Michel Chance's blend perfectly. Let's not forget that Michael too was/is one of the major treasures of our Early music Revival.
This was actually composed as a song, not as a trumpet duet. Be interesting to hear it as a trumpet duet - if that's possible - or played by 2 'spritely oboes/ 'hautbois'
I feel like they got on stage to record this and did this all in 1 take. It just feels effortless and it looks like they're so comfortable with each other. Love it!
There is just one very brief moment at 1.59 when, for what I think is just the one note, we hear Bowman's Baritone - and what a rich tone he makes with it. Then the moment passes, and on they go to the end. Excellent.
The really best interpretation of „sound the trumpet“ I‘ve ever ever heard. Absolutely marvellous !!! It‘s a big joy to see and feel the interaction and harmony between the two beautiful voices. I‘am just listening to these miracle voices over 100 times and I cannot geht enough. Come to Munich/Germany for a concert, please ! Regine
i dont mean to be off topic but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I was stupid forgot the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Alijah Kairo I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
This must be the most exuberant, skilful and moving version of Purcell's celebration of rationalism (...that skilful numbers can employ) - after the ending of the 30 and 80 years wars, heralding a new era. Love the interaction between the two gents; for some very brief moments checking each other while the other is not looking back
Good evening здравствуйте очень хорошая песня мне очень понравилось большое спасибо за музыкальное видео всего вам самого доброго thanks very much goodbye
Sound the trumpet, sound the trumpet, sound the trumpet! Sound, sound, sound the trumpet till around You make the list'ning shores rebound. On the sprightly hautboy play All the instruments of joy That skillful numbers can employ, To celebrate the glories of this day.
This is one of my favorite duet works. I have sung it occasionally. The countertenors were delightful however,in my opinion, the trip was faster than I like.
I had the pleasure of singing this -- and the rest of "Come, ye Sons of Art" -- in Norwich a trifle of 26 years ago, with a female contralto as the other soloist. That particular group I performed with on several occasions as bass, baritone, tenor and countertenor soloist; but in all honest, these two dudes are better than I am. :D
The rest of the comments are so great, it only remains to add...yes, hautboy , just like they sang, is like Oat Boy, to rhyme with joy, not modernised to oboe.
Very enjoyable version of this tune thanks to the marvellous countertenors, I enjoy this version better than the Deller one, although this type of chant owes a lot to Alfred Deller

One of the best songs ever. It must have been a big hit on the charts in the 17th century.
Oh my Goodness, awesome duet, Chance and Bowman for everlasting.
R.I.P. James, the finest countertenor of your generation and inspiration to those that followed.
RIP James Bowman, a wonderful singer

this lively two trumpet purcell composition adapted for two singers is really charming

plot twist ... it took them 79 takes!
Seriously, it's obvious it's one take
Cannot stop listening to this performance...the ease with which they achieve perfection..divine
It is VERY rare that I ever listen to anything twice in a row, but I just couldn't let this pass with just one hearing. Outstanding.
I never tire of hearing this wonderful rendition - thank you Michael Chance and James Bowman
The art of the counter tenor provided by two World Class exponents.
Thanks to these gents peforming the words not turning themselves into competing hooting sopranists in competition. GOATS
one of the most impressive musicians I have ever met, a wonderful man, it was a pleasure to know him.
Simply the best, effortless and the clarity..so little of the two available on youtube

From a technical point of view these gentlemen are on elite level. What a performance! Such a loss... R.I.P
Perfect absolutely... restraint, respect for the composer, and incredible singing...
Wonderful!!! I can’t tire of them! ❤
Adieu, James Bowman. Et merci...
They sing so effortlessly
The first thought that popped into my mind was 'when kings sing' 🥰
thankyou so much for sharing this.

@Alijah Kairo it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass!
They make it look so effortlessly elegant, like they decided to recite this after a few pints at the pub.
My favorite rendition for many many years. Stunning!
Würde Purcell selbst das hören können, er würde vom Stuhl aufspringen um die Beiden zu umarmen!
Was für ein Gesang! Gesang für und vom Himmel!
Best rendition of this I have ever heard: beautiful muscicality and diction.
So glad this version is available again.

Good evening здравствуйте очень хорошая песня мне очень понравилось большое спасибо за музыкальное видео всего вам самого доброго thanks very much goodbye
Extraordinary musical performance from a to z, what else?
What else? May I say (with greatest respect & affection) I think Bowman looks here like an ever so slightly debauched angel.
Rest in peace James Bowman, an historical countertenor of Hændel’s revival
Outstanding!BRAVO
La mejor interpretacion. Sois unicos
Los mejores exponentes en el registro contratenor.
Los Dioses hablan en sus trinos.
Sound the trumpet, sound the trumpet, sound the trumpet!
Sound, sound, sound the trumpet till around
You make the list'ning shores rebound.
On the sprightly hautboy play
All the instruments of joy
That skillful numbers can employ,
To celebrate the glories of this day.
Brillantissime!
Awesome manly performance!
Esta es la mejor interpretacion entre muchas que he escuchado.
Bravissimi. Fantastic performance!!
Fabulous!
RIP James. Will sing for you

Honesty & admiring makes you a better performer! 👌
And seeing James' Bowman at the beautiful little King of Hearts venue in Norwich around that time was was incredible
Maravilloso!!!
Mítica versión, Bowman y Chance me enseñaron a amar la voz de contratenor.
Perfecto !!!
Yes!
The rest of the comments are so great, it only remains to add...yes, hautboy , just like they sang, is like Oat Boy, to rhyme with joy, not modernised to oboe.
I was taught as oboe
Classic.

+ peter Chant?
Io la canto da Baritono...Da Falsettista ci riesco poco 😁😁 Saluti da Lecce Barocca 👋 😊😉👑🎼🎶🎹🎹🎺🎺🎺❤
What is Chance wearing??
Why there is no trumpet in this music?
Boys if you wanna sing like this you know what you have to do...
B R A V İ İ İ …..S U P E R G A ….
A truly wonderful performance by both artists. However, I cannot quite live with the 'sprightly OAT-BOY' It seems to jar somehow.
Hautboy of course. A wind instrument of the period as you know.It was pronounced Oboy .
😂 ok hautboi
Brillantissime!
Maravilloso!
