Andreas Scholl has an amazing counter tenor voice that is impeccable, with such range and colour to his voice. I listen to this every night, thank you for the gift of your voice to the world.
That note at 2:23 is heavenly, and here Scholl really makes the difference with other interpretations as he uses no vibrato and finishes the note early and very neatly, thus giving the impressions he is breathless at the end of this note which brings the emotion to its fullest. Probably the best version of this piece.
It struck me, and was almost jarring at first. I wanted it to go on.....indefinitely, haha. But as I have listened to it again, I think it was a master stroke. It accents the entire rest of the piece, and brings it to a new level. Outstanding. This man can't make a bad recording.
I consider this performance a masterpiece for the following reason: The short and clean note without vibrato (2:28) makes it seem like he’s breathless and brings a very emotional character to the end of the piece.
The main thing is it being short, at least for me. Notice how the strings sound very clean. Vibrato was only carefully used in the baroque period, unfortunately many who interpret the pieces don't pay attention to that.
Ironic that it was likely a mistake, based on his reaction afterwards... But, that's WHY this piece is notable. Thousands sing it perfectly, but add some originality and you stand out from the rest.
I don't have any way of knowing how true it is, because prior to recording, it is not possible to verify just how music sounded, but I have heard a plausible theory that vibrato only came into prominent use because early recording techniques had a lot of pitch variation, and it was a way of making it less distracting

Andreas Scholl, your voice is arguably the greatest countertenor voice to have ever graced human kind. When you open your mouth to start "Ombra Mai fu" the stillness, control and effortless build is something to be remembered in history books! When I auditioned for multiple European Cathedral positions this was my piece. Pure inspiration. And for those of you out there who do not recognize the beauty of and difficulty of the counter tenor voice, it is a treasure and rare. It takes a real man to sing like this!!!
@Florian 2 I do not like countertenor voices in general. In this case, I feel something strange while listening to him, it sounds really ambiguous and weird. I don't like this singer at all. Rather listen to opera, with another range of voices.
I have repeated this song at least 100 times in one day. This is divine grace.....He has perfect control of his beautiful voice I'm in love with his Ombra mai fu
Nine years ago, Mr. Scholl performed a recital on the UC Berkeley campus. Cal Performances made the mistake of booking him in the huge Zellerbach Hall. As a result, there was a large no. of unsold seats so at the last minute, they made tix available at no charge! I sat in the 5th row and saw Mr. Scholl sing six gorgeous Handel arias, including this aria and my favorite from Saul, "O Lord whose mercies numberless". It was the best bargain of my life!
If you have any sort of romantic streak in your heart this song will move you and move you repeatedly. Many people I've met are too closed off to their emotions to get to the heart of this music. It's the the purest expression of love I've heard. A modern song that convey the same feeling to me is In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.
"why anyone would hate on this is beyond me", The world abounds in misery, which, having given up, wants only to cloak everything in darkness. To no avail. This performance, these performers, their instruments, and all such human-created beauty and effort call us all to reach for more than what we are today. Joy will always triumph.
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, bravíssimo!!!! La piu bella interpretazione que guardé in tutta mia vita. Congratulations Andreas!!!! Grazie vero!!!!
Thank you, Andreas -- and these marvelous instrumentalists, the skilled recording techs, the reach of RUclips, and the enduring spirit of GFHandel -- for bringing this exquisitely beautiful and deeply moving composition to us! Many times, when I allow this to flow over and through me after a stress-promoting day, the very palpable calming change in my body illustrates just how easily I can allow unhealthy tension to accumulate like background noise. Calm blessings to all. "Tomorrow's mastery begins with mental calm today."

This is a rather magnificent performance. So glad we have RUclips to share these moments with the world. Mr. Scholl is a brilliant countertenor. Just lovely.
This is heavenly and we are fortunate to have this recording, for this too shall pass. There is only this life and we must relish every beautiful sound, every lovely sight, every wonderful moment. We must not waste our time dreaming of some mythiical return to a nonexistant paradise.
I'm not sure about the God and heaven thing but our large cortex is a recent evolutionary jump and it's this part of the brain which appreciates melodies, rhythms, poetry and art. In the future we could imagine beings with a much greater cortex or cortex like functions, perhaps some kind of super AI or enhanced human, that could experience things literally beyond our imagination.
Have never heard of this artist before. What a divine voice. Something somehow different from all the other fabulous counter tenors I love... I will look for his recordings/repertoire. Thanks RUclips.!
I was so happy to listen him alive in Estonia! I was sitting in front... and as a singer in choir it was most usefull to see when he takes breath... how he keeps posture. It is all just perfect! He is taking so pure high notes like without effort... hi sings without pressure! ... he reminds me Georg Ots... from different voice group of course. My deepest love and respect! Rauno Th Ps. You cant forget his voice, when you have heard it! Close to the phenomen of Farinelly. Sry. ... and i have listened it more than 12 times in row! How beautiful it can be? Bravo!

@Florian 2 Why don't you just get off this post? Why spend time on something you claim to detest?
"why anyone would hate on this is beyond me", The world abounds in misery, which, having given up, wants only to cloak everything in darkness. To no avail. This performance, these performers, their instruments, and all such human-created beauty and effort call us all to reach for more than what we are today. Joy will always triumph.
@@p.b4287 let's hear your sqwacking voice instead darling!
wundervoll, so schön, so zart, so hell, so klar und doch so gehaltvoll,Seelen berührend und Herz öffnend Einfach wunderbar
Das Genie dient den Herzen. Dank!
Melodiosa voz, sublime, simplemente es perfecto... Andreas Scholl espectacular..
the first tone of his voice, absolute divine and pure. So breath taking.
Indubbiamente MOLTO Bravo. BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO
EXQUISIT !!! Such controlled sensitivity.
EPITOME of musicality & baroque.
Stays in your heart ... FOREVER !!!
Found myself holding my breath. Intense. Beautiful.
This is the best performance of Ombra mai Fu i have found.
he is the voice of baroque, like an angel. Amazing
I'm so happy this is the most viewed version of Ombra mai fu on youtube. Very seldom you see the best version being the most popular.
Andreas Scholl.......greatest voice ever.......!!!! talent and handsome ...too........thank you for posting his beautiful music.....
This is a rather magnificent performance. So glad we have RUclips to share these moments with the world. Mr. Scholl is a brilliant countertenor. Just lovely.

Well sad, Rodney. I feel the same way. 👍
You are right. As much as I hate the fact that youtube facebook and microsoft own us all, for the joy of things like this, I am truly grateful
What a heavently voice! I adore Scholl!
I just read that this song was the very first piece of music EVER to be played over the radio in 1906!!
+Scott Hartman Quite a difference from the crap that gets played these days.
Just think, it might be the first song from our world to be heard in another.
@@billyboyjones5746 I really hope so.
Fantastic choice!
Seems you’re right. Here’s a recording of the broadcast

His lightness of touch and control is exquisite!
I have nothing but to admire his beautiful voice. Bravo!
Such a beautiful redition of this divine aria by Handel.
2:38 that smile says it all. Simply the best, Bravo Sir Scholl!
if mortals can sing this good, I wonder how heaven will sound like.
Heaven will sound..*snicker* like heaven!!
there is no such thing as heaven but in this world. love life the way it is
This is heavenly and we are fortunate to have this recording, for this too shall pass. There is only this life and we must relish every beautiful sound, every lovely sight, every wonderful moment. We must not waste our time dreaming of some mythiical return to a nonexistant paradise.
Is Clark Kent a mortal?
I'm not sure about the God and heaven thing but our large cortex is a recent evolutionary jump and it's this part of the brain which appreciates melodies, rhythms, poetry and art. In the future we could imagine beings with a much greater cortex or cortex like functions, perhaps some kind of super AI or enhanced human, that could experience things literally beyond our imagination.
Pure excellence.... To this date Andreas Scholl is without doubt the Greatest.
Brilliant stunning beautiful what a voice what a fantastic piece ❤️ of music 🎶 heavenly
His voice is so beautiful, it made me cry in the best way.
E já são 23 anos..... desde 1999, desta apresentação
Such restraint, such delicacy, reverence for the subject...gives me chills
I just can’t stop listening to this again and again! It is truly wonderful! Thank you for letting us all listen to you.
Incredible. Absolutely incredible. Scholl nails this piece. Probably the best version I've heard. Bravo all around.
A very delightful rendition of this Handel classic and in the countertenor, so masterfully and beautifully sung to be the envy of angels.
I was brought to tears by this. There's so much love.
Today I discovered this man, he is fantastic. Voice 100% pure.
Have never heard of this artist before. What a divine voice. Something somehow different from all the other fabulous counter tenors I love... I will look for his recordings/repertoire.
Thanks RUclips.!
I feel uncontrolled exaltation every time I listen to him.
Rauno Th
Ps. You cant forget his voice, when you have heard it! Close to the phenomen of Farinelly. Sry.
... and i have listened it more than 12 times in row! How beautiful it can be? Bravo!
How lucky u are!! Wow I wish I can hear him live!
The best one ever.❤
What a wonderful voice ! That man is a god chosen!

What a masterpiece. Incredible performance
Beautiful ❤
Every time I see this man singing, my own technique gets better. Too bad he's so beautiful in so many ways, I can't produce any sound because I'm speechless.
