    昔(sik7)
    meaning: old, usually used in documentaries, still used today
    錫(sik8)
    meaning: tin, as in element
    蝕(sik9)
    meaning: rotten/damaged (still used, for example: 月蝕 means lunar eclipse)

    Great video, thanks. I wonder how many Cantonese tones have a counterpart in Vietnamese. I don't speak either, by the way.

      Thank you! Vietnamese has slightly more tone variety than Cantonese but I’m intrigued too! Gonna look this up and ask my Vietnamese friends now👀

    If your an English speaker learning and the tones are confusing…. Would pll know from context or would they still be confused about what your trying to say?

      My pronunciation isn’t off! Maybe just a little nervous in front of the camera but not off! People do understand from context in the sentence, just like how we don’t mix up “sun” and “son” in English!

      On the contrary, I bet you are not! It does takes a while to train your ear and your voice but once you got the hang of it, its all just smooth sailing

      I think 5 and 6 is the trickiest for beginners but a tip I always tell my student is to think of them as opposites!
