There are actors, good actors, great actors, and legends. I honestly believe Tom Hanks is a legendary actor. He pulls me away from real life and makes me believe the story he's telling.
Castaway still makes me break down sobbing when he finally gets off that island. As I see it, there are so many existential psycho-spiritual elements throughout the story. Many of us have had “island” experiences when we are “stuck” in our lives and we don’t know how to get unstuck. Also, Wilson (volley ball) is the transference object that must be let go of in order to be free because Wilson served his purpose on the island and is no longer needed. This movie is profound and Tom is brilliant.
The real theme whether its actually in the film or not, whether you see it or not, isn't about what the world does to this character, its what the character does with the world. HE is the one that should be casting away all of them. That should be the audience take. That's empowerment.
@@ericwilliams626 Perhaps there is no “real theme.” The theme is whatever an individual takes away from seeing the film and it’s different things for different people. Another example is the movie, “Field of Dreams.” People interpret that film differently and for me the “theme” is the final moments of the film when the son (Kevin Costner) heals his relationship with his father albeit the “ghost” of his father. I sobbed at the end of that film. Kevin has said that many grown men have weeped over that film as well. Other people think the movie “theme” is about building the baseball diamond to save the farm or something else. That’s the fascinating thing about art, music, books, movies. The creator can have a certain theme in mind (or not) when they created their work but ultimately public opinion will persevere. In a sense, when you put your work out into the world you have to release control over how it is received and perceived by others. Another example is the classic pop song “American Pie” by Don McLean. Many music critics and others have ascribed prophetic properties to this song and Don has denied it all. Thank you for the interesting discussion. Best wishes.
I so appreciate your approach to interviewing Mr. Bensigner! You ask a question and let the celerity talk. You don't interrupt. You're only agenda is to let them tell the story. This is how it's supposed to be! Keep up the great work!
My all time favourite actor! I’m 74 and have watched a lot of movies. Tom Hanks, first, picks the right movies, plays his character to the T, and has superb skills and talent to the moon and back!
Yes I used to feel that way. He is not what you think. He moved to Greece to get away due to allegations of pedophilia. He purchased a young girl and she came forward. He had something to do with the death of Isaac Kappy who outed Hollywood.
The Forest Gump story is amazing and just a great example of what a great director is and how important it is to respect actors and establish that kind of collaborative connection between actor and director. So great.
Would you rather be with john candy ( trains, planes n automobiles ) or maybe traveling with David spade or chris Farley . Or maybe travel with Chevy Chase . 🤔?
Tom respects the questions. He is thorough in his answers. He teaches through his answers. He is a great communicator and a great storyteller. A class act.
Except for Wilson’s monologue when he’s pissed because Chuck just threw him off the cliff....”I’m not just some gd volleyball” was one of the lines. I don’t remember the rest.
Graham is a damn underrated interviewer. Amazing how few interviewers seem to forget so many fundamental points to conducting a good, concise interview. Know when to shut up and let your guest speak, ask questions that haven't been asked forty times that very week, etc. All basic and yet so many make interviews unbearable by making themselves the focus moreso than the interviewee.
I don’t think there would ever be a Forest Gump without Big. That was a movie that showed how ideal Hanks was the the part, perfectly encapsulating the child-like innocence as an adult.
Tom Hanks is so humble "I know you probably wanted Brad Pitt or Kevin Kostner but you're stuck with me" Are you friggin kidding me?!?! I'd chalk it up as "I've made it" if Tom Hanks is playing me in a movie!!!
My recollection of Hanks was when I was a very little kid watching the show Bosom Buddies. I didn't know any of the adult jokes but would just be mesmerized by Tom Hanks. He is a genius!
This is the standard of acting it can be the life or death of an actors career to this day he is the only actor I could watch for three hours straight with nothing more than a volleyball, yet stay completely captivated by their performance. The humbling nature of hanks, is the real gem though..
I can't woody out of my head everytime he speaks and when I was a kid, the first time I watched castaway I never realised it was the voice actor who did woody from toy story.
Jim Jomes you are a moron I’m waiting for the regular people who do the same thing to come forward or evidence too. I mean them damn liberals just raping and killing I mean Jesus
When I watched Castaway I was struck by the fact that the hero wore pants after a year or two on a deserted island. I know that was because they wanted a PG rating for the movie, but in real life I doubt the guy would have bothered with pants.
Tom Hanks is a genius. That iconic shot where he kills the fish with spear. He has made himself at home on the island, he is the master of that environment. Good job letting him talk, Graham! Tom talked for about 2 minutes with no interruption.
That movie changed my life too! I always heard “Hey Mr. Wilson!!” every time someone learned my name. Then Tom started yelling at that darn volleyball, and it all changed.
At the end of the movie Castaway, Tom's character is standing at the crossroads trying to decide which way to go after that cute gal stopped in her driveway and said hi and Tom asked her directions! I remember in another previous interview, Tom was asked which road he would have taken if his character had a choice personally and he said he would have gone back up the driveway to see the woman in the pickup truck with a smile! There you go, a sequel to Castaway! I see a block buster in the making here!

@0:28 Wait a minute...TH is a robot? Those some good acting skills 😂
Tom Hanks is always a spectacular interview.
Did u know he rapes kids and sacrifices them to moloch
Evidence?
Plenty
And you'd be willing to present me with said evidence?
@@to819 look it up you will find it trust me
After playing two plane crash survivors, perhaps he’s been type cast.
That's insane, if I had to not chat with someone in my general vicinity for several hours at a time while working, or lounging or while walking my dog I would loose my mind!!!
How many charges pending?
So no one is going to bring up the Elephant in the Room?
Castaway wasn't a ship crashing. That's not in-depth at all G.
What is the life raft he was on was named "Ship"? Then it's kinda true...
Cast away was my favorite movie very sad but great movie i watch it alot tom hanks is a legend
Why are you in Greece Tom ?
For the pizza
it's hilarious how far trolls can go based off of 1 or 2 baseless social media posts.
Give me free citizenship to another nice country and I'd be spending 2020 outside of the US too!
Because of the pizza
@@CannabisUseOnly a lot more than that
Incredible interview...
Thanks for watching! -AD
Hanks is like, where are the hot dogs and the walnut sauce!! I demand my snacks now, in the hot tub!! Freak.
I could listen to Tom Hanks talk all day.
Hes a good actor, he makes it seem like he hates creepy islands.
Fascinating. I wish I could ask him 1,000 questions
I think the world of Tom Hanks, a fine man and a fine actor.
I really would love a Tom Hanks Comedy. It's been far too long. I miss it.
