Music video by The Cure performing Primary. (C) 1987 PolyGram Video International
I'm a bassist. This is my favorite Cure song. I never knew it was two basses.
Yup - they play it with a bass, a Bass VI and guitar live (depending on the lineup) - but this was two P basses on the Album, written on a Bass VI (but Robert couldn't make the bass behave in the lower register so switched to the P Bass).
I just discovered that today!! Wow!!
que mau gosto amigo
Wait till you hear Disintegration…
@@Teacherinasubie the song High has 3 basses.
I dated a goth girl in the mid to late 80's and she got me hooked on The Cure. We were very different and I was into rock/metal and mainstream pop music. I was so glad she did. We did not last long together, only months, but I still love this band and many of their songs to this day. I am a 50 year old UK male.
Same thing happened to me, and it started out with Oingo Boingo...from there I found so many on my own including The Cure.
Yes
@@AMGbrakedancer Hot girls always get you into the Cure. First girl I have known with a Tatoo and a piercing, introduced me to The Cure a long time ago. Kiss me Kiss me was a new record. I think that is one of reasons for their sucess, plus they are a A1 Banging Post Punk Band, who make the rest of them except Joy Division look like jokes.
It would have been a sin to be from the UK and not know The Cure
Agree with Alfredo.. it was a hot girl that got me hooked in the 80’s
Two bass and a drummer, and all the noise they make, they are the best banda ever, true rock'n rollers.
Agreed - except I'd say it's sound rather than noise!
@@louisedomenech I don't think so, there is 2 basses, I don't know if the Robert's bass is an Fender precision bass like in this video, maybe a bass VI, but there is 2 basses in this song :)
@@HeyBulldog-Beatles-Tribute actually it was. The sound engineer gave Robert a bass VI the he used to write the song with but as he states in an interview, the low E had a buzz or a humming noise. He ended up using a Fender P to record. They just used some compression and flange effects
@@seanhughes2815 Thanks for this precisions ;) where do you read this kind of studio stories about The Cure? :)
@@HeyBulldog-Beatles-Tributethere’s at least two songs with three basses in them by The Cure. High and Letter to Elise - both feature dual Bass VI’s and Simon on his 4 string.
What makes this song unique to me are the two basses. They create a very unique sound that fits the mood perfectly.
Bass is insane, soul disturbingly good.
pozzzdro🎸
Ce que fait cette chanson parfait c'est Robert Smith et Simon Gallup
I know and I saw that myself thank you I know I'm not the only person in the world that knows this and I'm a girl by the way hey Love The Cure live on!
I never knew they had two bassists - I'd guess it was on a song-by-song basis. Incredible song, incredible voice, incredible band.
This song has been stuck in my head for days. Best Cure song ever.
Try being stuck in your head for decades ! …….. you’ll get there in due time.
@tiffanyr591 I have grown to enjoy having an amazing song stuck in my head for days and even weeks....I've gone weeks without needing any speakers because the song sounds so clear in my mind. Is usually a song that is stunningly unforgettable
One of the great bassline driven singles of the era. No doubt about it.
Murderous then, and murderous now.
Great music is timeless. It simply lives forever...
Bass is killer....
@@dickyboyryw hello Richie yes i love this band His amazing one if one if the best artist on the world i never listen tout a musicien like that before he has sex appeal like like tottaly awsome
Thats why I like the Stranglers
Exactly!!! The enhanced bass lines are just awesome not only here but on the whole album
This is my favorite Cure song. There are so many great ones but this one just resonates with me deeply for some reason. Love it!
It's one of the few that I have heard that is upbeat. I included it on my Work Out playlist. It really is a good song.
It’s the bassssss broooo
I think is the best Cure song as well, it's weird that it isn't included on the best of album. Very few songs make me want to pick up a Bass and learn it, but this one does it.
I just discovered it and 🤯🤯🤯... Fucking amazing!!! 🌟✊🥰🥳🥰🌟✊🕺✨🕺✨
It is my favorite as well. Good day!
Loved The Cure in the 80s, went to see them in the concert, enjoyed them in new wave clubs that we visited and just in the car. That was great era in music and entertainment in general and the Cure was at the top of that list for us. Great and timeless music.
My favourite from them. What a brillant bass!
The bass is holding down the rhythm while the other bass is playing lead simply brilliant love the cure always have
This is the most obvious case of this, but The Cure did this quite a bit. The melody in Lullaby, Pictures of You, High, Letter To Elise, Faith - and there's plenty more, were all played on Bass.
This song never gets old.... EVER!
Agree 💯
Best Bass performance in a song ever. My ears never forget,
Ray Lehto jerry was a racecar driver
+Ray Lehto The Cure's music has some of the most epic bass lines, including this one.
Fascination Street falls into that category.
Ray Lehto Good but definitely not the best
A FOREST,,,,,say no more.
Always and forever thank you to Great Britain, the British people and their creativity for giving the rest of the World hundreds of unique bands such as The Cure and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere.
What would our lives have been without British bands?
Fantastic song. I love this period of Cure more dark and goth. Simply the best!
Silvia Grandi agreed. Didn’t really care to much for their stuff after it became commercialized main stream popular.
That's probably due to living in Crawley lol. I live there too and it's really such a dull and uninteresting place. Most people here are depressed honestly, myself included. Seeing them as big as they are gives me hope
Not anything Goth at all. Not one bit. This is POP MUSIC.
@@clvrswine really? Have u listened to a drowning man or The funeral party
@@david_post_punk All Cats Are Grey looks like a funeral song in a fog graveyard.
The bass as rhythm guitar in this song is genius.
I love The Cure.
i love the disease

The sound of the Fender Precision Bass.....Perfect
I can listen to this all day! Man I miss the 80s
My favorite The Cure song................. greetings of Perú..
Not only one of the best Cure Songs, but top of the 1980's list. This was Staple on KROQ and all the Punks loved it too. Great Song!
Remember when KROQ was good? When Rodney wasn't a joke? I'm an old now. I think I will listen to X, Boingo and Cure all damn day.
Love "Jeddum Fishem" Poor Man, Richard Blade...I was at the concert with them for the Depeche Mode 101 album at the Rose Bowl. It was Thomas Dolby, OMD, Wire, then Depeche. No other station could ever compare to KROQ "rock of the 80's"
hackman55able This song hit KROQ right before I had to.leave Long Beach for the Navy and the late night Dj was kind enough to tell me it was The Cure
YEP, this is one of their best songs....along with PLAY FOR TODAY and A FOREST
@@rebjiii 100% agree
The Cure is my cure for anxiety and depression always..🤩💋
Oooh yes i agree, they’re the appropriate Cure for all the diseases of our mind , body and soul, I’m sure and certain!🙏🙏🙏⚡️💕
Robert looks amazing in this video! Wow!!
This is such a highly underrated song.
Lehlila Devandria was a massive hit
Gareth de-Witt not really
Is not
2 bass guitars, fantastic
WOW! Double Bass!!
Seen them performing this live on their Faith tour at Newcastle City Hall in 1981.
I've still got the massive concert poster advertising the gig. Classic!
Vamos a Tocache! 🔥🔥🔥
This was the absolute perfection in everyway
The music, the lyrics, the aesthetic and Robert was insanly gorgeous, a pure beauty from the essence's youth
It brings back so many memories. I'm proud of being a the Cure Fan since the old days! I love the Cure and I'll always will.
0:36 [Verse 1]
The innocence of sleeping children
Dressed in white and slowly dreaming
Stops all time
I slow my steps and start to blur
So many years have filled my heart
I never thought I'd say those words
0:59 [Chorus]
The further we go and older we grow
The more we know the less we show
The further we go and older we grow
The more we know the less we show
1:22 [Verse 2]
The very first time I saw your face
I thought of a song and quickly changed the tune
The very first time I touched your skin
I thought of a story and rushed to reach the end too soon
1:45 [Bridge]
Oh, remember
Oh, please don't change
2:12 [Verse 3]
So the fall came, thirteen years
A shiny ring and how I could forget your name
The air no longer in my throat
Another perfect lie is choked
But it always feels the same
2:36 [Bridge]
So they close together
Dressed in red and yellow
Innocent forever
Sleeping children in their blue soft rooms still dream
3:00 [Chorus]
The further we go and older we grow
The more we know the less we show
The further we go and older we grow
The more we know the less we show
Thanks a lot for the lyrics. Love this song. Love Rob Smith. The CURE went in Hall of Fame. Now in 2023 it's a timeless band. Friendly from France
The further we go, and older we grow, the more we know, and less we show ! Young Robert Smith was such "lucide" A great man & such a beautiful soul ! Love him forever
It's only 38 years old. Holy shit, where has my life gone?
❤️

I ask myself the same question!
Then you better learn bass guitar boy!! NOW... do it now!
You can really appreciate a BASS player here, I mean Simon is sweating his blush off, it's all just f#$king fabulous.
Amanda Smith lol that is so cute how you stated, "Simon is sweating his blush off"!
actually two bass players here. Robert and Simon
Bad Ass, I've been listening for years and never realized two bass guitars until I just saw this video now.
Very gifted musicians.
+Recordgrooves often a bass-VI and a bass
Yeah, pretty much the cures signature sound, the Fender Bass IV. You can see Simon playing one in the fascination street film clip. Although it's almost always Robert that plays it on the albums / live.
The further we go, and older we grow, the more we know, the less we show....
Lodreipeina . For 30 years I've never known those lyrics til now. For that I thank you!

WE GO.
WE GROW.
WE KNOW.
WE SHOW.
This is one of my favourite lyrics of his. It's so simple but it highlights so much about the way people interact with each other and adapt to the world.
I just wrote something about what you noticed: "the more we know, the less we show"... Brilliant, what you say ! The question is "why does it turn so ?" I think: because we're more afraid of our cops, our employers, our "justice of lawyers" than of the worst bandit ever." And I like to add: it was much more beautiful, when we showed more !
One of my favorite Cure tracks
He is so handsome here
I AGREEEEEE!!!!!
HERE??? He's handsome anywhere. blood red lipstick smeared across his face and all. I've loved him since 1980. I'm a 60 yr old woman commenting on my husbands account.
One of the masterpieces of The Cure ❤
That killer bass!!!!
The Cure= REAL TALENT AND CREATIVITY! Their style of Rock is "my style of rock." "Before Indie Rock (which I am also a fan of), there was the Cure." Bottom Line, this Band has never ever EVER, let me down. They are that great and I will always be impressed by them!
This and "A Forest". Brilliant......just brilliant.
Not a forest. this is primary, on the album faith.
@@801GMC you missed the "and".
Yes . great works of art raise dopamine ..both pieces raise dopamine
They are great, always. Practically every song they do is pretty much epic.
this was a great little single. fantastic basslines as per usual.
This is easily the best song by The Cure... in my opinion.
Your not alone.
certainly not, omg... 😆🤦♀
2025 and we’re all still here. Stayin’ in the good ol’ days
"Good ol" I say 13-ly
One of the greatest bands on earth.
The song that introduced me to the 80s. No other song is more iconic.
Yeap, their stylings were OG , if u know what i mean
Circling back to this after a long hiatus, Faith was one of my favorite albums in the 80's. I always loved Primary, but listening to it now I can hear the genius in the bass playing. Wow!
Masterpiece. It's one of my favourite of THE CURE.
Hard to believe that this is 35 years ago...WOW!
As fresh today as it was back then
Fergal Freeman the video is from 1987 though
Thanks, yep, was talking about the song and not the video, but thanks for the info.
That is either a typo or when the rights to this video were bought/established. KissMeKissMeKissMe was 1987. By that time it was Robert,Simon,Lol,Boris,Porl and Roger. He was way into his trademark look by then.=)
amers83 the video was released in 1987 as a part of Standing on a beach / Staring at the sea compilation
"Faith" and "Seventeen Seconds" have always been my best loved albums by The Cure . I really like the style of robert smith playing guitar.
Mine too. Three imaginary boys added on those two
😂@@ZAOUWV
One of the best songs of all time....love it.
Love the pace of this song!!Robert Smith is amazing
The Cure made friggin awesome videos too!! Even in all of their Eighties-ness, they all still hold-up very well!!!
Very first Cure song I heard back when I was in college '79-83
2022. Still do love the haunting sound and deep lyrics of this unic and Timeless band ! Robert Smith & Simon Gallup always take my breath away ! And I love it !
Awesome! Serious contender for 10 best rock songs of all time! By all means kick off your shoes and dance to this!
The sheer perfection of this UTTER classic may only EVER be attempted... Good LUCK with THAT... I can still remember when this was first released (unleashed?) all those DECADES ago... Now - as then - just WWWWWWWOW... 🙇
Russian rock bands of 80-90ths took a lof from The Cure. Some of them even developed the style and moved far ahead. Brilliant music, thanks Robert!
Do you have any recommendations?
I remember one Russian Band called Amnesty, a trio, sounding much like the Cure, around 1990.

Way before their time. Always have loved their music. ❤️ 🎼
I grew up to the Cure as a Gen X'r! The Absolute best concert I've ever been to was the Cure! The 3 hits of Lysergic also helped! Plus having the entire row of seats to myself to danke also made it Awesome! Always have and Always will love the Cure!
Perhaps The Cures finest moment... Amazing song! 😃
most beautiful human being i've ever seen.

Love The CURE since I was a teenager. In 2023 I'm 57 years old and I still do love the sound of The CURE !
And so you should it never gets old
Yeah, I'm 60 and I've seen them 5 times in California. over the years. LOVE them more than my luggage ;)
This song is awesome...it has a great driving beat ... I got to speeding tickets in the 80s just listening to the song & driving through the mountains. Also, god bless the PA State Troopers!!!
Fantastic bass line.
There were great clubs in my hometown Thessaloniki Greece and songs by Cure was always on the record players.
One of the most important bands of all time...
The 80's were an incredible time for music, The Cure one of the best. Even in Siouxsie and the Banshees he stood out. So glad he formed his own band!
As someone who lived through the 80s I am still in awe of the quality of the stuff the British produced. It is really incredible and I’m the number 1 fan of all those bands forever. That said, America had its moments. Pixies and Violent Femmes just to name two. And to name two more, Devo and Rem. Let’s not forget Appetite for Destruction came out in 87 and Metallica was rocking it hard. Different music, but the British also had the madmen of Iron Maiden, to name one band, chalking one up for metal. I’m more of a Joy Division, Cure, Clash and New Wave Punk in general guy myself. House of Love, Book of Love. That kind of thing.
I took so much speed in the 1980s listening to these bands, both live and on my Walkman. The perfect punk drug.
The great thing about learning about the popular bands that you mentioned is that they are all amazing in their own right, but the more you delve into their sound, you discover other similar talented artists and bands. These bands present a gateway of musical treasures.
This was my first introduction to the Cure, hooked ever since
