  • William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter born on November 30, 1825 and passed away on August 19, 1905. He is known for his realistic genre paintings which featured mythological themes, offering modern interpretations of classical subjects with an emphasis on the female human body. Bouguereau was a popular artist during his lifetime and received numerous official honors, enjoying significant popularity both in France and the United States. His work commanded high prices, but he was reviled by the Impressionist avant-garde who saw him as the quintessential salon painter of his generation. As tastes changed in the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public. However, in the 1980s, a renewed interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He is known to have completed 822 paintings, though many of their whereabouts are still unknown.
