A copy of the original daguerreotype of Joseph Smith Jr already exists, and his son, Joseph Smith III, made a copy of it, which was then submitted to the Library of Congress in 1879 for preservation. This copy holds significance as an authenticated image of Joseph Smith Jr. The Larson daguerreotype looks nothing like it.
An unedited version of the Library of Congress photo was discovered and brought forward in 2009, and contrary to some beliefs, the "Marshall" photo is not a copy of the RLDS painting of Joseph Smith Jr. but rather the other way around. It is highly probable that the RLDS painting was produced utilizing a Camera Lucida, a device that enables accurate tracing of a photograph with precision. The Marshall photo is a copy of a daguerreotype of a real person and exhibits photographic details such as "blown whites" and depth of field, characteristics associated with a three-dimensional object, whereas a painting inherently remains two-dimensional with none of these features.
While the Marshall photo and the former RLDS painting exhibit some similarities in the facial features, the artist of the painting clearly made artistic adjustments like straightening his nose and darkening the eyes. However, there is a clear mismatch in the alignment of the body between the two. The painting depicts an elongated and unnatural body shape, whereas the photo does not. Additionally, there are distinct differences in details, such as the presence of a filigree embroidered "S" on the cravat in the photo, which is absent in the painting. This is physical and tangible evidence that the Marshall photo IS NOT a copy of the RLDS painting.
It is noteworthy that Al Thelon, a distinguished specialist in daguerreotypes with over 40 years of experience, has confirmed the authenticity of the Marshall photo. Thelon independently affirmed that it originated from a daguerreotype source and was a contact print produced from a glass negative, based on the level of detail and clarity.
I suggest watching the three-part series by well-known portrait artist, David Lindsley. He breaks it down further - www.youtube.com/@davidlindsleystudio

Exactly this! Joseph Smith appeared to me in spirit multiple times as a child and a young adult. When the 2009 daguerreotypes was released, someone bought it for me and I immediately began crying as a recognized immediately Joseph. This current photo is not Joseph Smith, and quite certain a particular group of people are making money off the image.

I believe it really is Joseph. My wife is actually related to Joseph Smith and she, her brother, her dad, her grandma and most of the family have these exact cheekbones. They run strongly in her family and may be from his side.

It's not him and its getting way too much attention. But at end of the day, it does not matter what anyone really looks like.

Can computers, aided by anthropologists, turn this locket photo into a profile? Smith had a very weird, distinctive nose, forehead and chin.

Kelly, maybe someone could do some research on that oil painting to see if it looks like David, Joseph and Emma's youngest son, born after JS death?

It was verified by Joseph Smith III in the Saints Herald, August 15th, 1879. Less than a month after he sent a photograph of the painting to the LoC (July 1879) . He was the editor of the Saints Herald, and it says the painting was done when his Father was 36 years old (born in December 1805 this was anytime from December 1841-Dec. 1842), and the artist was from New York. David Rogers painted Joseph Smith for four days, September 16, 1842, when Joseph Smith was still 36, he turned 37 in Dec. 1842, died at age 38 in June 1844.
Junius F Wells stated in October 1885 that the nearly exact replicas of the 1879 Library of Congress Photo (they state is of a painting) was of a painting that he saw in person, visiting Emma Smith Winter of 1875-76, he said it was done by David Rogers and that when it was completed Joseph told Emma (again he was ALIVE when this forward facing painting was DONE) it "looks like a silly boy" and Junius asked Emma who also said it was NOT a good likeness, he was alive people! It was from LIFE!
Ask The Community of Christ Archivist how MANY Duplicate oil paintings there are? Too many she doesn't know the number. Joseph Smith III was using a damaged daguerreotype, damaged because it was copied onto a Carte de Visite in the 1860s, that it could not be copied again... but enough was visible to do a "better" copy.
If you read the 1910 letter by Joseph Smith III he Starts off telling the columnists to go to Iowa, there is a "duplicate oil painting" there, and it's a shame Utahns have little idea how Joseph Smith looked (despite him knowing Carter was selling photos of the painting), what was different, what did JS III have that was better than Carter's painting? The duplicate oil painting in IOWA, it shows injuries and features seen in my Carte de Visite, which was verified as being a great match in January 2023, Doctor Teghan Lucas and Maciej Henneberg wrote the article, they are forensic Anthropologists and found that this Larsen locket was NOT A MATCH, pg. 3, he knows this.

I wonder if Joseph Smith's cheeks are bigger on the death mask because he fell out of a window when he died and his cheeks got bruised.

Yeah, he lost his high cheekbones- if that daguerreotype is him. Seriously... ignored... legitimate scientific studies have been done on this subject by Forensic Scientist, with actual Phds, "A morphological comparison between a death mask of the American Prophet Joseph Smith and a photograph likely to depict him" January 2023, page 3.... There was one done by Doctors Teghan Lucas and Maciej Henneberg, in the Anthropological Review, there were found to be so many issues with this daguerreotype, but another matches LOADS better...

@@Snicklebeck He rolled onto his face, after this fall, but did NOT fall on his face, reread accounts of his murder. I'm surprised you really think the cheekbones match the death mask or the artwork? This man has flat cheekbones, Joseph Smith had very high cheekbones, and step deformity to the left orbital bone seen on the skull and the death mask of Joseph, not at all seen in this image in the vid; the locket man has a left nostril that is higher than the right (look at the original not at the doctored images in Weber's presentation), I am so sickened by this all and sad, just really sad. Please see my analysis of the eyebrows, my CDV totally matches the DIBBLE death mask, you can see his eyebrows! He actually has eyebrows! So many people said Joseph Smith had bushy, even THICK eyebrows, no way... would this person EVER be described as such.
Also of note--The chin is flat and and uneven, in the Locket, that is very unique, not seen in the death mask at all, not in the artwork. The eyes look exactly like Bertha Madison's, both have curly hair. Joseph Smith III rebuked a Utah artist for painting his father with wavy hair, stating his father's hair was NOT curly... and the ears, the inner cartilage is abnormally protruded to the outer edge of the ear, not seen in any of the artwork, but... seen in images of... drum roll... BERTHA MADISON. The nasal ridge in the locket image lines up with the lower lash line, whereas Joseph's gigantic nose protrudes very high at the line of his upper orbital socket. There is a deep scar pulling the lips upward on the left side of Joseph's face (his right), very visible in artwork and on the mask, not seen in this daguerreotype whatsoever, he really has an overall frown that is lopsided, but no "unconscious smile" made clear when you see it was from a bad scar from the time they shoved a glass vial into his mouth that BROKE.
