if it's personal, then his opinion can't be wrong. moreover, it his opinion was rather thoroughly well supported by his analysis. as a designer myself, i agree with his take 100%
1) The design team had ease of repairability/cost in mind in the new design. 2) The signal stalk got added back due to customer complaints and desire. Elon listened to his customers.
It seems the rear was costing a lot to repair when rear ended in the previous design. The new one projects more at the bottom and the roof is protected by having an extra changeable part to save changing the whole roof.
I'm going to stick my neck on the line and guess that the script for this video was produced by AI with the intent of increasing engagement through divisive opinions and subjective takes🤔 It feels like it's been designed to spark debate rather than provide the usual tech-driven content. Anyone agree?
I think it totally could be. The old Google CEO went on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, and advised the podcaster to do exactly what you are saying with his RUclips videos, also advising using AI to do so.
Model Y isn't an enthusiast's vehicle. It's a mass market vehicle that's best in class, with a fresh look. It's going to increase sales because of those factors.
I think the design caters to the masses. A lot of those folks could care less what it looks like. They just need the function. Theres a reason why this is the best selling car in the world. This refresh adds a lot of what the old Y didnt have. And if it was best selling car before that, well, look out. This car is going to be everywhere.
I like the new design. But more to the point, the most important addition of a bumper level washable camera means RoboTaxi functionality. That means you’re buying a car with a chauffeur.
I think you're being a bit too harsh. It's true that this new Tesla design does not hugely improve on the Chinese electric vehicle designs, but the fact is that those Chinese designs were already years ahead of anything happening in the rest of the world, so simply catching up as this design somewhat does is enough of an accomplishment in my opinion.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Model Y was criticized for it. It’s funny looking front end for since it came out. I guess we all got used to that. This front end looks quite modern and contemporary. I think they’ve done a great job on this and it’ll be easier to manufacture and service.Time will tell.
I'm surprised at your take on this vehicle. It looks great to me and I think it will be better in person. The rear hatch is likely now 2 pieces which would make it easier to repair in the event of an accident. The turn signal stalk is just safety to me. I hate the push button turn signals, have you tried to use them? If you need to signal while turning the wheel, you have to look down or wait to use the turn signal. All the changes will likely result in better sales and a better driving vehicle (just like the new Model 3 is better to drive).
why the obsession on light bars? The point of a new design is to be different from the old version. It's weird because you are so used to the old design. Get over it.
its the car for masses and big brother of the cab. Tesla has X and S, why would they make the Y look like them? Price has been coming down like Tesla said would come and a better cabin, ride and hardware4.
Dont know what this episode is about, tbh. And that break-up of the rear section is to reduce repair costs in the event of rear-end accidents. Previous accidents required the entire rear to be replaced. Anyway, seems the Model Y always dissappoints on launch and then sells like hotcakes anyway.
I was thinking about how in a few years, the old style 3 and y headlights will be lower in numbers than the refresh models. They will have a bit of romance to them eventually I think.
I absolutely love the design in case it doesn’t sell well Tesla can always change it. But I do think you might be missing a bigger point here, negative initial reactions come in like a tsunami, even when they are a minority, whereas the majority of actual reactions are often unposted. We will see if time forces an aesthetic change or this design endures❤ Kudos Franz!
I like that they broke it up in 3 sections. Imagine getting into a minor fender bender and having to replace the whole thing. And now if other models get the same treatment you can use the same part number. Just different length for center section. Cheaper to make cheaper to own cheaper repair. More bang for my dollar.
I don’t agree with your analysis and your taste. I think it’s a refinement of the initial model and they added the front light bar concept to tie it in to the new Tesla look. Hopefully the multi-piece rear deck will reduce replacement cost which are high for the original.Sorry man.
This feels like an argument on what's the best topping to put on a pizza. Total personal opinion, I love the new style and it may end up being my first Tesla.
This is a ridiculous video. This was a refresh. I think it’s great. I currently own a 2024 model y awd. I plan on upgrading after a year that new model is out.
Wrong... Wrong... Wrong... The primary reason for the light bar is to better facilitate the vision, at night, for the vehicle cameras. This better enables their Full Self Driving software; (Currently Assisted)... And, yes, Tesla was not the first to do a front light bar. For me; I trust Tesla's tech more than any other manufacturer. In that they sell more electric vehicles here in the USA than any other manufacturer; I am not alone. In fact, I think they sell something like 50% of all Battery Electric Vehicles, from the sum of all the other manufacturers, in the USA. Clearly, more people like Tesla than don't. Not to say that if Elon stayed out of politics; the demand would likely be even higher.
The car has more technology than any other car in the world and y’all were talking about some fucking headlights really this will not age. Well I promise you.
Feels like a desperate mainstream media style piece of reporting. Come back to facts rather than emotions, fact is the new model Y sales are already rocketing in Asia. Very very good chance it will go crazy when released ROW.
Design is personal. You don't have to like it and that's fine; don't buy one. I for one think that the front of the Model Y refresh looks sportier than the 2024 version and like it better. To each their own...
honest take. but a bit harsh. lets see it in real life before making any judgement. frankly model 3 refresh was perfect in comparison for sure. whats weird is nofanfare, no secret youtuber reviews being release like model 3. why?
Elon said the future should look like the future. Thats why hes creating "spaceships"/rockets and boxed/cyber cars and trucks. Hes trying to evolve the design into something new, and because the Model Y is already a car in the market they need to take their time and EVOLVE the car's design over the years. They didnt do the same with the cybertruck because it's a brand new vehicle.
The new Model Y looks a little goofy, but not weird. It looks middle of the road for today's global mass market EVs and very similar to other EVs in its class. IMHO it looks like an alien robot spaceship transforming it's best to hide among human built cars
I think it looks better. Great 👍🏾 would buy. I remember the same critiques about the previous aesthetics 😅 I remember what was/is said about cybertruck ... Just stop 😅 respect that
I don't agree with this video AT ALL, I like the new look and will buy one the second it's available in the U.S. I bought a refreshed Model 3 and could not be happier.
Ok. You don't like it. Don't present it like no one likes it. Your reasons are completely subjective and not shared by everyone. You get a thumbs down for this episode.
The Model Y has never been attractive as a chubbier version of Model 3. This update has many interior and ride improvements that offset the awkward exterior design.
refreshed model 3 was spot on, addressed most prior shortfalls and made it look better while making sense of every change. This new model y is not forward looking, it's an attempt to cater to what they think the market wants, looking at the competition, rather than at the future
All about nothing, there's little to no problem with this design. Sounds like someone is trying to make a big deal...out of nothing, the real question is why?
Honestly I don’t care what it looks like I’m going to get one because for 1 it’s safety 2 full self driving 3 efficiency. I think there’s a paradigm change happening where people don’t really care about how their car looks (to an extent) just as long as it gets them from A to B comfortably, efficiently and safely. But I could be wrong who knows lol
Other than the fact that the front design will probably cause more unseemly gaps, I like the overall design. One possible negative is where will the rear license plate be attached?
I feel the new refreshed design looks better than the old design.
Old one looked like a frog 🐸
Duck@@IamBlaze23
Agreed!!
I agree.
Not in sync here, I think it looks much better
Agreed. Looking forward to upgrading my 2024 model Y to this.
Totally agree. I don't really share any of his points on this.
yeahh i don’t know what he’s going on about. glad to see not everyone’s hating it. it’s the cybercab that looks a little wonky to me.
You’re wrong on this episode. Remember, aesthetics are personal preference, and I disagree with your elementary take
if it's personal, then his opinion can't be wrong. moreover, it his opinion was rather thoroughly well supported by his analysis. as a designer myself, i agree with his take 100%
The new design looks far better
kind of neutral on it but is is more aerodynamic.
it looks ugly, like a 2000's saturn
1) The design team had ease of repairability/cost in mind in the new design.
2) The signal stalk got added back due to customer complaints and desire. Elon listened to his customers.
100% agree...I'm very confused by this video's take.
The signal stalk is not that important.
i agree. this video in whole is a L take.
the polls on X said people generally like it more than the old version. I like it much more. It looks great.
I think it looks great
I don’t think it’s ugly at all
I really like the new Model Y, still can't afford one but it is beautiful
It seems the rear was costing a lot to repair when rear ended in the previous design. The new one projects more at the bottom and the roof is protected by having an extra changeable part to save changing the whole roof.

This isn't a criticism of the channel or content, simply honest feedback.
I think it totally could be. The old Google CEO went on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, and advised the podcaster to do exactly what you are saying with his RUclips videos, also advising using AI to do so.
I think it looks great, like many other on X and from the 50k pre-order
How many pre orders Cybertruck have vs units sold?
@@oasistobe and of the pre orders... how many of them didnt put any money down?
its ugly
I think it’s one of the best looking Tesla vehicles yet!
@@jstudios3756 facts kinda looks like a mix of Cybertruck mixed with old model y
I'm quite surprised that you think the new Y is ugly. I think it's great.
looks fine….better than the old one🎉
Model Y isn't an enthusiast's vehicle. It's a mass market vehicle that's best in class, with a fresh look. It's going to increase sales because of those factors.
I think that's the best looking one.
it looks like crap
Nonsense. Give me a break. It looks fine.
I think the design caters to the masses. A lot of those folks could care less what it looks like. They just need the function. Theres a reason why this is the best selling car in the world. Lightbar is better for FSD in the dark. Cameras can see better with that type of light.
Yeah, not sure why people hate the new design. I think it looks MUCH better than the old one.
"Broken up light bar..."? Is that a bad thing?
Matter of taste. I think the new design looks fine.
Doesn't look ugly to me, but it's my personal opinion. I like the sci-fi looks.
I hate people who are so negative on Tesla.
I think it looks great...you're entitled to your opinion. This will be another hit.
You will know you see a Tesla when theres is noone in the driving seat and the car still drives perfect.
Looks so much better. That's progress.
I'm surprised at your take on this vehicle. It looks great to me and I think it will be better in person. The new design is a great improvement over the old one. I'll happily buy once the non-Launch model is available in Australia.
I think it's just your taste that is weird. Love the new design. The rear will be much easier and cheaper to repair with the separated panel design.
1:31 Wide angle lens is usually unflattering and Jalopnik hates Elon. Your clip is the first I've heard about the negative looks actually...
I love the looks. Looks great imo
Yeah. It's growing on me. And over time you love it knowing that it's one of the best cars ever made.

It looks fucking siiiick!:) I've been waiting for a Tesla I liked the look of for my next car! When's it hitting Australia!?
I don't hate the new design, but I really do miss those old headlights. They were so distinctive and had such personality IMO.
I was thinking about how in a few years, the old style 3 and y headlights will be lower in numbers than the refresh models. They will have a bit of romance to them eventually I think.
WOW tough crowd! I think both the front with the light bar and the back look great. Definitely a modern improvement.
I like it, nothing weird at all here.

Frankly, I like the new styling! The old styling was becoming very dated. The new styling keeps Teslas design language and modernizes nicely.
I don’t agree with your analysis and your taste. I think it’s a refinement of the initial model and they added the front light bar concept to tie it in to the new Tesla look. Hopefully the multi-piece rear deck will reduce replacement cost which are high for the original.Sorry man.

BS its well received in China with the first day order. Glad it’s not polarising as the original y was
This seems like a stepping stone, design-wise, to prepare for the cybercab and to acclimate the public to Tesla's more futuristic design philosophy.

I'm sure you're all designers here and have been doing this your whole life.
I don't see it as a deal breaker at all. It may not be the ultimate design but I don't think it will hurt it
The light bar is "broken up" because the central section appears to be part of the hood (and it looks just fine to this viewer...)
