    Oh My God Howard!
    How we've both aged since Manchester (1982-1983) days!
    I met you in the Sydney Building, (Newly Renamed, "The Nelson Mandella Building" opposite the Manchester Polytechnic. It was apparently the last brand new student union building to be built before the Thatcher cuts...
    I was at the Polytechnic studying BSc Elect/Electron Engineering (with a particular interest in electronic music and digital processing of sound)
    {I went on to design a practical word recognition system around a BBC-B computer capable of recognizing the spoken numbers from 0 to 9 and the word, "dial" to dial a strouger telephone. As my final year project}
    I recall that you were a mature student enrolled at the Royal Northern College of Music just up next to the Pheonix Centre where I used to catch my 253 bus to Urmston, 7 miles out of town.
    I remember you going on about a new song you had written and you were talking about what to call it. You hummed out a few notes but it sounded to us a bit vague but I was amazed to discover years later that it was a hit just a year later when I heard it on the radio during my year out in industry at Bonar Instruments in Cheadale.
    I didn't make the connection until years later M8 when I discovered that you actually named it, "New Song!"
    How the hell are you ???.

  • @JohnAndrewsG
    @JohnAndrewsG 13 лет назад +1

    In the 80s, I worked in a large music store and sold lots of Jupiter 6 & 8s. This product evokes sonic memories of the same period. My other "all time favorites" are Oberheim's Matrix-12 and Sequential Circuits' Prophet 5. The eighties was a true blending of digital and analog. On on hand, digitally controlled (MIDI & patch memory) but still analog oscillators and generation. Of course, any disputes over how close the Jupiter 80 captures the era is like arguing CD merits vs. vinyl, or religion.

    Who cares how it creates the sounds, or whether they're anything like a Jupiter 8, or whether they're good/bad/indifferent - it's what you do with them that counts. Even with the best equipment around you can still make a song sound s*** (you only have to listen to what's in the charts now).

    If I had to give it any positive feedback, it would be that you can split this into different sections and play 3-4 different sounds at one given time. And, the synth sounds extremely lush. I'd have to actually sit down at one and test drive it.....

    Ok this is like, OMG gotta have this NOW!
    Howard is such a calm, non-marketing guy; I feel like I'm hearing from a fellow musician on the instrument with his presentation, no hard sell here.
    Seems to me the distinct interest of this keyboard is in the huge tonal palette that you can mix and control in realtime while playing.
    What remains a question is: how deep can you go with the touch screen on editing tones and partials? Do you have complete control, like with say MC-909, over selecting f

    @devmiles I believe that you might possibly have a bias in your commentary. While I agree that the Jupiter 80 is not an analogue synth, that is not in dispute, it is a piece of equipment which represents the era in which it was made. Which means to say, it is a MODERN SYNTH, quite frankly, if they had simply rebuilt the Jupiter would anyone buy it?

    I agree with Roland's philosophy 'we design the future', so they don't want to go back to old analog technology completely, but it would have helped everyone's needs if roland combined SuperNatural with real analog to make this...I am sure then it would have turned a lot more heads. (I played a Juno 60 at the guitar center...its effects were very limited and crap but i loved the analog osc and filters). Glad Dave Smith still sells real polyphonic analog synths.

    I'm sorry, but I think you are totally missing the point. The Jupiter-8 is an amazing synth even in 2013. It's so good that still today a 2nd hand Jupiter-8 will cost you 2-3 times more than a new Jupiter-80, and there's a good reason for that.

    Mr. Jones states several times in response to the interviewers' question that he is not interested in SuperNATURAL acoustic sounds, he prefers synths. That's the case with each and every keyboardist who can afford a JP-80 because a person who has the bucks for this will also have the bucks for hiring a real world trumpeter.
    The great mistake in my opinion is Roland placing the emphasis on SuperNATURAL which is simply not needed in mainstream music.
