This is one of the top ten songs of all-time for me. I’m a metal guy, but the 80s and 90s gave us so much goodness that wasn’t metal and I’m not ashamed to say it. 😆
I agree. there's no reason to be ashamed for liking songs that are not in your favorite genre! I've had some people ask me if I have songs that are a "guilty pleasure" to me, like something that I don't wanna admit I like? I say, nope, there's no such thing. A good song is a good song, period. My favorite music is what I guess people would call "classic rock"...but I aint a classic rock guy, I'm a "music guy" lol
This song came to mind when I was "homeless". Three things happened. First I felt at home yet had no house. I felt the will to live, I hadn't felt since I was a child. I sobered up and awakened, saving myself from my own self destruction. Now I see truth within and in front of me. People do not realise the lies they have been told keep them intoxicated on dopamine, so they are not sober. Drugs and alcohol do the same them, flood the brain with dopamine leaving them ultimately depressed, seeking the next dose, so stay in the lies.
When this song came out life was freaking good, plus I had just experienced being a kid in the 80s. I was a teenager, the future looked great. WTF happened?
Jewel is my dream. I close my eyes and get lost in her voice. I have never known happiness greater than how I feel when she sings. She speaks to my soul.

We didn't have computers or internet like today, and so I remember burning through cassette tapes and scratching CD's from replaying the song soo much in order to memorize the lyrics. However, we were fortunate if the CD cases contained lyrics written on the little booklets inside the cases. As kids we were always busy outside playing with friends. It was such an excitement and treat to sit in front of the old t.v. screen watching MTV and many other T.V. shows or going to block buster to rent scary movies on VHS. I miss those times a lot! 🥹

Much like Alanis Morissette, I came to feel some nostalgic feel-good with this song. I didn't realize that I would hear this so differently as a grown man. Your Joe Rogan podcast was something that brought me to my knees emotionally. This song, along with all your other hits of the 90s, hit so differently now. Jewel, your truly are that: A priceless piece of earthly elements. Keep singing, beautiful lady.
Couldn't agree more. I was a young girl with both of those amazing artists and even now, at 37, I can listen and evoke old feelings but they hit a bit different now and I love it all the more.

I worked as a still camera operator on stage at a private club event with her singing in Vegas in 2004. Her voice live is absolutely insanely good. Really nice lady
Here after the Rogan podcast also. I grew up listening to her in the 90’s but never appreciated her as much as I should or as much as I do today. I look at her in a totally different light now and this song is truly emotional.
“Guard your heart above all else, for it dictates your whole life” I hope these words bless someone who reads them. For so long I gave my heart away on a silver platter to many people who didn’t deserve it. Now, I’m appreciating this song knowing who has truly saved my soul- only Jesus!
The verse reads "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of your life." In the original language, heart and soul were not so much different things. Not like we imagine them today. The things you give away are not so easy to get back.
No one in this modern era of self-centeredness would make an anthem of self-reflection and accountability like Jewel did. Hell, it was unprecedented in the time that she did it. Life-changing song.
Still favoring the originality of those that write and sings their own songs. The world is flooded with amazing voices with a few writing for them. This is one of those great singer song-writers.
Amen Brother.. Jewel. Neil Young. And all the other singer/song writer/musicians. Hell...I can sing....but I'm definitely not an artist...lol really appreciate those types
+Ralf Gummerus Ralph, thanks for a bit of brain in your comment, the RUclips has so many idiotic statements I was very refreshed to hear your affinity for the writers and singers...thank God for you tube with all its warts, it is still a haven for art and opinions.
+Ralf Gummerus It's most likely because of these rich kids who copy their strange "idol" on T.V. The origional artists express their feelings of whatever it may be; good songs are written through suffering; through poverty all out of love to give an honest expression.
I had such a crush on this woman when I saw this video. I was 13, I think, and it was one of those life-changing, formative crushes that tells you something about who you are.
Love how she ended JRE singing this song. My mom used to play her album on car trips when I was a child and has always had a nostalgic happy feel when I heard her songs , but after that podcast I have a whole new appreciation for her. Adding her to all my happy playlist for sure lol
Probably one of the best episodes of JRE so far. Her story is amazing. Same thing with my mom playing her album in the house on weekends doing chores hahaha. Hearing her sing brings back memories.
Saw her when in studio audience of Letterman around when this was released. Amazing performance and even from the crowd she was the most riveting person I have ever seen, totally electric and magical.
My uncle just past away and he loved you. He told me about you growing up in Alaska and said you had it really hard. I loved your songs when I was a teen but now your words really mean something to me. Its the pain in living that actually means
Man, that opening line, "people living their lives for you on TV, they say they're better than you, and you agree." And this was written well before reality TV really took off and before the Kardashians were a thing. This is still a great song, and maybe even more important now.
I like that this comment isnot opinionated.its good to explain the important part of the song n it did sparks some inspiration about the song for others to see.
Yea, but you wanna know something? I really never would have paid any attention to Jewel, if it hadn't been for Alaska The Last Frontier. Of course, I had heard of her long ago and knew she was from Alaska and had lived a rather frugal life in her younger years, but I never really added it up until the name Kiltcher(SP?) popped up in the series, and I kept thinking that I had heard that name before. And of course, I had. It wasn't mentioned often when Jewel performed, but enough that it rang a bell with me. Seeing where she really came from and where she was raised, at least for a while, made me more curious about her. Hence, why I am actually replying on a Jewel video.
jewel makes great music she has more talent than 99% of the musicians and singers out right now (you also have to check out fiona apple all of her albums are classics she is very talented)
+newjack900 Listen to her amazing interview on Howard Stern. Her father and family are now on the Discovery channel because they are Alaskan homesteaders. She basically hitch hiked out of Alaska on her own at 15.

I met her once way before she made it big, she was playing in a contest in Anchorage bar to win a chance at a record contract. Seemed like a genuine and nice enough person.

I am happy to have lived, loved and learned through the 80’s , 90’s and 2000’s. Some of the best music, messages and life changing experiences came from them. I can only hope the future generations have the opportunity to be wild while they can, be accountable when they should, and have someone to tell them difference when they get caught up in one or the other. There is such a thing as too much and too little. Don’t get caught on one side or the other, be the middle and be mindful of everything.

I saw Jewel live in Milwaukee at a casino in a really nice little theater and it was awesome. She spent a lot of the time telling stories with this guy she brought as backup that she's apparently known and worked with for many years. Seemed like such a cool chick with a love for music, an interesting life, and deserving/really earned everything she has.
I really don't know what to say about Jewel. She had an upbringing that created an amazing song writer. But I have read her history, and, well, God Bless you Jewel.

I always loved her music, but her story was more incredible than anything ive could have imagined. Very moving and reminded me there is always a way forward in life, Jewel is a gem to society
A forgotten masterpiece! I don't even hear this masterpiece anymore on ANY radio these day. And yet, back in the year after this came out, this video was played so many times a day on VH-1. It really did not enter my mind that this would end up so underrated. Radios these days would only play "You Were Meant For Me" more than anything else by Jewel. This song is such a masterpiece, I listen to this more than anything else Jewel ever did. It is the catchiest song that I ever heard from her.
@@marlonleite7711 Thanks, I would just imagine that getting massive amounts of airplay and recognition wouldn't really go together with being underrated.

Seriously yes, this album stood out among dozens of amazing bands that released music that year. A tough feat in the 90's, as most bands were killing it.

Vandal Noire Oh hahah... sorry.. I didn't notice that I wrote that over the post.. Yes Ok sorry its late.. I haven't gotten enough sleep lately.. I should have noticed that... I don't always comment over a video before I post it so I wasn't paying attention to that... Ok Yes.. Music today is slim pickens.. there has been barely anything new style or rock since the 90's. Yes when Nickelback came along a whole new low came.. and no new good rock music.. I am happy I grew up when I did and have an appreciation for real music.. timeless music... not this bublegum cookie cutter crap.. yes I will like some pop there are a few artists and songs today.. but that is not my genre of music I like.. so it is really sad how far these record companies and one hit wonders have sunk.. and society believing and thinking its music.. and good music.. I SMH! :)
I feel bad for the little ones who think they live in the most "progressive" time. We were progressive without knowing it, without pressuring others. We used music, art, debate and conversation. We welcomed diverse opinions from diverse people. Today people live in echo chambers and want to destroy those who disagree. They will segregate themselves until there is no longer anyone who may shake their thinking. How I long for the 90's with all my heart, not for me, but for the newer generations. What a time to be alive. Thank you to all the great women and men who bared their souls to us..Jewel, Hope, Fiona, Tori, Delores, Sinead, Kurt, Jeff, Layne, Chris, Eddie among so many others..God Bless those of us who are still here. xxoo
Every new generation is more progressive than the next. Get off your high horse. Try being a teacher and applaud what they're doing instead of mistakenly believing your better.

Just checking in after the Rogan podcast. I've only heard a few of her songs over the years, but she's now super hero to me.
Facts baby.
Here after the Rogan podcast also. I grew up listening to her in the 90’s but never appreciated her as much as I should or as much as I do today. I look at her in a totally different light now and this song is truly emotional.

Wow!!! Great choice of words... I feel the exact same... Super!!! Hero!!!
“Guard your heart above all else, for it dictates your whole life”
I hope these words bless someone who reads them. For so long I gave my heart away on a silver platter to many people who didn’t deserve it.
Now, I’m appreciating this song knowing who has truly saved my soul- only Jesus!
Ps. I just love Jewel’s voice! She is a gift 💝
@ Rachel Yes, Jesus Christ saved mine too. He saved my life when I almost died post a surgery and now my soul as I know and love Him. 💛🙏🙌
Silver platter.. I am quite sure that you dont know who deserves what!
The verse reads "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of your life." In the original language, heart and soul were not so much different things. Not like we imagine them today.
The things you give away are not so easy to get back.
Yes he's only one Jesus he saved my soul 🙏it's so nice to have such a loving ❤God amen 🙏thank you for your comment
No one in this modern era of self-centeredness would make an anthem of self-reflection and accountability like Jewel did.
Hell, it was unprecedented in the time that she did it. Life-changing song.
It is so worth being old now to have been young then!

It's most likely because of these rich kids who copy their strange "idol" on T.V. The origional artists express their feelings of whatever it may be; good songs are written through suffering; through poverty all out of love to give an honest expression.

Love how she ended JRE singing this song. My mom used to play her album on car trips when I was a child and has always had a nostalgic happy feel when I heard her songs , but after that podcast I have a whole new appreciation for her. Adding her to all my happy playlist for sure lol

Man, that opening line, "people living their lives for you on TV, they say they're better than you, and you agree." And this was written well before reality TV really took off and before the Kardashians were a thing. This is still a great song, and maybe even more important now.

Any other black person loves Jewel more than me. She has soul in her voice. Love her

Not to mention I had a reason for posting these songs..If you knew me you would know... so please elaborate on your comment so I can respond better.. Thank you

I SMH!
:)
And Im sorry, I thought my response was witty and funny...alas I am still the only person who laughs at my own jokes :)
If that is what "progressives" really did, then I would have joined them. But I don't believe that was ever their long term method of function.
