'8 Passengers' YouTube family appears in court for child welfare hearing

- Kevin Franke and his two adult children arrived and left together with attorneys at a pretrial hearing Tuesday, October 17, 2023 in Provo, Utah in the family's child welfare case.
This stems from the arrest of wife and mother Ruby Franke, who's accused of child abuse.

I hope Kevin does receive some type of child neglect/abandonment charge. Regardless of what his wife or Jody told him to do, he had a duty to ensure the safety and well-being of his children. He failed to do that, bottom line.

@Ad-Lo - that’s exactly what I thought…but when you take into account that just a week or two ago, he wanted Shari arrested, his leaving her behind makes sense. He and his wife are self-centered trash, pure and simple.

He’s a giant piece of crap. He just tried to charge her with theft. Bet you the police had those devices duplicated overnight. They needed Shari to give them to them so they didn’t have to get a search warrant. He will be going to jail after her trial.

Kevin knew exactly what Ruby was doing, I watched them for years. He was right beside her and agreed the entire time. The fact he isn’t being charged is beyond me.
That is speculation yes he had to know that chad lost his bed and that the kids lost Christmas we don't know that he agreed or not. We do not know if he knew the kids lost lunch or if he agreed with it. We do not know that the kids had to make their beds and put laundry in the hampers before they could eat breakfast.
He has not been charged because there is no evidence that he committed a crime. He was in a treatment program with a licensed therapist who told him to stay away from his kids. He was one of many who have come forward. Nothing else reached the level of criminal abuse.

@@tru2deheart. EXACTLY, most of the posters on here are letting their emotions get the best of them. Nothing he did was CRIMINAL, he would be arrested by now if it was. They even had his personal journals, (thanks to his daughter for taking his personal items out of the home) guess there was no evidence in them to find him guilty of anything.
There is no denying that they were crappy parents, what everyone fails to realize is, there was no Crime committed. Hence, why the CPS couldn’t do anything about the multitude of complaints against them. IMO, I believe CPS should have done more, parenting classes, unexpected visitations, something, anything in their power, to at least try to protect those children.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, the only time something was actually done was after the boy escaped from Jodi’s home.
That was the first time actual CRIMES could be fully proven.
Let’s hope that those two women are found guilty on all six felony counts against them.
Then hope that the book is thrown at them, the max allowed is fifteen years per count.
Let’s hope again that the Judge makes them serve all counts consecutively, one after another.
At the very least, IMO, these two should not be released until after the minor aged children are at least twenty five years old..

You are so right, his walk and body language says, “I did nothing wrong”, and I’m entitled to have my kids because I am their father!” I’m sure his attorney wants it to look like the older kids are supporting Kevin, a united front to get the family back together. This really bothers me because of his arrogance, anyone who has put up with Ruby has to have mental health issues too.
Most people in the State of Utah are the same. They are all very, very, competitive with everyone, siblings, neighbors, friends, it’s all a BIG show. Look how good I am, my children are well behaved, I’m dressed in the best designer clothes, my jewelry is more expensive, I have the bigger home, we go on lavish holidays, etc, etc, etc…Everything is a game to them, they are bred, and then groomed, with this ideology, they perform this way their whole lives…It is a sad life, competing for everything, everyone, day in, day out, like good little robots…

@@trishah2145 the lds church leads people to believe that sex is worse than murder and the business not only also helped minors, but was mainly about helping with sex addiction and pornography addiction. I don’t feel it would be too crazy to believe that Jodi influenced all of the siblings because they already were based in a faith that believed MANY of the same things.
I don’t know the full story. The court will have to figure that out. But it wouldn’t be too crazy to believe she could have similar values.
I hope that the youth were able to see that they were being manipulated and groomed to see things as normal and j do think you’re right in that the oldest sibling probably had a better moral compass (all the kids really) than the adults who were supposed to protect them.
I’m glad the children’s privacy is being protected, somewhat. The only thing everyone wants to know is if the kids are okay. Or will be okay. 🙁
This doesn't protect the children. It protects the abusers. Public being informed, so the abusers can not get away with hiding things, and keeping pressure on those in power, is the only protection those kids have other than Shari!

Chad opened one door and Kevin opened the inner door. I really thing they were just trying to get past the press. I think he was trying to deflect the attention off his kids. It worked since the camera focused more on him then them.

They can only do that if they can connect him to a specific incident. The charges are about the condition the kids were found in RECENTLY.
PRIOR to this insolent NOTHING seen on RUclips reached the level of Criminal Child abuse. HOWEVER now that the state has custody those videos will be addressed they will require him have parenting classes and therapy.
Because of his belief in the church and their power to recommend Jodi as a therapist - to question your bishops council is to question the church and to question the church is to question your beliefs. Kevin was so deep in with Jodie’s philosophy, to the extent that when he left his own home under Jodie’s direction, he cut off all ties with his children, and even had to have someone living with him from ConneXtion’s to chaperone him. He wasn’t allowed to even have Chad living with him anymore, that’s how much control Jodie had over him. You don’t just wake up over night from that kind of brainwashing, he needs a lot of deprogramming before he could possibly be considered a fit father again.
So idk if you’ve talked to anyone else who got couciling from Jodie but her whole thing was about shame. Most of the men I know who “separated” from their wives did not so so voluntarily. They were shamed beyond belief and felt like it was the only option. She ruined so many families by doing this. I don’t necessarily thing any of the men shamed for their “porn addictions” actually has any real problems and instead felt powerless and helpless. So it does make me wonder.
I would have a lot of doubts about it being the right thing. And then if I found out my wife was abusing my children when I left the house to save our marriages (which the church encourages us to pick our marriages over our children) I would feel betrayed and angry

That's not true.
He wasn't brainwashed.. his and Ruby's beliefs were already aligned in many ways, with the beliefs and practices that connexions has.
It's not him being brainwashed because he was already participating in behaviors, practices and had a mindset that fit in with them. He didn't have to be molded into something new. What kind of a man abandons his family for 13 months and then had the audacity to ask for custody? He's obviously been deemed incompetent as a parent which has been made clear by the courts decision to give custody to a 21 year old Shari Franke over him.
There's a BIG difference between being brainwashed into a person you aren't and joining a "program" or group that you already have influence on, upon arrival aka basically are an employee for, because it suits your established lifestyle, goals and personal beliefs/standards.
Kevin was accepted by peers and empowered by them. He was not "brainwashed" or heavily changed into a bad parent.

But I think it’ll be great for the court to figure out. It’s always good to have empathy and I think the judge and jury involved will be able to sort it out.
Our country is worthless if we don’t have any trust.
It’s just sad to me with any human to see them get ripped apart on the internet. I think it’s better to analyze what happened and figure out how we can make sure it doesn’t continue to happen.
And then it’s just sad that all of these people were recommended to go see Jodi by their trusted bishops. I’m sure many (and I know many) that were sent to Jodi and felt like something might be off, but continued to go anyways because the church can’t be wrong. I think it’s time members set up a line of how to tell when something isn’t right. It’s really difficult when you ask people to pay attention to their Intuition or still small voice BUT also lead them with any bad feelings about the church or church leadership means it’s satan and that’s incorrect.
The church needs to be more transparent about when it’s okay to question your beliefs. Especially when things get weird. People like Jodi hildebrant, Lori vallow, Tim Ballard, all have a connection to a very strong church. And a church that’s set up for outsiders and insiders to manipulate and use the system to their benefit.
That worthless excuse for abandonment and blocking his own kid and wanting her arrested. That tells you about this man beyond his grabbing his student's arm and throwing a book at another in his class per rate my professor online and trying to push that Connexions garbage on his class. He was way into it without his wife or Jodi present. Yeah, what an example for fatherhood. Spineless without a woman telling him what to do or how to do things. How can he stand on his own and do what's right by his kids? Shari is the strongest adult in that family for the protection of those kids. Kudos to her. I hope they never get to go back to either parent.

I heard somewhere that Kevin didn’t want ruby to go to jail and that’s why he pressed charges 😟 also if I remember correctly, ruby said to Kevin if he wanted to save their marriage then he must separate from them unless ruby contacts him. I looked up that the morman religion is about obeying gods law. Also in an interview they mentioned they control one another so Kevin obeys ruby which is sad cus many people have been calling out her abusive behaviour. All along he obeys an abuser ☹️
I think you are too nice to him calling him spineless. He pushed Ruby to have more children than she wanted. That was discussed between them on the Vlog. I think he is equally complicit. It would be interesting to know exactly what he was up to for that year and a half. He also appeared in promotional videos for ConneXions. He is no puppet, he is a criminal, IMO.

I'm confused. How come the mother who is charged with abuse of these children is even in the courtroom? She shouldn't be allowed to determine or speak on behalf of the childrens wellbeing and custody when there's abuse charges against her for those children. She lost that ability regardless of being the mother by having those allegations against her for the time being. At least that's my math. What am I missing?

You're completely right. That makes zero sense. Of course she's going to say he's fit to care for the kids. She wants them to be raised humiliated, untrusting, in constant fear of underserved consequences. Basically everything a mother SHOULDN'T want for their children. It is unfathomable the way she treated her children.

She is considered innocent until proven guilty. I'm not saying that she is innocent, but all the courts have to treat her as innocent, for now.
It would be awful for someone to be innocent and to have their kids taken away without being able to try to present evidence on their own behalf. I know with this case there is a lot of evidence, but the courts must following the bedrock principles of our legal system.
At this stage of the proceedings they are probably just ensuring that each child has seen a doctor, therapist and dentist or at least has an appointment scheduled. Then they would go through any evidence that the social workers and investigators have found. If Kevin stays out of jail they will then be forming a list of things that he has to do in order to have a chance at custody. The only question that they probably asked Ruby was if she has any native American heritage (if you are a member of a tribe that tribe has the right to be heard during these cases). Beyond that her attorney probably asked for supervised phone calls with the kids, but that would get denied by any judge.
It’s how the court system works. We erode fair elections if the court of public opinion gets to weigh in. How would you like it if your kids were taken but you were innocent? We protect people who are innocent by giving everyone the same process.

Kevin Franke needs to be arrested. I thinks its very FISHY that all these places are protecting ruby Franke. She has no right to privacy. The kids maybe but not her. Also I DONT KNOW why Kevin Franke acts like he is innocent. He needs to nEVER get these kids back.
Its not just to protect her. There are many other inmates and staff that can be put in danger.
The two defendants are lucky that the details are being withheld by the judge.
Only the child welfare case is being sealed. So this pertains only to the custody of the four minor children.
The child abuse case against Ruby and Jodi is not sealed, so the details will be known

Only as it pertains to custody of the minor children at this point. As is usually done in this type of proceedings. The criminal case may have some restrictions as to public information as well . this is to protect the children. Not the defendents.
I'm so glad they closed those proceedings. Those kids deserve privacy. Hope the judge does what's best for them.

Kevin Franke was never anywhere near the bare minimum of what a father should be, so Shari needs to stay away from his manipulative attempts to influence, guilt-trip and pressure her into relinquishing the custody in his favour. If she does, those children are lost.

I like how he timed getting there just right so it would look like he'd be entering with Shari. His daughter, that just the other day, wanted arrested. We're not stupid. Then you really should learn. Many reasons ruby was there. Here's a dew. Arrested does not mean you automatically loose parental rights. Even when convicted unless they are removed by the court she can still legally be present for all concerns and decisions. Unknown yet why Kevin was not charged.
@@eileenmcdonald1599 appreciate your input. However, she is being charged with a horrific crime against children. Some of her RUclips videos were awful. She could have appeared by video. Saved the taxpayers money having to transport her. Plus, I think of Shari and Chad and how difficult it had to be to see her, I’m sure they experienced some pretty awful situations. Even though they are over 18 that still had to be very difficult for them. Her personality seems pretty intimidating. I would hope in the future the children would be put first and Ruby and Kevin can take all those millions she bragged about making on RUclips and pay for all those children to have specialized counseling, and help Shari with the two children with her.
I’m still waiting for them to press charges against Kevin as well. The guy is at best neglectful and at worst complicit of child abuse. Lock him out and keep those kids away from any of their abusers.

Just because they are at the same place the same time does not mean they are together. They each have their own attorneys.
What's the difference between the child welfare case hearing and the child abuse case hearing?
Welfare is about custody. Abuse is criminal.
Where I'm from a child welfare case can only be instigated by the child protection agency and it is heard by a family court/child protection judge. A child abuse case is in criminal court.
The child abuse case will be against Ruby and Jodi. The child welfare case is trying to figure out who should currently get the four minor children. Obviously, Ruby won't get them but Kevin has not been in the home for over a year and didn't have contact with his kids, plus there is evidence from their YT channel of him participating in some of the emotional/mental abuse that can be used against him. The eldest daughter has the two older minors and the younger minors (last heard) were not with any family and were in state care (that could have changed since then). They have to see if Kevin is even fit to take the four younger children into his custody.

If anyone is responsible to take care of the kids, it’s Shari. I obviously don’t know her in person, but if you think Kevin is innocent he is not. Still can’t fathom how he wanted Shari arrested for entering their home.

Sherri and Chad are both very intelligent and mature young adults. Sherri can take care of herself easily which I firmly believe she has bee for YEARS.
It should be made public in order to keep the courts from bias.
In my state any court that has to do with Minors is always sealed. I was shocked to learn it wasn't in Utah. We will see Ruby moved or not. The police records wouldn't be sealed so if they issue a warrant we would see that on the police side.

This meeting really didn't have anything to do wth ruby. It was to speak with the judge and have evidence given to the judge from not just the parents but social services and those that have seen the children and their physical and mental status.
