Hank Aaron, Bob Uecker, and Joe Torre all played here in my hometown of Eau Claire, WI as part of the Eau Claire Bears (later named Eau Claire Braves) in the minor leagues at Carson Park stadium. There's a statue of Hank Aaron in front of the stadium that was put up in the 90s. Hank Aaron returned here for the unveiling and it was quite the spactacle (video of the day can be found on RUclips). There is a great book about Aaron's time spent in Eau Claire called A Summer Up North; it's worth a read for any baseball fan. If you're ever in the area it's worth the effort to try and catch a game at Carson Park. It's a great old stadium in a unique park (being built on peninsula, surrounded by a beautiful park and small oxbow lake. It feels like the good-ol days watching games there. The Eau Claire Express of the Northwoods League play collegiate baseball there now. Wonderful history and atmosphere that can't be found at most modern parks.
We have a statue of Hammerin Hank in front of our ballpark here in Eau Claire WI. He played on the minor league team here , the Eau Claire Bears, in 1952. Greatest player in major league history when you consider his accomplishments in spite of the way he was treated…… The Marvel that is Bob Uecker says so…..
I just stumbled on this vid tonight. Had to say I got to see Hank Aaron hit a home run in the Houston Astrodome and I'll never forget it. I have never seen anyone hit a homerun like him because all he did was flick the bat with his wrists.
Hank Aaron and Bob Uecker, two of baseball's greatest representatives. Aaron with his talent, humility and dignity. Uecker for, ummm, his friendship with Hank Aaron. 😁 Seriously, as mentioned before, a National treasure. Both he and Hank were/are.
When I was a kid, we couldn't get the games on radio or tv unless they were carried by one of the major networks. But they always had the daily box scores in our local paper. Aaron, Mays, Mantle, Maris, Duke Snyder, the BROOKLYN Dodgers. Then the Viet Nam war came, I enlisted in the USAR, college, marriage, jobs. I never had time for it after I grew up.
Mario Bonilla Uecker's absurd sense of humor at work there. Incidentally, when I just typed his name, spellcheck notified me it was wrong. That's the sort of lasting cultural impression Bob made.
When he showed up to play for the Norfolk Clowns as a slap hitting shortstop, they saw his reversed hands. They immediately changed it-- and he became the best power hitter of all time. Shows you how much instruction he had had as a kid-- none.
Some of the greats arrived at the pro level quite green or lacked Baseball I.Q. but we're so great physically and mentally they picked up the game before too many realized their shortcomings. I heard a great Larry Walker story (MTL, COL, STLC): Canadian born hockey goalie through much of his youth was actually much better at Baseball. When he got to COL he became one of the games' best baserunner's but when he got to the minor leagues he was rough. One time he was on first with less than 2 outs and took off on a hit-and-run on a lazy fly ball to the outfield he was halfway around second about 2/3 of the way to 3rd when he realized the ball was gonna be caught so he needed to get back to first base. The legal play is to go back to 2nd and re-tag and then straight to 1st but he took the more direct illegal straight shot across the infield near the pitchers mound. He was ruled out for his "cheating." Never did that again. Funny when you don't know the rules! I think he was 18 or 19 when that happened.
Aaron is known as the home run king, but not as well known is that he was a lifetime .305 hitter with a lifetime .374 OBP. And that's including his last two years with the Brewers when he was pretty awful (although he still drew walks).
Bob Ueker playing on the same team as Hank Aaron. Only baseball can do that. That's the charm of baseball. I wish the younger generation would see this. Yes I know I sound like a grumpy old man lol.

Crosshanded hitting thing is a bit of a myth. By the time Henry got signed he was using his hands correctly. It does however burnish the tales of why his wrists and forearms were so powerful. I read a story many years ago that noted Aaron’s forearms and wrists were bigger than Muhammad Ali’s.
Big Colt.....That was part of his "shtick", to make himself incidental. Bob's lifetime batting average of 200, would fit in perfectly with today's baseball.
Bob Ueker is a national treasure
More than that, Bob Uecker is an American institution.
I could listen to Bob Uecker talk baseball all day...

I watch and listen to Bob and laugh every time!

I saw Aaron hit HR #693 in Los Angeles against Al Downing. Then a month or two later he hit #715 off Al Downing in Atlanta.
No he didn't. He hit #715 the following season.

Exactly, Hank himself talked about hitting cross handed as a kid playing stick ball and practicing hitting soda bottle caps with a broom stick.
