- After spending 7 days driving across Turkey I wanted to share a full guide on what its like renting a car in Turkey as a Foreigner. These are the top things you must know if you plan to rent a car in turkey, as a few things are different for foreigners. Driving on the highways of turkey I learned a few important things regarding; tolls, police, parking, rental process, who to rent from, and how much will it cost you. I rented a car in Istanbul for 4 days from a local conpany (Carpay) in sisli and apparently they have withdrawn the safety deposit money from my CC and never returned which I randomly found out a month later when I was checking my bank statement. Any clue where to complain this???the amount is about 400usd

Can I rent without cc?
I rented a car through Carla car rental app - compared all companies. Much cheaper compared to other websites and way cheaper than renting on the spot. It was $40/day for a full-size car - Skoda Superb. Turkey is a fantastic country and easy to travel by car.
How much deposit do i need to pay?
40 a day is to much for turkey should cost a maximum of 10 per day

Last time we rented a car in Antalya it was only 300 Lira/day, which is about 22 usd now and probably around 35 usd back in the summer. Hyundai i20. But they do charge extra if it’s more than 170km/day

Very helpful. At the end of this video you mentioned about the traffic lights. Here in Canada they have upgraded almost all traffic lights like that, amber in the middle and countdowns. It reduces accidents because you can start to slow down when you see a few seconds left for it to turn red.
Renting car is a good idea, its easier to go around and save money

We are going In September to Alanya and hiring a car. Prices are pretty good and petrol is cheap. Cheaper than UK.

Turn on hazard light while driving straight isn't a law in Indonesia. It just a habit. In fact some people feels that those action is against the law about usage of hazard lamp

I rented a full size passenger van thru Expedia for $45 a day for 5 days, $10 full coverage a day insurance.

Here in the UK we have had red, amber and green traffic lights since they were invented.
We have red, yellow, green in the States as well, naturally, but when cars have been sitting at a red light and can then proceed, the light simply clicks from red to green straight off, without passing through yellow again.
1:25 fyi fuel in turkey costs right now around 20 liras
i just rented the same car from Antalya from Cizgi at 21 USD per day. Always book online or they will charge you extra.
You probably rented off peak, we rented during mid summer peak season

I came from the “How Affordable is İstanbul in 2021” video. I dropped a question there and said I would come here to ask one more question...
As a foreigner (American) who will live in Turkey with my fiancé from İstanbul, is it a good idea just to ship my car from the US to Turkey (we have to pick it up in İzmir) or rely on taxis, public transportation and rentals? Trying to save money in the long run.
Plus, when I used to live in Germany twice with my parents, they always had our family car shipped from the US. Your thoughts.

taxis are pretty affordable when its not rush hour, at that time there are no taxis. rental is going to cost probably around $40 usd a day so kind of expensive in my opinion, but overall theres a lot of public transport. we just didn't have time to try it out
@@alexandwhite Thank you again. I see public transportation is very affordable (I am sure prices are better off season). Cars are very expensive to buy in Turkey... especially foreign cars (import tax I guess).

a lot has changed. i was there this feb 24 and paid $183 for 7 days including drop off at istanbul airport. all tolls were paid electronically directly reported to rental company

sorry for the late reply, the hotel we stayed at was Melrose Suites in Pamukkale. If you find the hotel, the fairground is just across from it
A Disclaimer for those who rent cars or buy cars in turkey, there is a small sticker that is placed behind the rear view mirror, if you do not find one, you can go the ptt and buy one and fill it up with credit, it's required for travel to other cities. If you dont get it theres a chance you might get a fine.
Hi Alex. Thanks a lot for informative vlog. I have a doubt. Is it possible to put some cash as a deposit or necessary credit card to be used. I heard some people complaining deposits were not refunded while using credit card. Thanks in advance
It is better to use well known companies in order to be in safe side. Some bad apples in the country may try to extra charge you, try to rip. Better to make full insurance, as a local I also do it like that. If planning to visit many cities across the country it is better to rent a car, but if you are going to spend many days in a city like İstanbul no need to rent a car in İstanbul, you can use public transport.

It’s been over a month and I haven’t received my deposit back. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.
I’m really disappointed. I paid for the rental car and showed all respect to the company and the people whose working there but this is what I get in return.
They told me that it takes two working weeks and I talk to them after two weeks and said it will take another two weeks.
Extremely disappointed.
I thought deposit is not required if you rent with Cizgi?
Hi. I recently went for a holiday and rented a car in Dalaman, turkey. The company is called right cars. The rental car company turned out to be an absolute scam. They did not follow conditions written in the rental confirmation email. Instead of blocking the deposit they charged the actual credit card. Secondly, they charged a higher deposit of 900 Eur instead of Eur 650 written in contract. Thirdly, they charged in turkish lira using an exchange rate of their choice. It was 11pm at night and i had no option so I went along. Now I read their reviews online that they will do everything to avoid giving the deposit back. What are my options?

This was actually the cheapest economy car at that time during peak season. Other companies certainly have smaller size vehicles for cheaper depending on availability

overall great service and car was new. We just picked the first rental company we saw at the airport. We've gotten comments on the video that we were charged way too much ($55/day i think is what we paid don't remember). But we didn't have reservation so if you book in advance i'm sure you can find cheaper.

sorry for the late reply haha, it was honestly just the first rental place we saw at the airport. Overall good service, from what other locals/travelers told me that was a super high price we got quoted (but it was peak summer season)

Where did you get your international drivers license just in case. I plan on going at the end of April this year:
AAA (triple a) in america you just go in and for like $25 you can get your license converted to international license.

I got my international license through Triple A road side service right in their office and it was good for 1 year and I think it was 30 dollars. This was done in the USA.

Being an American, all I've ever driven is an automatic. So, I too would be interested in knowing if an automatic rental car is easy to find. I understand that in Europe, most cars are manual transmission.

no, you just need to be over 25 if you want to get a good rate. Otherwise your insurance is super high for the car as they don't consider you an experienced driver
