Slight spoiler- link gets exactly 1 spoken line in this game, a first for the series. 1he sacrifices himself at the end to save zelda, getting atabbed by ganon. In his dying breath, link utters "fuck that hurts", making it also the first time in the series where the word "fuck" is spoken.
Dont ask me how i know this

I completely agree, pretty much -
My first time playing BOTW is littered with amazing memories. I just had such a fun time exploring the world, learning where things were, finding stuff... I didn't use a weapon to begin with, I just brought some giant metal door I had found in some ruins with me everywhere and bashed enemies with that. My first blood moon happened the first night off the plateau for me, so I thought it was some scripted thing that was trying to kill me, so I ran for cover when the sky turned red. The novelty of the dungeons being controlled by their maps like they were made up for the lack of theming, and that kinda goes for the entire game - the novelty of experiencing it all new for the first time made up for the shortcomings. I've found that each subsequent play through has only been a slightly worse experience each time, and every time I play through it it becomes more of a chore and less fun. Without the focus on story, music, and replayability that the other Zelda games have, which have been sacrificed for exploration and discovery, playing through it again both lacks the magic of what made it special, being the "everything's new" side, and lacks the magic of what made more traditional Zelda games special, being the themed dungeons, music, story, and all the rest of it. I won't forget how amazing the first time I played through it was, and it holds a special place in my heart even still, but it hasn't aged as well as other Zelda games imo, and I'm really hoping that TOTK fixes those problems. Especially if they're going to take forever to release the next Zelda game after it - I need something to sustain myself!

In my honest opinion, I’m perfectly glad Breath of the Wild came out the way it came out because it was the first game they truly broke away from the Ocarina of Time formula and reinvented the original roots of the NES game in a more modern experience. It wasn’t perfect obviously, I do agree with the aesthetic repetition and that the dungeons felt like an afterthought, but the design of the open world is magnificent and I’m grateful for all the hours spend finding all of its secrets and quests and characters.
And I’m grateful Tears of the Kingdom will be able to give us a new experience in this world, while returning back to some of the more well known aspects of the Zelda series, including its story driven nature and of course the dynamic dungeons. I love Zelda dungeons alright?
Good retrospective, and I’m excited to get to this game with my new Skyward Sword Joy Con controllers.

Damn you really hit the nail on the head with how I feel about botw, I adored it first time through but replaying it is nowhere near the same thing, replay ability has always been very important to me. When it came to between odyssey and botw, I adore odyssey and I've played it several times, it's just more mechanically interesting and not focused on discovery as breath of the wild is. I'm excited for the new game but I probably won't pick it up on launch. Loved the new format for a more podcasty setting, great vid bud and I will bring this line up for years to come "I then turned to my 14 year old girlfriend"

Breath of the Wild was one of my favorite game launch experiences ever. I honestly havent gone back to it since around those first few months after launch, but im looking forward to Tears of the Kindgom since i havent played any zelda games in that window between games, and that has got me feeling nostalgic for the way i felt when first playing botw.
My first zelda game was skyward sword near its release date, crazy that game is already over 10 years old!
Watching all the youtube theory videos and videos on the older zelda games i played in my childhood has got me super excited for this Friday 😁

I am one of the few people who actually disliked BotW. I've been playing Zelda since the 90s and - given, I've not played every single Zelda interactive experience 😋 - I have always loved Zelda. My favourite, without a doubt, was and always will be: Twilight Princess!
I'm not a purist, I am open to changes. However, in my opinion BotW was simply a bad game (yeah, hate me 😁). I disliked the Open World which felt soooo incredibly empty to me, I disliked the story, which was soooo incredibly thin and weak, considering how bloated the game play is.
Personally, I'm also not a fan of the design/art work. I will always love the looks of TP most. There are so many more reasons why I didn't enjoy BotW (breaking weapons one of the biggest reasons), but I'm part of a minortiy. I've experienced to be insulted and ridiculed when I voiced my opinion, but I stand by it.
Loved your podcast! And found you back then with your TP video, which I still enjoy every few months, it's one of my all time favourite Zelda videos here on RUclips.
Keep up the good work 😊

Great video snugboy 😃 but I have some thoughts!!
first of all, YOU ARE SOOO CUTE LIKE LITERALLY SO PRECIOUS AHHHHH!!!!! this video format is very entertaining!!! I really enjoy seeing your face and hearing your opinions!
however, your opinion on the durability in the game SUCKS!!!!! terrible. wrong. bad. durability is great and I’m so glad they brought it back for totk. also I really like the music in botw 🤭 I think they nailed it. I think it really captures the feel of the game. also hearing the music in the background of your video made me so 🥴
I think you’re right, they should’ve switched up the shines, I did find them rather boring. BUT YOU DIDN’T LIKE THE BATTLE SHRINES????? THOSE ARE THE BEST ONES!!!!!! I love that shot of dopamine I get from dodging just right and getting to perform a flurry rush and absolutely spamming that Y button.
I did not like the story. it was very good, but too scattered and felt too disconnected from the game. also zelda didn’t feel like a real character which frustrated me. if the player had been able to interact with her, even just once outside of a cutscene, I think that would’ve made her character feel more real and whole.
I completely agree with your ending thoughts tho. the game definitely has flaws. but I still love it and it’s the reason I got into zelda in the first place so it’ll always have a special place in my heart. I really hope totk fixes some of the problems everyone had with botw tho. my hopes are high for this upcoming game!!!!
side note: I CALLED IT!!!! I CALLED GANONDORF BEING HOT AND YOU ALL BULLIED ME AND NOW HERE WE ARE.

This game is very very special to me, so I kinda have a bias towards it I’m not gonna lie. But your opinions are valid, really I’ve only had 2 problems with the game that have stuck, the dungeons, and the bosses, mostly Dark Beast Ganon. I genuinely enjoy everything else, the story is great IMO, though I understand how it lacks the emotional impact for a lot of people due to how the game is designed, it basically spoils the whole story before it starts, which is really the main issue with it IMO. As for replay value I apologize but I have to STRONGLY disagree, I’d say that for games like Spider-Man PS4 or Ghost of Tsushima, as there’s really only one way to do things, but every time I’ve started BOTW over I find a new way to go through the great plateau, a different direction, a different shrine order, this game is PACKED to the BRIM with content at every corner and I think that’s what makes it so perfect in my eyes (besides the Zelda bias) I’m currently going through the games main quests with 3 hearts, which is pretty challenging 😂. I plan to beat Calamity Ganon tomorrow then head on over that night to finally pick up a game I’ve waited 6 years to play. See you on the other side.

I was a year or two late to BoTW. Borrowed it from my uncle, but had to give it back halfway through.
A few years later, I finally got my own Switch (bc TotK), and replayed it. I still wasn't the biggest fan of it, but I was truly stoked for its sequel.
    Then I got the sequel.
And it was a lot of fun...
    For a few weeks.
    Man...
I did beat TotK. Story-wise, it is probably in the top 5 of all-time, with the best ending sequence of all of them, imo.
That said, I don't think I will ever play it again.
The best part of it is the storyline, as well as the funny things people make.
But the execution of the storyline really makes it a drag too. The non-linear method did not work efficiently.
I am grateful for it, but, man, if you think BotW is too much "stuff," just wait until you are bombarded with a lot of...stuff.

love this format and I thought I was the only one who remembered the first time playing BOTW. At the time, I was 18, and honestly, not that interested in video games. Anime was where I was at at the time. but then I go to my boyfriend's (at the time) house, and he says, "yo have you played Breath of the Wild?" all I did up to that point was watch the trailers, but I didn't have a switch cause I was a poor college student 🥲 I won't forget playing through the Great Plateau, it was my first taste of an open-world game and I was in awe... only to leave the Plateau, and get my ass kicked by a Moblin 🥲
I'm with you tho, the story was lacking. And that's what I like about Zelda games. the trailer does look super promising, however I am keeping my guard up, I don't want to be severely disappointed if the game doesn't reflect the trailer... again.

I like the open world setting but after 50h of running around exploring and picking mushrooms I get bored and quit. So far it happened twice with BotW and once with TotK and they are my only uncompleted zelda games. 😅 Ok so over both my BotW runs I've finished the four main quests so it's not like I did nothing but maybe next time I should start where I left off and actually venture into the castle because I severely miss dungeons in this game. (I also need to kick the ass of the lynel that killed my first horse.) I looove the exploring part but my brain can't do progression unless it's spoonfed to me apparently.

Skyward Sword? Faron Woods? Heck, even other open world type of games like Pokemon S/V and Sonic Frontiers were able to give us actual music with the piano, instead of someone randomly hitting two keys every couple of seconds.

However I eventually found myself feeling the same way about the game as you. It's lacking in replay value, and I'm not a big fan of how they've far they've moved from the traditional Zelda formula. Which is insane because I have never played skyward sword. But I think the reason why is because I was obsessed with Ocarina Of time as a kid, and skyward sword seems to have a similar magical element and storytelling. I never got that magical feeling of nostalgia when looking back at Botw. It was magical when playing thru the 1st time but its missing something...
