  • Pulsars. The galaxy is loaded with them. For the Stargate Universe plot of "Incursion Part 2", the team needed a stellar "bad guy" which behaved in a certain way. They wrote it. They filmed it. Later, it was discovered in our galaxy to be a real thing. Only several billion light years off, right?

      @@tinamoul Granted, there's not much basis for hyperdrives, artificial gravity, or wormholes. The cool thing about this is that the first instance of a "black widow" pulsar, classified PSR B1957+20, was discovered in 1988 but I doubt that any of the people involved in Stargate were aware of it. The thing about that fact that is cool to me is that even without being aware of an actual instance of the stellar phenomenon they were coming up with, the science people could devise an idea that was completely plausible using what they _did_ know. And then it turns out to be real, as a bonus. ^_^

    • @danielrhouck
      @danielrhouck 2 года назад +4

      The 1988 one doesn’t seem to work as described, though; the pulsar seems to be a full-time pulsar. I can’t find the one they’re actually talking about that has a six-minute cycle.

      I came up with a similar idea for a sci-fi concept and got stuck at the same problem - the pulsar beam iterating too quickly. Never resolved the issue, so finding out that this is a possibility in some systems is amazing.

      @@mischarowe yes it's mostly a lack of knowledge and imagination. Visionaries of all time associate science and imagination to think and theorized crazy new ideas relatively to their time. Nowdays hard science has become some sort of cult or religion where scientists will not admit something they can't explain is actually possible and/or true... We need grounded imagination to evolve

    • @mischarowe
      @mischarowe 2 года назад +3

      @@clairep5130 Where did you get the idea that "hard science" is some cult or religion?.
      The whole point of science is that it's a tool to figure out the natural world. In the scientific mind, it's just that they don't claim something as real or possible if there's nothing to compare it to.
      In order to figure out if something is possible you need to demonstrate the plausibility. Wild ideas are thrown around all the time - the whole point of coming up with new hypothesis to test (therefore science) REQUIRES imagination. But if you're unable to demonstrate something it just remains a hypothesis and not theory. (It would be unprofessional to say X is possible if they can't explain HOW, after all.) It's entirely reasonable to not claim something is true or possible without anything to back it up.
      And unlike something supernatural or magic, science IS grounded in reality. Because it's the best tool we have to figure things out. Unless it gets replaced by something else later that works much better, it's simply the only way to find truths, for now.
      I'm not sure that you understand the scientific method if this is your take on it. Where did you get this "cult or religion" idea from?
      Also, while science doesn't claim things as fact, it also can demonstrate impossibilities. When a scientist is saying "that's not possible", they're referring to the plausibility according to known physics. Science changes our understanding of the universe every day. And no scientist worth their salt will claim we know everything.
      To say it's a cult or religion is to not understand it at all.

    • @clairep5130
      @clairep5130 2 года назад +2

      @@mischarowe wow relax I meant it because many of my friends but also people on the internet reffer for example to the laws of physics as absolute and ultimate, and would not even imagine them to be relative or incomplete or just wrong. While we actually dont know and maybe cant know. They proved to be held by simili-dogmatic beliefs, disregarding any serious discussion outside of their scope of comprehension, showing a very sad lack of imagination. Same goes in Archeology for example. When findings and discoveries shake our whole paradigm and scientists reject it at first. It's just the way it is but thank the cosmos all scientists are not like that... it's just something I noticed more and more, especially about archeology and ufology, I am sure you see why and what I am talking about. And if not it means you may be one of them ^^

    Two of Stargate's strengths are that it took science seriously and tried to be plausible and realistic; and that it took the military and the space agencies seriously and tried to portray them realistically, with internal differences of opinion, realistic people, rather than as a caricature or a villain, but as hard-working, smart, dedicated people usually. Stargate could play fast and loose with things, but it also did try to be grounded, and it nearly always remembered that character matters more than plot points or fancy effects; character drives the plot points. -- I loved the ep where they have to escape from a planet too near a black hole, and nearly endanger Earth from the black hole's effects seeping through the gate. They find a way to defeat it by being smart, using their heads. -- Other episodes like this throughout the three series.

    "It all ties together, AHH!" oof that hurts a bit since SG:U only teased what Dr Rush was uncovering before ending with no resolution.

    • @blasterman789
      @blasterman789 2 года назад

      What Rush discovered was that Destiny housed the secret of transcendence of the Ancients. His discovery of patterns in the microwave background was a fore shadow of this. Unfortunately this was never quite fleshed out before the season ended but was certainly a reveal in season 3. This was why Rush came off like a neurotic douchebag and likely why so many aliens were targeting destiny. The mere knowledge that Destiny contained the potential to turn corporeal beings into god's was too dangerous for the other crew to be even made aware of although Rush was coming to the conclusion Eli would eventually put the bread crumbs together. This paints a total different picture of why Rush was so erratic and paranoid at times and his actual motivations. Caryle's performance was brilliant and the writing was brilliant. The cancelation of season 3 was criminal.

      I’ll be honest, here; I *loved* the commentary tracks on SG-1, because it was very, very rarely the actors; it was special effects people, or filming crew… all the “behind the camera”-folks who makes the magic actually happen, at it was always incredibly interesting. :)

    Nobody gets into their franchise as much as the Stargate staff. Trek is a distant second.
    I remember interviews with Amanda Tapping where she talked about correcting the script for accuracy.
    Richard Dean Anderson and Christopher Judge apparently show up in SG gear at airsoft games.

  • @blasterman789

    SG-U was the only series in the franchise that could br called true Science Fiction, and season 2 was breathtaking in its scope and vision. Unfortunately SG-U had a fatal flaw - it was smarter than its audience.

    Case in point, Gargantua (Interstellar Black Hole). Most Astrophysicists were so sure that's not how it would look like... until just recently. LOL
    Edit: It's instances like these. The Black Widow Pulsar, Gargantua, etc... that really leads me to believe that stars are the white holes we're looking for, and that (from the outside perspective) it may actually be very possible to drop into a black hole without getting all spaghettified.

    I read a book once, I'm pretty sure it was Footfall by Larry Nivens where he had a character say "Necessity isn't the mother of invention, the Sci-Fi writer is". Someone writes something in a book or movie script and later someone reads it and says I think I can make that work. Now we have cell phones and laptops like Star Trek had and after Voyage Home some engineer was playing around and melted Aluminum Oxide powder and created the first transparent Aluminum that the air-force is using for helmet visors and windshields now. Not to mention that the military has crude medical tricorders for field medics and laser scalpels.

    Hey, when you record these bits, is your audio and the guest audio being tracked separately? It would be cool if you mute yourself in post while the guest is talking. It's super distracting listening to your breathing. You could also use a noise gate live to mute yourself when not actually talking if you have that capability.

Good news is however that they currently are in intergalactice transit in cryosleep, so if the series is ever picked up again, they can just continue the story line.
