Anyone listening in 2023...Paul is the best FOREVER. Paul remains one of the best harmonica players, just real talent. RIP Paul..🙏💔😥
One of the greats. A real Legend.
met Paul backstage on a Tuesday $1.00 night @ The Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco...he had a whole slew of harmonicas laid out on the table in front of him and he turned and sked me if i'd take care of 'em for a little bit - he had some business to take care of..so i did...he was gone for a while...man what a night !!..i was sitting between Albert King and Freddie King...this all mut've rubbed off on me somehow 'cause believe me i can make my Telecaster cry da Blues......Paul was a real person, down to earth and easy going guy...we love you Paul...
Man, for a great lineup for a band, this is shit.....
What an honor that must have been.!!
WoW 👌 😂
Happy days
Those moments/memories.....priceless
@@parisofmauiI’m sensing a bit of skepticism in your comment 🤔
fntastic
Most people tell me Butterfield's Walking Blues ain't bad. Its one of the best versions we most ever had....
It is THE version for me, I heard it in the 60's no one else has ever come close
None Better
Walking Blues aren’t bad but they can be misunderstood. It’s everything Paul said it was, just like you know it should
Clever😁👍xx
@@sandragriffiths9692 saw them in the 60s I have the album
Man Buzz really stole the show. Have been watching this video ever once in a while for 9 years, and every time it gives me chills
63 years young here, of course I heard of this artist when I was growing up, but never explored his stuff until today for some reason, and all I got to say here is...... !!!!! HOLY SHIT !!!!!!.... to think I could have gone through life and missed this...I want more...and more...and more and MORE....WOW
There is a lot mire around...enjoy.....you definitely will😁
Check out rory gallagher. Im 70 and only found him 6 years ago on youtube and i love music. He really pulled me out of a lethargy and languish i was experiencing at the time. You know. There is nothing new or impressive….that seen it all and what the hell did i ever do? So ive been forcing myself paint because my mood persists a little. Its average to good and i can do likeness better than some. I thank rory for the inspiration to just keep trying or the other start dying
@@cynthiamarston2208 Im glad you started trying again Cynthia. I have to do the same. God bless you.
Paul Butterfield remains one of the best harmonica players . I saw him back in the day at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach with his original band including the late , great Mike Bloomfield . What a show. I taught myself harmonica, and have been playing ever since. RIP Paul.
Man, what I’d have done to see the original butterfield blues band!
What year did you see him at the Bear? I worked there in 71 & 72. Unfortunately I didnt get to see him.
@@arlenesheffield1136 My father was their road manager and took me to the Golden Bear in August of 1971 for a sound check. Sometimes I Just Feel Like Smilin’ was being released at that time. You were probably there. What did you do there?
@@jackmeyer4280 I was a waitress.
I guess im asking randomly but does anybody know a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the account password. I would love any assistance you can offer me.
best I've ever heard
Saw the band at a concert in Ottawa, Canada. They backed up Iron Butterfly. All the young kids who came to see Iron Butterfly were blown away by Paul and his band. Miss him..
Just wow never get tired of listening to Paul Butterfield always enjoyed his music
The GREAT Paul Butterfield🎶💯🎶
HE WAS THE MAN. His vocals were amazing as well. My first and foremost influence
My harmonica HERO !!! RIP PAUL, still listening, still playing, people often tell me I sound like you! The best compliment I ever get, love you Bro!
Peter Atanasoff on rhythm gtr and Buzz Feiten on lead guitar! My buds!
The best!
Awesome
A real talent....died way too soon!!! RIP PB
so true ! rest in peace
Paul Butterfield lived life with a passion for blues and his friends
Just too utterly, unbelievably good! I wish there was killer music like this being made today!
Never heard of guitarist Buzz Feiten (hoped I spelled that correctly) but holy moly can he ever play! Makes it look so effortless.....
Just another Players Player Guitarist that mainsteam mass missed...for lack of PR...there's plenty still out there...reason it's important to support the 'local' hot dogs...

Wow. Raw Butterfield Blues, deiivered right from the Gut. Nothing better.
OH, my God, I loved this man....he had it. Son of a B. died way to young...
The good ones usually do. Unfortunate. This guy was the best blues harp player ever.
In my (soon ending journey), all I wanted was, to ring like butter. Bongogypsey.
Oh how I miss this.
When a man can take a harp, an instrument that can fit in the palm of your hand, and front an entire band and compete with horn sections imo like nobody else could, that's a force to be reckoned with.
Thank God we have some live footage of this genius!
I saw him in 1965 or 1966. I wasn't old enough to get in the door, but I was able to buy a fake driver's license for $20 bucks. My best friend was yelling so loud that they asked him to settle down. after his set Paul went to the bar , and was drinking beer with everybody. He was down to earth, and wasn't trying to act like a big shot. Everybody was blown away. His original band had Sam Lay on drums, Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar, and Elvin Bishop on rhythm guitar. Forgot who was playing bass.
jerome arnold
A real talent
These were the days,my friends. I seen these guys at the golden Apple in Detroit area...I thought I was cool....I was cool!
carrying on with their good old blues rock , as if funk, glam, prog, disco, reggae or punk had not existed yet in 1978
WOW
Just fabulous! Thank God it was captured on video!
Chicago boys.........oh those "Chicago Blues". James Cotton, Junior Wells, Charlie Musselwhite and don't forget Howlin' Wolf. One time or another, heard all these great Blues harp players.
Paul Butterfield was the first to really bridge Blues , Rock, and Jazz. That was followed by the beginning of the English blues bands like John Mayall,, Yardbirds, and Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood Mac started out as a blues band with the great Peter Green on lead guitar.
I think your chronology is a bit dodgy. According to Wikipedia PB career started 1963, Mayall 1956. I haven't looked up dates for the Yardbirds but Fleetwood Mac started with Peter Green when Green left Mayall and he was Clapton's replacement in the Bluesbreakers.
@@jolyonstone4942 I think that Larry's chronology is accurate, definitely in terms of recording. The Butterfield Blues Band LP predates the Mayall/Clapton Bluesbreakers LP.
I mention these records because, although there are earlier recordings, it was on these two LPs that for both artists really nailed it.
And who can forget Christine McVie was a solid blues vocal and keyboards with Stan Webb's Chicken Shack.
John mayall would be his counterpart for sure
The best harmonica player in the world to this day.
Without a doubt. An incredible harp player. He's one of the reason's I still have a record player; The Paul Butterfield Blues Band have to be experienced on LP at least once 😎. Butter's album - 'East/West' is a masterpiece.
This man...is the reason I kept player harp from age 8...I don’t know If I should love him or hate him lol. But seriously, Butter is The Best harp ever known. And I’ll keep on playing as long as I can.
Little Walter
Yes, to me he was the best. It was Paul Butterfield that turned me on to the harmonica in my teens.
Hoe je bek
I miss him!
Love it
Jesus. Simply awesome.
Saw Paul Butterfield the first time at the Avalon Ballroom in the fall of 1968 in San Francisco.
I was there to, never will forget this concert. Only Charlie Musselwhite was as good but different in style.
Bruce Seibert Bruce! Man...though I’m happy for you to have seen The..Paul Butterfield I’m incredibly jealous! See, that era was the era of real music. I feel like I was “jipped” having been born in the early 70’s. Lol, but that’s awesome. So much good music & musicians then. Now, it’s karaoke and “DJ night” with drum machines etc taking over.
I was there too! Sat on the back of the couch to the left of the stage!
Oh YES ! I saw Butterfield @ the Avalon too! He was incredible ***
Paul was a great guy and talented. I used to live in Marin Co. in 1967 I met Paul at a friends older brother house on the Petaluma river. Weeere at my buddies brothers house. In walks paul, we started talkin and Paul pulled out his harp looked at me and said how would u like to play. I about shit my pants Hell yeah. He started playing then wipped out another harp handed it to me and said this is how you hold it and this is how u bend the reeds. Paul was playing that weekend at Fillmore West and came up to see his buddy I was very lucky I’ve played on and off ever since. Couldn’t take my guitar to Nam so I brought my harp ..lol.
Butterfield......best Harp player I ever seen. RIP
Little Walter was the best ever.I would think even Butterfield would acknowledge that.
He was well aware of it and studied Little Walter
Not to diss either, but Big Walter 'Shakey' Horton could outplay the pair of them. Check him out.
Shakey was brilliant in his own right, but they were all different and we all like who we like but I doubt he could outplay them but he was easily as good as them.Tastes I suppose bloggy.Jim.Liverpool.
In a class by himself on harp.:)
Masterpiece!
Blues Power !
Greetings from Hungary!
In Bloomfields Bio, he tells wonderful - funny - entertaining stories of Butterfield, he was a bad ass young man...
Paul Butterfield the man who took it to the next level.....Little Walter to Butterfield,,, who could match then today,,,,,,,,,,,me
I've got that one covered !
Elven Bishop for a while.

Big inspiration to so many harp players.
First blues album I ever bought!
Yes
After Little Walter the best harp player so far.
Great stuff, right on.
Early Butterfield band (with the 3 Bs) circa '66, best band I ever saw, (IMHO) and I've seen all the big boys.
& what a voice to boot!
This is the man that gave me my harmonica education to this day i prefer Paul's style
of playing blues .Love and miss Paul Butterfield .
this is little walter's song and paul always gave back,
I thought this wuz Robert Johnson's tune...
J Jukeboy hey brother, I met Paul in Novato Ca 1969, he was playing that weekend at the Fillmore West and came out to novato to see a buddy of his who happened to be my friends older brother. Paul turned me on to the harp..in person ..very great full ...to bad Michael Bloomfield stayed in Frisch that night it was a moment I will never forget ....
J Jukeboy right on
This is the best stuff I've heard all my life and I hope I can hear it some more before I die
Proper music.
Great
Good shit!
High quality here. Outstanding video.
Super, grat!
Buzz Feiten on guitar. Same guy who designed the Feiten tuning system. Makes the guitar more in tune. Mike Fuller and I went to see him about 15 years ago at a club (Rusty's?) out on the Santa Monica pier. He was ridiculous. At one point Mike turned to me and said, "It's OK. He's not from earth."
Learning to play the harp and how in the HELL I never thought to listen to Butterfield has left me lost for words. I grew up listening to this stuff. I not only feel like I've done a disservice to myself, but humanity in general. One of the Greats.....if not THE GREATEST!
Greatest, I don't know, but I love him, too.
And, listen, if you haven't heard Butterfield's cover of "The Thrill is Gone," find it here on RUclips. It'll melt your socks, assuming you're wearing any.
He played it back-to-front too squeaky.I have played all my life but God knows how he did that.Sonny Terry too.Magic lad.Jim.Liverpool.
1ST heard of this Band via the East West album. Being from Chicago originally Myself Butterfield had the SOUL to play that harmonica! Do believe the only original here is the Man Himself!
the musicians are really in sync here
I just had a gig with Joseph Morganfield, youngest son of Muddy Waters. The stories Joseph had of Paul and all the blues greats like Eric Clapton being his fathers (Muddy’s) best man and on and on was pretty cool. Of course playing the blues with Joseph was great. On one days practice consisting of an hour and a half after his flight from Chicago. Check it out on Facebook (Ian Rhein) if you’re interested. We played in an opera house in which the band was in one country and the audience was in another...as the opera house straddled the border. Every gig I talk to Butter...as he’s my largest influence in music. Take care all you blues lovers!
I lived in Willow for a time got picked up hitching back home from woodstock by Butter we stopped at the Bear cafe for a whisky. I am 17 at the time 1975 and he was the coolest . I played congas around the area and Paul and Harvey Brooks did a benefit concert for the Lutheran church anyway the conga drummer was late to the gig so I figured I should sit in for him. That was a blast got to do stormy Monday and a couple other tunes before I had to give up the drums. Man I really miss him. I moved later that year and saw him one time about a year later at a show in Austin . He was sitting in the seats behind my wife and I as the theater filled up .I said to my wife "Hey there's Butter" and went to say hi , just a really nice guy. RIP Butter.
And what an honor to be gigging with Muddy's Kin. Muddy Waters was my first concert my older bro took me to at some collage in Rhode Island, Mose Allison opened for Muddy I was about 12 I am so lucky!
Left us far too soon! I guess he was following his own path to his destiny! RIP PVB
You must bei a Katholik!
electric white blues at its best
I saw Paul Butterfield I think it was 1967. They were opening up for the turtles. The turtles got egged when they came on stage. LOL what a diverse audience that was.
I love Butterfield. Saw the band a few times in Montreal at the New Penelope.
How could there be even one person who could give this a thumbs down? What would it take for you to “like” this? SMH...sorry Butter.

Yeeeaaah!💃💃💃

To me Paul was the greatest harp player of all and I have heard most of them.He had soul and a type of playing that went beyond.I just cannot explain really, so maybe I should shut my gob.Jim.Liverpool.
+curleyteeth u mean...harmonic?
+curleyteeth what about Lil Walter???
+curleyteeth Sonny Boy Williamson???
Myat Htoo Yes without a doubt, but I have always preferred the Chicago style of harp playing.Only just though,Jim,Liverpool.
Yes he really did have the SOUL and the raw emotion... for me it is a wonder that a white man (No thing intended here) could understand the depth of blues and sing it to the audience... other whites who had the blues heart & soul were Peter Green & SRV... and they wrote their own songs!
Aw, man, YEAH !!!! Blues with a feeling indeed...Butter was/is an F'in GIANT...Bloomfield, too.
Learned about him in the late 60s and just always bought he was the “daddy rabbit”
Big Walter Horton was another one. Very very underrated. There's a story that he gave Sonny Boy II lessons. And I remember the first time I heard the late, great Norton Buffalo on Bonnie's version of Runaway and thought to myself "wow, Butter just keeps getting better and better" The good news is that music is an endless deep ocean; the best news is that people always fuckin' argue about the best part is!
Too true Laurel.We know don`t we.Jim.Liverpool.
Laurel Downs don’t forget little Walter and Willy Dixon
Never will Warren.Little Walter took harp playing to another dimension.Jazz on a harp.I bought "Confessin The Blues" album and have never looked back.Dixon was the master writer and a great double bass player to boot.Jim.Liverpool.
When Bonnie's version of Runaway first broke, a friend of Paul's asked if he had heard it, mentioning that Norton played three different harps to get through the solo. Allegedly, Butterfield said: "Get back to me when he can play it on one". That's the story I heard.
What a TV night that was....Paul Butterfield, Peter Gabriel and Alvin Lee on Rockpalast and right after that Mohamed Ali's revenge on Leon Spinks, september 15 1978 :)
A wonderfully gem.
Man, they really tore it up here 👍🏼 ! Butter was the BEST HARP PLAYER EVER !
