He never wanted to be famous, just make good art. He still plays with his band The Baiscs, under his real name Wouter "Wally" De Backer. He's the drummer and occasionally does vocals, he'll most likely never take up the name Gotye again.

I picture an afternoon of chill'n. You know like a Sunday afternoon with nothing to do and being happy to do nothing.
I picture content with ones self. just waking up and looking out of the window, seeing the green trees with a light rain and bright sun, going out with your mother's rain boots and umbrella taking a deep breath and.....heaven..
this song doesn't have to be just about a girlfriend to me its about family friends. or even yourself.

This video explains the process of putting oneself back together again after a relationship, after the significant other is internalized and eventually dejected from the parting of ways. I can also see it as being an attempt to mend the relationship again, collecting parts from the past in attempt to heal. Interesting and thought-provoking piece of art. Seems like a psychologist's wet dream.
Whether this kind of message was intended or not, the frame work of psychological properties which the human being is inherently obligated to operate under influence every object of perception.
I also feel that the constant ringing refers to the constant pain one deals with from a relationship

@@Diogenes_Lantern yes but something has to create what you are perceiving and gotye is a creator, what makes it art is the fact that it can be perceived in all those sorts of ways and those who can create the most widely felt art are the true creators of our reality
I'm identifying with the video. Sometimes, we do things that hurt people, and tear them apart. And when all is done, we try to pick all the pieces and put em back together. However, this pieces had become something totally different, and we can't get the things back to where it all started. It's really sad, but life goes on at the end.

To be honest my favorite song from Gotye, this song is just perfect, really smooth, and beautiful. Reminds me of how good life used to be when I was still with my parents. This song will always be one of his bests.

as an artist, l am actually inlove with arts because thats the only talent l have,well l am not like the other artist that copies everything but it's fine to copy something it's just amazing when you attached your feelings in the art, example a red is a symbol of love and anger, and that color is one of your emotion right now so we gonna attached it in our artwork.
When I was a kid this video scared me for some reason lol. I’m 13 now and it’s just very nostalgic too see all theese videos! My mom introduced me too him when we went too Florida the year this was realeased! It’s just so memorable I hope that he starts making music again!

To me this song and video tells the story of feeling like the knight in shining armor in a relationship. The fall is the fall from the relationship in turmoil. Scattering pieces of the image and the naked vulnerable person behind the armor then attempting to chase the missing pieces in order to then reclaim the position of hero. Who the significant other saw them as and who they feel they ought to have been but trust was lost. Notice the chasing of the knights helmet and the jumbled up mess in the middle of the pictures trying to put things back together. All in all it seems to be saying in order to be with anyone else you first must be whole.
i loved how he used all of these animated music videos for his backgrounds in concert. he is sooo amazing if any of you guys havent seen him live you should do so.

I've always interpreted this song as a parent or guardian singing it to their child. Like the kid has been let down before by false promises from said person and that person realizes how badly they've messed up is pleading with the kid to give them a chance to make things right again.
I'm a parent, but always identified this song with my adult relationships. Thanks for opening up my eyes.

Somehow the low quality audio adds to the vibe of the song. Sounds like something you'd hear in a dream, muffled and distant.

This is the only Gotye song I have a hard time listening to, because it makes me think of my ex and how he failed at the chance I gave him to better our relationship.
Other artists are truly afraid of blatantly stating something; they always beat around the bush. Gotye, on the other hand, is someone who stands out against the tide. He is willing to state things simply, and that makes his work so beautiful.... such a pure genius.

God, I love this music videos. They're such an explosion of creativity. It's like imagination had a really fun night with Picasso, Van Gogh, Leonardo DaVinci, and Andy Warhol, then woke up in the morning sick to its stomach, but with a mind full of ideas, then threw them up all over this video.
