  • The written review of the Triangle 40th Anniversary Comète loudspeaker will appear on www.SoundStageHiFi.com on September 1. The speaker sells for $2200/pair in the United States.
    In this Take 2 video review, Jay Soulsik gives you his impressions of this celebrated model, which is a two-way design with a horn-loaded, magnesium-dome tweeter and a 6.5" midrange-woofer with a paper-based cone. Before the Comètes arrived, Jay was already familiar with various Triangle speakers-but this model still really surprised him. Watch the video to learn more.

    I've scored #288 of the Triangle 40th Comète Speaker. Your review allowed me to gain insight into an interesting speaker. I am now listening to Dave Brubeck's Take Five on this horn speaker and am now pleased I took a punt and went for it (I can sure hear the Piano's reverberations). There are many things that make a successful speaker, but I'll comment on the following and leave it at that for these Triangles: First, the soundstage is wonderful and open, the best in my speaker collection in my rather small room(s). Secondly, the background is quiet; I don't know how quite to state this, and as I use a very quiet amplifier, the detail retrieval through the system with these speakers is the missing link that now completes the delivery of sound in the room (how do they do that). They sound awesome! So glad with these and your review was an important contribution to allow me to purchase them. Thank you.

      Nice to hear, I've been seriously considering getting these after watching A British Audiophile's review and this one.
      I already have the non 40th anniversary edition of the Comete, kind of bought them on a whim based on the BR03's reputation and paired with an Advance Paris A10 Classic that I also literally bought just to see and because it looks nice lol, and omg...The soundstage, detail, imaging, even in low volume listening, just kills my Aria 906's, F502's, UBR62's, Q350's I ended up selling, it sounds so damn musical, I haven't yet heard a better pairing, not even when auditioning equipment in stores. It was the first time I ever actually just sat down and enjoyed music with my eyes closed, enjoying every single sound that just sounds "better" than anything I have ever heard thus far, and that's with the average dac built into my A10 lol.
      And if these sound just 5% better, I want them and a Pontus II and I can die happy.
      What do you have yours paired with btw?

      @@ericmann1781 Well, I've been optimizing the positioning of the speakers. Now with regards to the SoundStage review written by Diego Estan, there is one correction required and one piece of detail to offer to improve the bass response.
      1. The woofer size is 6 inches, not 6.5 as stated in the written article.
      2. The feet: the speakers comes with two styles of feet that screw into the bottom of the speakers: little rubber jobs and rose coloured conical spikes.
      On this point the instructions in the manual were not clear for this 'French Canadian dude', hence I sent an email to Triangle. And Wow!, they got back to me within 24 hours.
      They state that the rubber feet are offered for use on surfaces that could otherwise be damaged by the use of the supplied conical spikes.
      Using the spikes will further decouple the speaker to allow it to be more dynamic and improve bass response.
      I've tried both, and I agree, while only a marginal improvement, it was noticeable in favour of the spikes: and that's how they are going to remain in place.
      In the online review, the reviewer removes the feet and puts the speaker on stands (I removed the attached rubber feet and placed the Comètes on my 24″-high Focal Sopra No1 stands in my usual speaker locations); then goes on to state the bass is not good.
      My point of view: I agree these are not bass monsters. That said, the bass is perfectly weighted and satisfactory for my small room (about 12 feet wide, 19 feet long and I sit about 11 feet away from the speakers). While it is a fact that my Dynaudio Special 40 offer deeper bass, the tone, the tunefulness and the soundstage (both width and depth) all go to the Triangle, nothing to speak of the detail and fun factor they also provide.
      For sure no speaker is perfect, but having a variety of topologies of speakers in my repertoire is part of my hobby. Bottom line: these are amazing speakers regardless of price; but affordable.

    I've added the 40th anniversary Triangle speaker stands and I'd thought I'd add additional information. The stands are taller than I'm used to but they seem to work nonetheless. You need to consider the stands as a system and it took me awhile to get the speakers to sound not good, but great. The stands did improve the sound but two very important factors were at play. 1. I needed to mass load them; about 50% filled with sand and 2. The speakers are screwed in from the bottom of the top plate. I think all stand mount speakers should offer this feature; just like Dynaudio do for the Heritage Special. Slowly tightening the speakers to the top plate compresses a rubber matt to protect the bottom of the speaker; as I slowly tightened, the speaker would mate with the top plate and the bass would improve. I did not get crazy with the torque, but at some point everything just gels and make the speaker more secure. I was skeptical when I first got them, but they work great. PS: I'd love to try a pair of SS stands: on my bucket list!

    I love the presentation too. Triangle speakers are amazing. I have the bro, the Titus, the comète and the trio. One thing i can say is that the bass is full but a lot is missing. It stops generally at 60hz to 50hz. Which means on certain songs it sounds weird. Like something is seriously missing. Specially when you're used to ear those things. It takes weeks for me to get used to the new softer presentation when i step out of triangle. Because of that i must use a pair of subs with it Everytime. And then it is really amazing

    I've been meaning to set up a home theater in my Gaming Room and these speakers blew me away in a presentation at a retailer's for Hi-Fi along with the Focal Aria 906.
    The thing is I plan on going more home-cinema oriented than Hi-Fi and I was planning on getting two pairs of bookshelf speakers as I only have 15m² of room so there's no point in getting floorstanding speakers. Apart from the subwoofer and front speaker which I'll get to complete the whole set, would the Triangle Comete 40th Anniversary be suited for Home-Cinema, one pair as main speakers and the other as surround?

      These speakers just sound amazing on all of them, zero harshness from the IOTAVX even at high volumes, bass more pronounced on the Rotel and Advance Paris, these speakers just shine with everything.

    I auditioned these yesterday at my local dealer (Lance Shevchuk @ Forefront Audio in Rochester, NY,) using my DECware Zen Amp which pumps out 2.3W/channel. They were new out of the box, so not run in at all AFAIK. THEY ARE SPECTACULAR. I can’t comment on imaging as we didn’t really play with setup, but I kinda disagree with Jay regarding speed of bass. Maybe other speakers are faster, but the 40th Anniversary Comètes are plenty fast to my ears. Once I have them in my house I will be able to work with imaging more and further evaluate the bass performance (which was AMAZING in the dealer’s room) more.
    Yes, I am buying these. I chose the sycamore since I tend to prefer lighter colours for the speaker finish. Besides the sycamore being a light/blonde finish, it is also a matte finish which may be a bitter fit in some decors.
    Final note: I first listened to the Wharfedale Lintons, which were disappointing in relation to the good reviews they have received. I suspect they’re simply not a great match with my amp. The first track we played with the Comètes was Temptation by Diana Krall, from her Girl in the Other Room album. Both my dealer and I had our eyes popping out of our skulls and our jaws on the floor. This was the first time Lance had heard the Comètes and he kept saying « I knew they would be good, but I didn’t expect them to be THIS good out of the box! »
    Yes, I am buying them. They are a limited edition so if anyone is interested audition them. If you have no way to audition (they are hard to get due to Covid shipping issues,) buy them with return privilege if you can. For my main system, I am set. Done. Fini.

      @@NawMan357 Bass performance is very good, beyond what one would expect for a smallish stand mount. While they present a narrow face, they are quite deep at about 15 inches/38 cm. I haven’t done any testing with a dB meter, and probably won’t, at least for a while. I suspect with more break in (I probably have only about 6-8 hours on them) the bass will tighten up (though it’s not really “loose” by any stretch,) and I have yet to mass load the stands. The stands are nicely made but the post is steel so it rings without being loaded.

    Jay, nice review! Just one comment that confused me a little, @5:15 you mentioned that these are "holographic" speakers but then @6:30 you mention that you struggled with center imaging (just center?). I have always related holographic speakers with well imaging speakers...as rightly or wrongly I associate holographic (3D) sound with a sound that projects voices and instruments in a well defined place in the soundstage... but this might be a mistake on my part. What do you mean as holographic in this context? Do you mean that the sound is "detached" from the speakers or something else? Thanks

    • @Jayiyagi
      @Jayiyagi 3 года назад +3

      holographic doesn't mean great imaging. Sound staging and imaging are two separate things.
      Imaging is what you are describing right now. Centre imaging is the focus in the middle of the room or between your speakers.
      3D holographic soundstage means its wide and deep so that it feels/sounds like it is surrounding you. You hear things to a much higher degree than the physical plain of the speakers.
      hope that helps

    Sorry but I get the idea the minimum impedance is 4.2 Ω (four-point two ohms), and the comma (,) is a typo. The weight is also listed at "8,8Kg" (with a comma) and I don't think they are saying the weight is 8kg for the left speaker and 8kg for the right speaker of the stereo pair. So the correct minimum impedance is probably 4 point 2 ohms, and not the 4 ohms and 2 ohms that you said in your very good review of the speaker.

    • @soundstagenetwork
      @soundstagenetwork  3 года назад +6

      It's actually not a typo on the site and Jay was mistaken when he read it. In France, where the company is based, a comma is used where, in North America, there would be a decimal point. So it's 4.2 ohms. And then a decimal is used where North Americans would use the comma. So let's say that the price per pair then would read $2.200,00, whereas in North America it's obviously $2,200.00.

Speakers are clearer and have even more of that snappy, dry bass tone with better distinction down low. Overall seems to be even better balanced and just more of what you love from the Comete. The magnesium tweeter seems smoother but with better detail. Very happy upgrade for me, based on early impressions so far

    • @ericmann1781
      @ericmann1781 2 года назад

      Depends on your use case, but in most scenarios, I heavily recommend even the standard Comete over the UBR62.
      The only reason I am keeping my UBR62's is because I have 3 setups, home theater, PC and another gaming/tv/music setup in another room.
      The Comete beats it in clarity because of its fantastic tweeter and the bass is all around better, if I ever find a new speaker to keep and have to get rid of one, the Elac's will be the first to go. It's not a bad speaker at all, I just find the Comete better in every single regard.

      @@liberwill True, I still love them and sold the Focal Aria 906 to keep them, their soundstage and imaging work surprisingly well at close distance too. The only thing I tried that really beats it outright are the Triangle Signature Theta and that's saying a lot with Elac's being less than 1/3 the price.
      Modern Rotel gear will help the bass shine and still compete with other speakers I really like so I foresee keeping them for quite some time.
      I can't wait to try them with other integrated amps and pre amps, next on my list to find used are Musical Fidelity and Atoll, might try the Parasound Halo Hint 6 too.
      Maybe I should get speaker stands first though since I have a pair standing on top of towers like a noob LOL.

      @@patrickmccrank8414 BRX have a more transparent highs, maybe we can say it in the "precise" way, it's focus ! soundstage is nice particularly in the middle in front of you, mids are reffined and delicate, the bass is deep and powerful for the size of the cabinet (really nice bass). Its a dynamic sound with a big scale and very performing speakers!
      Triangle comete 40th (got one pair), more lively presence ! , sound surrounds you more than the brx, with a nice separation of each instruments, its a bit more "musical" speakers for me...and more charming on the feminine voice; Tones are more textured !..Bass is there,not so deep as brx one but faster/punchy !
      Triangle are a bit bigger in size, so you need to pull them off from the wall and the soundstage is evolving a lot in a better way.

    • @patrickmccrank8414
      @patrickmccrank8414 Год назад

      @MrSkyou Thank you for the in depth comparison. It sounds like they are both winners. I prefer adding a sub to any setup. The sub allows the monitors to shine in what they're strongest at. Still if a monitor can stand on its own, that's going to be the cleanest sound.

    • @tietoliikenne
      @tietoliikenne 2 года назад

      I heard the Genese has a more laid back sound, I might be wrong. Because of this, I think usually reviewers don't tend to compare the two since they are different kind. Perhaps the Buchard S400 is a better comparison for the Genese. I might be wrong ><
      You could think of it this way, if you prefer a more Klispch sound that is refined, go for the new Triangles, but if you prefer the more vintage sound which tend to be more laid-back, less forward sounding, the Genese will impress :) the Buchardt might too as I've heard.
      Sharing my thoughts alright I understand you might prefer to hear Jay's one.

      So true Mark.
      I picked up a used pair of 30th Anniversary Antals 10 years ago in San Fransisco.
      I was told the previous owner became frustrated with the Antals after a few weeks when they just didn't perform to his expectations and he took them back to the dealer and traded them in for different speakers, I'm not sure the dealer even realized that the problem was they weren't broke in as they were fairly new to the Triangle line.
      I came along and saw they looked new and got them at half price.
      As I had owned a set of regular Antals before I knew what they sounded like once broke in.
      These speakers clearly weren't even close to being broke in sounding tight, un-dynamic and hard.
      I played them for another few months before they really started to achieve their fast dynamic detailed sound.
      They would continue to sound better and better over the next several months.

We don’t “ really” want perfect music playback. We want it tamed and comfy. If the trumpet was in your house , you would kick his ass out after a while. Klipsch rocks

      How small a company do you have to be for a French person not to think that a company is an evil greedy multinational? Triangle is a tiny company they have about 5 employees, they occuoy one building. They started out as an even tinier company like the ones you prefer and they've built up to where they are over 35 years. they build their own drivers. all the other companies you cite are shoe string operations unable to achieve and maintain a global presence because they simply can'tproduce enough product because because they have insufficient capacities to construct in a timely manner and to deliver on international orders. Triangle started as a similar tiny operation and today they are still much smaller than focal. Instead of criticizing a small French success story you have to run it down because of their success. Imperceptibly small and about to go out of business is so much more appealing to the french anti success ideology.

      For what it’s worth, Soundstage (and Jay) are based in North America and primarily (exclusively?) review products that are distributed there. I grant there are some really great boutique components that are made in France. If I lived in France, (which would be a dream) I would certainly audition and consider them. I have looked at Davis - they have longevity in the business and I would love to hear their speakers. But they probably have close to 0% presence in the US/Canada market.
