  • This Take 2 episode features Focal’s Shape 65 analog active loudspeaker, which is mainly designed for professional use (i.e., recording studios as a monitor), but, as Gordon Brockhouse and Jay Lee have found out, the Shape 65 is exceptional in a home environment, both in a nearfield situation and as traditionally placed stereo loudspeakers. Besides this video review, you can read Gordon Brockhouse’s exhaustive written review on SoundStageSimplifi.com through this link: www.soundstage...
    What’s important to know about the Focal Shape 65 is that because it’s active, it has its own built-in amplification. That means that the user doesn’t need to supply a power amplifier - you can drive a pair of Shape 65s directly with the outputs of a traditional two-channel preamplifier, or even with a digital-to-analog converter or phono stage with a volume control. All told, the Focal Shape 65 is a versatile loudspeaker that you absolutely need to know about, whether you’re working in the studio or relaxing at home.

    I can confirm all said in the review! I have my Shape 50s (5inch woofer) for more than a year now and all Jay said is very true. Haven't heard the 65s, but I assume they just reach lower in the bass. I have them paired with S.M.S.L SU-8 DAC and a REL T5i and I love the combo. Full balanced DAC with active monitors and a fantastic musical sub make a really great combo

    Fun fact: Focal used to provide the drivers for high-end KRK monitors before they went overseas for their drivers and manufacturing.

    Focal speakers are a always a great option if you can afford them. They make amazing speakers with tons of R&D. Sure these sound great.

    Thank you for this because I had no idea that these even existed, I was so busy trying to scrape coins for the 51's. And the come in multiple sizes and multiple budgets with no sacrifice of quality. This is no-brainer for me. I heard you mention them in the second 51 review vid. I'll be purchasing a pair of the 50's.

    Jay, really appreciate your reviews. No drama or histrionics, just honest and analytical information that educates in both function and sound results. Wish Focal would dress the speaker up a bit. Ugly speaker, beautiful sound. Why not both???

    Well done review. I like these better than the genelec 8030C, and these have analog inputs where the genelec only have XLR. Versatility and great eq controls. When the bottom line is accuracy and detail, Focal has it, warts and all. Not polite and smoothed away like other monitors.

    I just picked up Pioneer RM-07s, imo best active monitor under $2k. 100W/50W AB to woofer/tweeter, aluminium die cast cabinet, co-axial design..it's like a baby genelec. Would love for you to review this one Jay, can't believe there isn't more info on these speakers

    • @earlfenwick
      @earlfenwick 3 года назад

      Vamsi maybe you can do a review on them yourself. Nobody is reviewing them except for engineers. I'd love to know how they work out in a home listening application. Hopefully more forgiving than the Genelecs. Cheaper than Genelecs and Focals too! Be sure to let me know if you do.

    • @ruvamsi
      @ruvamsi 3 года назад +1

      @@earlfenwick As it turns out, I wouldn't recommend it for home music listening. There's a lot to like, expansive soundstage, incredible detail, bass extension. But also fatiguing, poor imaging, and not very musical compared to Hegel H70/KEF LS50. From what I've gathered online, the tweeter is designed poorly resulting in pretty bad dispersion characteristics..I guess that's the problem I'm hearing. I'm still using them in one room and plan to replace the driver with a Fostex full range. The chassis, amp, port all seem impressive, so hoping for a favorable result.

    your presentation is flawless, and knowledge of sound systems impressive. Thanks for such a deep analysis of these speakers. I have a question. I have a very small home recording set up, an iMac Pro going into a focusrite Scarlett 18i20 out to old Tannoy Reveal monitors, and I hate them hahah. so I'm looking for new monitors and those Focal Shape 65's seem like winners . Do they have enough bass that I don't need a sub? and what is the Hegal adding to the equation? I'm on a budget of course and I'm wanting to just go out of the Scarlett into the 65's for mixing out of Logic Pro X. any help you can give is much appreciated . And I mix everything from drum and bass to rock and roll, and a lot of vocal overs for video (I'm a video producer but do music as well ) thanks .

How much difference do you think there will be between the Focal Shape 65's and Tannoy Gold 8's? The Focals are double the price, but not sure whether it's worth it for a home studio. thanks

    My question is, would the reviewer chose these over passive traditional audiophile monitors for up to medium large or smaller spaces, stereo music duties or even smaller home theater space duties, at any given reasonably priced point competitor? I would think the active monitors would tend to be potentially more dynamic and authoritative sounding, all things equal?? Curious
