Chasing the Sligo timber

- A short series of clips relating to the Irish Railways Sligo timber traffic, now another lost flow. The video was recorded in the final year of operations at various points from Sligo itself towards Dublin.
On this particular day, General Motors 071 class No. 074 was in charge of proceedings. The loaded train had been divided at the bottom of the climb from the old rail served harbour before being brought up to the station in two portions due to poor rail conditions.
The first scene sees the first portion arriving at the top of the incline, then being propelled into the station. Shortly afterwards 074 returns to collect the second half, then all marshalled together the train leaves Sligo. Later in the journey east of Longford the ensemble is halted on the steep climb by the non appearance of a crossing keeper ... the train takes some re-starting on the wet rails when he finally arrives about an hour later! - Авто/Мото
Chasing the Sligo Timber!! Between 2000-2008, the timber train passed Mullingar at 3pm every Saturday. At 1:49-2:00 the majestic Benbulben can be seen. Great video. Further, thanks for other clips, especially those captured in Zimbabwe. Lastly, hope the Dublin-Sligo line will be upgraded to have double tracks, electrified and connected to Donegal. Subscribed and looking forward to new train videos.
Lifetime train enthusiast.
Excellent footage - you cannot beat the growl of GM in notch 8! Thanks for posting!
A lovely collection of clips - a nice record of this now forgotten service.
I can only imagine how annoyed the driver must have been to be held up for so long, and to be forced to stop his train on such a steep incline. Can't have been a good day at the proverbial office for him!
Bart.
Excellent! I used to get the empty run of this train every Tuesday/Friday, though seldom caught it loaded!
Great video
Nice Shots!😃.Well Filmed!.
Nice video. I subscribed and liked.
Has the spur line to Sligo Quay been lifted yet?
No, but there is a buffer just before the road bridge. So no through traffic .
