Part 3/4: How to Fix an Xbox 360 Disc Drive That Won't Open: Fixing or Replacing Rubber Band

- Part three of four. We are now removing, and taking apart the Disc Drive, this is safe, but please, stay away from the laser disc reader, they are very sensitive, we are removing the rubber band in the dvd drive, and putting it in boiling hot water for 15-20 seconds, then immediatley in cold water for 10 seconds, then putting the rubber band back on, and putting the disc drive back together. Next part, we are putting the Xbox 360 all back together, and testing it.

For all those having this problem, he is referring to the hole that is immediately below the actual tray and is ABOVE the 'square' and 'circle'. It is not necessarily featured on that line of things, but is immediately above them

Truly a cure for Phat Xbox 360 tray opening malfunctions. This fixed my Elite which was having problems for over two years! This creative trick took minutes to do and has positive results. Two thumbs up!
You can actually take off the rubberband without taking apart the whole xbox. Just open the disc tray using a flat spoon or paperclip (just search for temporary fixes). Then when the tray is open, unplug the xbox. Then use tweezers to unhook the rubberband and use the boiling water like in the video. Then just re-loop the rubber band through the small spool and over the front part of the big spool. Then just hand-wind the rest of the rubberband back on by rotating the big spool. There ya go.
I used your method coupled with his rubber band fix and it worked perfectly. Just make sure you don't move the console to a position where the disc drive can close. Pain in the a**.

You don't have to disassemble the console for this, not even to boil the band. Just get yourself a flashlight (I used my phone's light), power off console, use a paperclip to open tray, remove the band, wipe it (I used some antibacterial wet wipe), then reverse it (so that the inner side is facing out and not touching the gears), put it back on. First put it on the small motor gear, then as much as you can on the big gear and turn it (the big gear) clockwise while holding the band so it doesn't slip off. Voila! It's like new now... Just bought a used arcade jasper.
This. Can confirm. Just did it and it took maybe 5 mins.

The Problem:
My disc tray wouldn't move. Even using the manual eject with the paperclip wouldn't get it to budge. I had been having problems with opening for a while, but finally, it gave up. I used a screwdriver to try to get it to release, but all that happened was that I unseated the drive tray, and made it worse, and it would not close completely and still wouldn't open.
I noticed, when I tried to push the tray in, there was a great deal of stress on the gears. I knew I needed to repair the thing. It's 4 years old, so no issues with warranty.

I learned two things that helped a TON!
One, I learned to dip the belt into hot water, then cold, and put it back into the machine. I'm a little worried about effects on the materials, but it was worth a try. Other videos have you just pull the tray out and shut down the machine. You can still get to the belt, but as my tray wouldn't move, I had to take the entire machine apart.
Two, I was able to look at the video and see where everything was, because it also seemed like I had a problem with the timing of the open/close positions of the lens platform and the position of the tray. I made sure that the carriage (I suppose it's what it's called--the thing with the teeth that is moved by the gears and raises and lowers the platform) was in the same position as yours.

I was on the verge of getting another xbox but you really helped me out. There were a few things I had to figure out for myself, but after toughening up the rubber band my console opens and closes just fine. Thank you so much!
Really helpful video, I thought your solution for strengthening the rubber band was genius! However I was able to take the band out and put it back in again without taking the console apart!
Btw, this works for any mechanical disc-tray drive, not just on Xboxes. Ex. Any console disc-tray drives, Laptop disc drives, computer disc drives, dvd/blu-ray, etc. I’m not sure about any slot loading drives though.

I used this method today, think its worth stripping the xbox as its amazing how much dust gets in them

worked great for me, the microwave didn't make the water warm enough to toughen the band, but the electric kettle did the trick, so i rcmd people use the kettle instead just to be on the safe side, thanks for sharing this info, thumbs up from me

I was having this problem so i didn't think the boiling water would help any but it does. Do it, put it back together and it should work. It did for me anyway.
No need to tear it apart just get a pair of forceps reach in pull off the rubber ban heat it in the water cool it then replace it with the forceps.
if you replace the rubber band, and it still doesn't work, what does that mean?
Its easier to get the stuff out the sides if you taker he tray out. You lift the little tab up on the left and pull up and pull the tray then just lift up and out on the right side and the tray just comes right out, no damage or anything

Good job. I also swabbed the belt pulleys with some alcohol, because they were really dirty too. Works like a champ now. I wish I'd got my hands on the one I have here before someone fed the front bezel to a lion in an attempt to get the drawer open. Anyway, now I have a working XBox, scored for $5.99 at the thrift store. Wooha.

If you have a pair or needle-nose tweezers skip to the part about removing the band... its right at the front. I only had to remove the faceplate on my xbox to open the tray. Good detail on the videos though for those who have difficulty doing it the fast way.
how do i know that the problem is the rubber band?
I took my faceplate off, used paperclip to open tray, cleaned rubber band right there with a qtip n alcohol.. also cleaned pulleys n gears and edge of tray.. works like a champ and didn't rip my xbox and cd drive apart.. you can even push tray in n out to help you clean. You're welcome!

Hey I need help with something; About a year after taking apart my xbox and leaving it open, I lost the little circular disc that you would put ontop your actual game in order to iso mod it, can you tell me what that piece is called? Its the magnetically attached back part located at 3:22
Thanks for the fix it video it helped a bunch.. I was able to remove the band without taking apart the Xbox. Also just a tip for others after you condition the band with hot and cold water dry the band then coat it with dish soap let stand for 5 mins the wipe clean and re install. The dish soap helps restore elasticity to the rubber.

thanks for the presentation, i eventually skipped to this part of the tutorial. modern technology can be foiled by a rubber band. may just try to find a replacement to buy since i'm not a huge fan of doing this process over and over. good info anyways.

I found that the boiled rubber band only worked for one use and that I needed to buy a replacement rubber band ("belt") off of eBay as a more permanent fix. It was still very cheap to buy a new one.
the tray wont open when I put the driver into the horizontal rectangle, is there something that clicks or what?

at 1:44 when u say put the paper clip in, i found it but it only opens 1/3 of the was and when i pull on it and stuff it wont come out
I've watched less of videos on how to fix this problem, but even with the disc drove open like in this video or still won't open and close properly.

My xbox tray at first wont open (produce loud grass cutting machine sound). so i do the paperclip technique. it open manually and i take a look around it, i found out that the rubber band/conveyor belt at the gear to the right hand side was cut in two. now, is it DIY fixable?
if i send to shop for repair, will they just change the rubber band or change the whole disc driver?

Maybe if you're like super good at mechanics and can shimmy it in there, I think it'd be wayyy easier to just take it apart again. :(

that's not the problem im having is the one that spns the disc that shit wont spin how do you fix it?
SO my issue is it opens when the metal casing is not on it but as soon as the casing is re attached it wont open?
There is a magnet that holds the DVD in place, and the magnet on the spinner weakens so the magnet on the case holds the laser assembly up. So on the case magnet, you need to put tape on it to weaken it. If you put too much it will make a grinding noise.
Some light would be REALLY useful...
