I have to say thank you! My Xbox hasn't been used in over a year. I was just about to throw it out, but then I came across your video. I followed your steps. Needless to say I have my xbox back now, you're a genius man, and you saved me 400 bucks. So thanks again... Peace!
Brilliant! I couldn't believe it actually worked. Had to use 4 layers of tape though, but I think I was using a much thinner tape (made of paper). Thanks for sharing - you saved me a costly bill at the repair shop.
Worked for me, thanks for posting this. I had the drive where the magnetic piece does not come through the top. But I was able to open the drive and get to it there (its hard mounted to the top inside). After putting the double tape on, works properly now. Thanks again!
Great fix!!! After going crazy trying to figure out why the tray opened with the disc unit covers removed and not with the covers on, I saw your video, tried your method, first with one layer of tape (it didn't work), then with two layers like you show here, and it worked perfectly, I hope it stays that way. THANKS A LOT. None of the other videos I watched before yours addresed this issue. Thanks again
I first cleaned all of the gears inside the tray mechanism, didn't work. Tried this thinking it wouldn't work and it has. It has also fixed (for now) a disc not reconised error. Brilliant video, Thanks alot.
That was my first step, then I tried lubing all those little gears I could reach, then I found your video! I think your spot on, and thank you for posting it and replying, its much appreciated. Least I know what the problem is now. My xbox is pretty ancient so I guess motor is just giving out. Without the magnet in place tray opened and shut smooth and quick. Your tip helped me get it to a point where a smaller tap is required than the WHACK I used to have to give it. Again, sincere thanks man.
Thanks for the instructions man. I got an old XBOX 360 from a friend cause he didn't know how to fix it. I decided to give it a shot and used 3 pieces of tape and it worked like a charm. This works 100%. Quick and easy. :)
Thank you so much! I bought an Xbox 360 from someone on craigslist and they would not let me in house to see it... I had to stay outside and look through window to make sure it was working. When I got home the tray would not open and nobody would answer door when I went back. Well thanks to you I got the last laugh and an Xbox 360 w/ 1 wireless controller for $50 :) Thanks again and God bless you Techies!!!
Dude thanks. I just happened to have two Xboxes opened at the time I was watching this. I just swapped covers on the optical drives and now everything works like a charm.
Hey man, just to let everybody else know, this fix does work. There was nothing wrong with the gears or the belt. Every time I put the top on the drive, it wouldn't open. I thought the magnet idea you came up with was full of crap and I was dead wrong. Thanks for the info; now I have a working XBox 360 again. Peace
I hope this works! Just got the torx driver yesterday, opened it, cleaned off the lens, put it back, and wouldn't you know the bloody tray won't open. Thank you for uploading this! I'll have to try it later on today.
I rarely comment on youtubes, but this worked great for me. My Xbox 360 player has been on the fritz for a year. Fortunately I was able to get Destiny in there awhile ago, and haven't been playing anything else. Until my son took it out, and put in COD and then took out COD. It wouldn't open without a disk in there. So I used this procedure. For good measure, when I had the CD open.. I put Destiny back in. Some limited testing and this works great. Thanks!
I couldn't twist the top off and then found a video that can help me and it saved me a lot of work. Your method of twisting it off kept cutting my fingers. Though your method still works, just not the twisting one.
You SAVED MY DAY M8!! I did not believed it when I saw the video. Tried anyway out of desperation... IT WORKS!! U R MY HERO!!! CHEERS!! I used electricians tape... one sheat was enough :)
Omfg you are a genius. I've had my disk drive stick if it didn't have a disk in it for three years. I've tried cleaning the gears and band a million times to no effect. Three pieces of tape later and it opens perfectly. Thank you!
I thought the magnet might be Thursday cause, but I had no idea how to fix it. Great job! I had to use a piece of paper board from a light bulb box and it worked! The thickness is important and it will probably vary from unit to unit. I did find that the little hole in the center must be clear or the drive may squeel when it spins. Again great work!
Thanks a million man!!! Almost thought i'd had to get a new xbox after trying some other "fixes." This worked perfectly!!! My son and my pockets thank you!
@1007yogi that issue is because the xbox doesnt see the disc drive. Make sure ur molex cable and sata cable are connected properly. It also happens when the disc tray doesnt open and close all the way.
How the fuck did you come up with this? I fixed it with your method years ago and still works... this is fucking brilliant. Since then I told many xbox players and merchants/service people and no one even heard about anything like this...
I was so close. Cleaning the band and gears did nothing. I eventually figured out that there was a magnet, and it was super strong. I thought it might be a "rare-earth" magnet. At that point, I thought maybe there was a felt pad or something that was missing, which would've put a little more distance between the magnet and mechanism. I never would have thought that the magnet would have simply become stronger, over time.

Hi, this is a great fix. Our Xbox 360 disc tray was stuck and this works perfectly. I was thinking that as the rubber band which opens the tray gets weaker with age it may be that it is unable to overcome the magnet, it sure is strong! Your fix worked perfectly, two layers of tape works on ours. I noticed too in ours that the moving part of the optical drive was hitting the circuit board. I'm not sure why that was. It didn't seem like anything else was out of place. The board had a bit of a curve to it. I had to put a bit of eraser in at the side where it normally clips in to push it away from the moving parts. I had to take the bottom cover off as well as I didn't want that circuit board to touch it. I just used the top cover on the drive. I checked to make sure the board didn't touch anything but I had to be careful how I pushed on the connectors as only two screws at the back now hold the board in place. So far so good. The grandchildren are happy. Thanks! Great fix! :)
Will Smith, you're a genius. You should spend less time making movies and more time teaching us peons how to fix our 360s. Seriously though, thanks a lot, this video became ten times more amazing after I trawled through youtube looking at stupid fixes like punching the top of the console or fidgeting around with the silver bar.
Wow!!! This totally worked! You are brilliant man! My X-box is finally fixed after a year! Thanks for saving me 80 bucks dude. If you're ever in ohio come over for a beer.
@MrGball26 theres a motor that opens and closes the disc tray u can replace that. Its located on the bottom towards the front but you have to be able to solder so if you cant do that u may have to buy a new disc drive but u may have to flash the old key to the new drive.
thanks my dude worked like a charm had to add like another 3 layers of tape to get it to work but might have to remove like 1 layer cuz like you said my disks sounds loud when stopping to take them out
Good fix with the tape! Thanks!Don't sweat opening your Xbox. Spend some time watching the videos, buy a couple tools and open it up. It's hardware, it's hard to break it.
Thanks, great fix. I used four layers of brown packing tape which is more like cellotape, cut it into a tiny doughnut shape as you said and it worked first time. i suppose this would also work with just plain old paper. I'd suggest putting the disk drive back in and trying it before putting the whole xbox back together. cheers
dude your damn genius I've been working with Xbox 360 for almost 4 years and I've always been stumped as to why the disc tray was an opening at times on certain systems its always something super easy I have 3 white 360 s right now and two of which had this problem I've watched your video about 5 minutes ago and I've already done one system and it works 100 percent as you said thank you so much on to the next one
great vid, it worked. but it made the dvd make a crazy noise. you vid helped me to understand what the problem is. it's a combo of the dirt in the gears and the weakness of the rubber band over time. clean the gears with alcohol and oil them up just a little bit with machine oil, don't let the oil drip. keep the oil away from the RB. clean the RB and Gears make sure you get right into the grove, then place you rubber band into very hot water, don't let it twist. then coldwater, dry and rebuild
I'm going to try this fix now, as my disc tray has trouble opening. I think the cause of this problem that you suggested applies to my Xbox too, as when I open the tray without the DVD drive's lid, it opens 100% of the time. Thanks for this vid. ^^
This actually works thanks and i just wanna say it also works with 1 strip of duct tape but thanks it opens fine and works perfect now i had trouble for months trying to open the tray but this vid helped me out a lot so thanks again
I know the little gear thing your talking about and its meant to have the last tooth missing, thats the gear that locks the cogs and stops them from spining when the tray is fully closed, when it's almost closed it slides left (looking from the front) and engages with the teeth of the small cog. I have just followed this video and i recommend you do the same as it really does work! I used 3 layers of masking tape as mine looked thiner than what the guy in the video had. TRY IT! and let me know
I was able to avoid all of this by simply opening the tray (using the fist bump one last time to open it) and then with the tray open I was able to see the pulley with the small belt on it which opens the tray. I used tweezers and took off the belt, cleaned both the belt and the pulley with rubbing alcohol and a Q-Tip. (it was very dirty). Replace the belt and it works 100% now. I agree that the magnet is strong, I disagree that it gets stronger. What happens is the other parts are dirty such as the belt and pulley and cant work as hard as they used to. They don't have enough power anymore to separate the magnet. Cleaning the pulley and belt restores the lost power and you dont have to take anything apart to get it done. Great video though! You were right about the magnet but the fix is not to make it weaker, the fix is to make the failing parts stronger.
Thank you! Had to replace an old drive, its rubber band, and then clone the DVD key from the old drive for this new one. Wound up having this issue to put the icing on the cake.... Hopefully this fixes the issue after all the work I've done to repair this old phat.
Many thanks to you. You helped save my xbox without costing me a dime. By the way, if you only have clear tape like i did, it takes about 4 layers to work. Again, thanks.
Thanks for the idea ! I had no tape so I just remember something I used to do as a kid and I folded a piece of paper. Cut it close to the shape and used that in place of the tape & guess what .... It worked like a charm ! Great video ! Ur awesome
If you are having trouble twisting the metal disk off, it's easier if you get a needle or something similar and insert it inside the gap between the metal and black plastic part where they meet and try to pull with the needle. I did this and it came right off the first time, just be careful with the needle.
wow dude, i have tried ALOT to fix it, didnt work. at first i was like:this aint gonna work, but ill try. i tried 1,2, and 3 pieces of tape, then with the 4th piece, it sudently worked! thanks!
You sir are unbelievably generous.. You just gave me 25+ games to play! :D It worked perfectly. One layer of duct-tape did it for mine. And Salrumanor is right you do sound like Will Smith, haha.
thanks for this, i tried cleaning the cogs even used wd 40 to grease, cleaned rubber band in hot sopy water, none of that worked and i didnt half ass attempt if because i didnt really like the lidea of this fix, i just thought you sohludnt have to use workarounds but rather fix the problem. well this was the only fix that worked. cheers.
all the dvd drives arent the same theres a ton of different one but I would think the concept is the same. put some tape directly on the magnet if you can. try a lil at a time.
Magnets can get stronger or weaker just it takes a massive amount of time for either to happen naturally. Otherwise you can make a magnet weaker easily by just adding a bit of heat. To much heat however can remove the magnetic field entirely.
I've tried cleaning out all the dust and stuff in the drive, and it hasn't worked. Then I lubricated every moving part (except for the actual electronics, obviously) with some Vaseline, and while that noticeably reduced the drag on the tray, it did not fix the problem. With the top cover removed from the drive, the tray opened when plugged into the Xbox. This means that the magnet in the top must, in my case, be the problem! I'll try this and comment back on how it went.
I have to say thank you! My Xbox hasn't been used in over a year. I was just about to throw it out, but then I came across your video. I followed your steps. Needless to say I have my xbox back now, you're a genius man, and you saved me 400 bucks. So thanks again... Peace!
You sir are like the only person who actually has a solution to this problem.
Brilliant! I couldn't believe it actually worked. Had to use 4 layers of tape though, but I think I was using a much thinner tape (made of paper). Thanks for sharing - you saved me a costly bill at the repair shop.
5 videos later and finally found yours. I needed 4 layers of tape on mine, but finally worked. Genius. ty
thanks after months of trying to figure out how to fix this annoying issue you've saved me alot of time and money.

Dude thanks. I just happened to have two Xboxes opened at the time I was watching this. I just swapped covers on the optical drives and now everything works like a charm.
After watching dozens of videos this was the only one relevant to me. ty
I tried cleaning the rubber band, cleaning all parts, lubing the gears, and all of that helps but didn't fix the issue. This worked, thank you!!!

I rarely comment on youtubes, but this worked great for me.

oh my gawd, this worked!!!!!!!!! i spent hours cleaning and filing down pieces of the gears and whatnot, this worked right away, bravo, dude!
wow! man u are simply amazing ive tried everything i can think of and nothing worked til i found your vid. thanks alot this works great!!!
You SAVED MY DAY M8!! I did not believed it when I saw the video. Tried anyway out of desperation... IT WORKS!! U R MY HERO!!! CHEERS!!
I used electricians tape... one sheat was enough :)
I had that problem and now it work! Thank you for this information.
I almost didn't try this because I didn't think it would work - but it did. Used one small piece of tape and it opens every time.
Cheers!
That totally worked. You're one smart dude. I'm back on the skyrim and halo 4!!
Omfg you are a genius. I've had my disk drive stick if it didn't have a disk in it for three years. I've tried cleaning the gears and band a million times to no effect. Three pieces of tape later and it opens perfectly. Thank you!

My son and my pockets thank you!
i have been strugling with this with an old xbox 360 that i got for free 5 months ago, Finally fixed it using this method, thanks man.
I was really suprised and skeptical at what you said would fix it. I gave it a go and my boy is now playing legos indiana jones. thanks a bunch.
@1007yogi that issue is because the xbox doesnt see the disc drive. Make sure ur molex cable and sata cable are connected properly. It also happens when the disc tray doesnt open and close all the way.

Thanks man... I followed your instructions and my dvd driver is working fine, no more tray stuck
Thanks man it worked for me! I also cleaned the rubber band and all the parts which opens the tray just to be safe...
oh my god dude thank you!!! although i had to put like 7 or 8 layers of the masking tape but it worked like a charm!! ur a saint dude.
Saved me from buying a New tray
Have been searching all over you tube. For a year
Hey this worked perfectly for me! I highly recommend trying this if you have problems with your disc tray not coming out.

Hey just wanted to let you know I did it using electrical tape, like a dream! Thanks for the video man!
Ty!! This worked like a charm. We spent all night trying to fix it and then tried this!

Fantastic, Thank you. I have a Samsung drive so it was a bit different but I never would of thought of this & it worked perfectly. Thank you again.
This worked! Thank you soooo much! I was sooo excited to have a fully functional xbox again. :) Thank you again!
dude your damn genius I've been working with Xbox 360 for almost 4 years and I've always been stumped as to why the disc tray was an opening at times on certain systems its always something super easy I have 3 white 360 s right now and two of which had this problem I've watched your video about 5 minutes ago and I've already done one system and it works 100 percent as you said thank you so much on to the next one

Been buggin me for a long time Great instructions and it worked for me. Cheers
Had to use 3 pieces of tape, but it totally worked! Thanks for the video.
Works mah dude! Trying cleaning everything and nothing worked until I tried this!
This actually works thanks and i just wanna say it also works with 1 strip of duct tape but thanks it opens fine and works perfect now i had trouble for months trying to open the tray but this vid helped me out a lot so thanks again
You are very good at this, those insulators really do the trick.
I know the little gear thing your talking about and its meant to have the last tooth missing, thats the gear that locks the cogs and stops them from spining when the tray is fully closed, when it's almost closed it slides left (looking from the front) and engages with the teeth of the small cog. @halomaster2155 A lot of places charge quite a bit of $ for the drives but which one do you have? or do you know how to flash them?
You sir deserve some kind of award. Or atleast a cookie.
Thanks! Worked great on mine. I used 3 layers of tape for good measure. Hope it lasts until the next gen xbox is out :)
Omg cheers dude just did it it works absolutely perfect and it was the same amount of sheets thanks
I followed your instructions and things turned out perfectly. Thank you very much!
Great video though! You were right about the magnet but the fix is not to make it weaker, the fix is to make the failing parts stronger.
Doesnt work on all of them. Mine is completely shut and won't even allow me to use a paperclip.
yeah i cleaned mine really nice and it improved but still wont open when the xbox is upright. going to try this now.
Thank you! Had to replace an old drive, its rubber band, and then clone the DVD key from the old drive for this new one. Wound up having this issue to put the icing on the cake.... Hopefully this fixes the issue after all the work I've done to repair this old phat.
@MickeySHFOF did u clean the rubber band off? if not do that should help. You can wash with warm water and make sure to dry it
@realvidzs You bought the drive by itself and you put it in your xbox? Did you flash it first?
Many thanks to you. You helped save my xbox without costing me a dime. By the way, if you only have clear tape like i did, it takes about 4 layers to work. Again, thanks.
Thank u for making this video! Really helped me get a hair clip from the disc tray that my 2 year rammed in it.
Didn't get a chance to fix it yet, I was busy these past few days. But again thanks you for uploading this!
Thanks for the idea ! I had no tape so I just remember something I used to do as a kid and I folded a piece of paper. Cut it close to the shape and used that in place of the tape & guess what .... It worked like a charm ! Great video ! Ur awesome
great to here I have gotten a lot of hate for this vid from certain ppl so it nice it helps those who try it
awesome tutorial... mine is doing the same symptoms.. gonna try right away.. thx for the info.. im sure this will help...
If you are having trouble twisting the metal disk off, it's easier if you get a needle or something similar and insert it inside the gap between the metal and black plastic part where they meet and try to pull with the needle. I did this and it came right off the first time, just be careful with the needle.
Dude your fix really does work, you be the man !!! Thanks
This Works 100%, just saved me $40 to send the drive to get fixed!!!!!
I got it to work first time. Very clear instructions. Thanks.
wow dude, i have tried ALOT to fix it, didnt work. at first i was like:this aint gonna work, but ill try. i tried 1,2, and 3 pieces of tape, then with the 4th piece, it sudently worked! thanks!
You sir are unbelievably generous.. You just gave me 25+ games to play! :D
It worked perfectly. One layer of duct-tape did it for mine. And Salrumanor is right you do sound like Will Smith, haha.
thanks for this, i tried cleaning the cogs even used wd 40 to grease, cleaned rubber band in hot sopy water, none of that worked and i didnt half ass attempt if because i didnt really like the lidea of this fix, i just thought you sohludnt have to use workarounds but rather fix the problem.
well this was the only fix that worked. cheers.
Thanks for the video, saved me a lot of trouble!
great discovery my xbox works just fine now thanks man!
you are the man it saves me time and money thanks a lot works at the first try jus a couple of layers was enough works like a charm.
all the dvd drives arent the same theres a ton of different one but I would think the concept is the same. put some tape directly on the magnet if you can. try a lil at a time.
yes try cleaning off the black rubber band located in the front of the tray by the gears
Just did this, really works! Thanks man :D
Dam anyone ever told you that you sound like will smith. Lol i was concentrating really closely. 👍🏼🎮
YAY Not sure if it was the tape or the cleaning of the rubber band, I tried both at once because i did not want to repeat putting it back together.
great tutorial! thank you!
It saved me from having to spoof and swap from a liteon to a Benq :D
I am forever indebted to your greatness dear sir. Thanks.
@TheSharkpunch im very happy to hear everything turned out well
Same here, but it depends in how comfortable and confident you are in yourself in what your doing to fix your XBox.
True Genius!!! Worked like a charm!!!!

Wow THANK YOU this definately works. Simple effictive solution.
Worked perfectly for me, tyvm. Subbed.
This WORKS NO LIE! Thanks For the Vid!
