Paul, in my opinion, the advantage of the extreme defense bullet design is exactly what you showed. Reliable real world performance such as shown on your meat target but most importantly, zero need to rely on expansion. A hollow points performance, albeit critical defense or whatever, is mostly reliant on it expanding as designed. If it doesn’t, you may have pass thru or damage inadequacies. Yes, you may have to adjust your sights for a different point of aim but the extreme defender bullet design eliminates the worry of wondering if it’s going to expand properly. It doesn’t need to
I would add the meat target does not simulate a closed body with fluid. The damage cavities inflicted on ballistic gel with the Underwood ammo is pretty impressive. Loved the video!
As someone who has used hollow point ammunition in self defense... I very much appreciated the fact all of my bullets stopped in my target and didn't pass through to the park time with children behind my home. Though my experience is it really doesn't matter if there is expansion or not just so long as it hits and doesn't keep going. The HPs (Speer Gold Dot and FTX) will work with bodily fluids too though. You don't need flutes to push fluid. Really though, our bodies are not like water jugs or gelatin blocks. The amount and distribution of fluid in lung tissue, for example, is analogous to the amount and distribution of fluid in the tangerines, much more than it would be like a jug of water. Regarldess, the Speer and the FTX both exhibited more damage in this test than both FTM loadings did, so with extra fluid in the equation, that would mean either the HPs would do still more damage than they did, or the FTM bullets would only do greater damage to the point they were ay the level of the Speer GD and Hornady FTX in Paul's test. On the other hand, FTM style (fluted) bullets will not expand, period: a HP may have poor expansion on a particular shot, but it will never shrink smaller than the size of the FTM bullet, which is a solid, mono-metal projectile. So I don't really see what the advantage to be had is using the FTM bullets, especially in something such as 44 SPL, where velocities are well under 1,500 fps. Even taking the marketing hype concerning the flutes and "hydraulic pressure" at face value, basic physics would tell us that velocities would need to be quite high to develop enough energy to dump out as hydraulic force, so as to have an effect comparable to a larger projectile.

.44 Special always seemed to have a great reputation in standard loading from the early years on up to WWII. Skeeter Skelton had a soft spot for it post WWII. Sending a 246 grain bullet down range at 700-800 fps doesn’t sound that impressive, but it is still throwing a respectable sized chunk of lead. This was an informative video.
Well most underestimate bullets and sending a longer bullet with the same weight is harder to do and other factors like smokeless powder but lots of rifle rounds are not even 246 grain
thats awesome since black hill ammo is available in my country while hornady is not. in switzerland you can only use non-expanding ammo or minimally expanding ammo, which is why lapuas CEPP or fiocci black mamba was an option so far. the solid copper options like in the video are far more effective IMO
Seems odd. I'd wonder what the justification was, but seeing as how we're talking about Switzerland, I'm gonna guess some feminist was horribly misinformed and decided to pass a law anyhow. Just my guess lol.

@@markfergerson2145 its probably not leftist thinking. i guess they adopted the rules of the geneva convention for us civilians, which in a way makes sense: whats the point of regulating pistol ammo for home defense when the #1weapon in swiss home is the assault rifle (often deactivated to semi-auto)?
Travolta played a fantastic bad guy in that movie. Especially considering that no one involved was seriously trying to make a complex high brow film which would require the audience to do much thinking.
Don’t know & don’t care about what people are doing at Hornady. Just love your reviews, and am glad you reviewed .44 special ammo. This cartridge is under estimated and over looked. In the right revolver, with the low pressure, your gun should out live you, while delivering excellent self defense capability.
✌️ My brother (IL) bought a 44 derringer for personal security. He wanted to test it out so we went to the Sheriff's gun range I had access to. The range master gave him two rounds of 44 magnum to test it out with. It's recoil drew blood on the web of our hands as we verified it worked in both barrels. The range master laughed at BILs initiation. We then let BIL try out the full auto tommy gun the department had at the range. He couldn't stop smiling! 😁
Totally understand. I have a full auto addiction. Shot tons of them. That Thompson though, it's way up on the list of favorites. Turns the intended target into swiss cheese, see?

Since rifling puts spin n the bullet, can you use an extreme defender or honey badger ammo as a long distance Philips head screw driver? Nah, probably a bad idea. ;)
If you ever get a chance to do a similar test again, I would love to see the meat target behind a car windshield using same ammo. Gut feeling is the monolithic projectiles will really excell, but a test actually proving that would be great.
@@vincedibona4687 I know he has reviewed extreme defender and shot through a car door into gelatin. I don't know of a comparison between hollow points and these modified monolithic copper bullets through barriers into realistic meat targets. Specifically if there is a opportunity to do a car windshield at a realistic angle (not just straight on to the shooter). I think that would be really interesting and in Paul's wheelhouse.

Again, greatly over simplifying
Paul Thank you for all your work, my family and I enjoy your videos. I appreciate your professional demeanor and effort you apply to being accurate and impartial. Thank you for your service.
I always thought Black Hills was drastically over-priced. Their performance is SOMETIMES a tiny bit better than much lower priced options, and often is no-better, no-worse. They seem to have "convinced" many people (some of whom were given the ammo for free in exchange for good reviews.)
They're in the same vein of "self-defense" ammo as many other specialty ammo makers. Usually drastically over-priced for about half the amount of ammo you'd normally get and they use a lot of buzz words and print a bunch of ballistics on their websites and boxes to try to convince you that it's worth the price. You're better off spending that money on some quality bullets and reloading supplies and just make your own if you're concerned about good ammo for self-defense. At least then you know for sure you've used quality components and don't have to spend a mint to just to shoot 25 or so at the range and can actually test how well they work.
@@upinarms79 It’s generally considered not the best idea to use reloads for a carry or dangerous game hunting gun when they are on the job. Reliability, as I’ve proven to myself a few times 😿 isn’t quite as good…
Meat targets aside, how these monolithic Philips-nosed projectiles would perform on the cavity of a deer or a human, seem to be the same or better in gel test comparisons. In other words, when FLUIDS come into the equation (not tangerines) where substantial hydraulic dynamics could be part of the terminal effect, I think they'd work just fine. I think they'd work almost as well as an expanding projectile while penetrating just as well as a WFN non-expanding solid copper or hard cast load. But hey, none of this stuff has emotional investment. We're just comparing terminal ballistics of various bullet types.
the oranges/tangerines are supposed to simulate lung tissue, which (hopefully? probably?) is not full of fluid before getting shot. Some air, some fluid, some soft tissue
@@utrak I know I know. It's difficult to simulate anything with total accuracy. It's a good device. I'm glad Paul uses this. Yet as an effective tool to demonstrate the differences between an expanding and non-expanding projectile? I don't know honestly. We aren't killing gel blocks to put gel in the freezer, or defending ourselves against gel blocks. But I know why the FBI uses the stuff for terminal ballistics development. It's CONSISTENT for the purpose of small changes in projectiles, metallurgy, velocity, etc. A meat target is anything but consistent, whether it's Paul's setup or an actual animal.
Lots of people do gel tests. It would serve no purpose for me to do gel. There's also the matter of the size and location of the groups. Sadly, I won't be able to test the ammo while hunting because it's prohibited for hunting in my jurisdiction.
@@PaulHarrell Well understood. Short of actual animal dispatching for whatever purposes, we'll have to rely on decades of hunter experience, comparing decades of hunter stories, compare those points of information with late developments in metallurgy, powder, manufacturing, and platforms, and make the best informed decisions we can. And the meat target is a useful tool that demonstrates things that gel, or plywood, or water jugs cannot. Thanks for the content, Paul.

Deer : glad that ain't me
"That's right humans, eat more pork!"
I enjoy watching these videos. The take away is two things.. 1st The entertainment.. 2nd The educational value from someone who knows his trade.
Another great, easy to follow, detailed, informative and entertaining video. Thanks Paul.
I really don't know how anyone can get mad at Paul Harrell he's very objective and he does avoid politics. He avoids controversial subjects but compares caliber A to caliber B and he does not get into controversy. I've been watching him for years and I've enjoyed every video I saw it I don't think he's ever said anything that I thought was objectionable. So I do wonder about someone who gets upset at Paul Harrell
Thanks Paul wishing you a great weekend.
Probably the most informative channel on guns and self defense that I can use and relate too. I find myself watching Paul's videos more and more. Please keep it up
Ammo aside, I love the radioactive target. I think I am going to track some of those down.
Didn't expect to see so many does just chilling in the background at 12:25.
Always something new to learn from Paul's excellent videos.
My favorite gun channel on RUclips.
Glad we have Paul and the meat target. Also glad I trusted my gut and avoided the screwdriver rounds....
Seen them tested in rifles for hunting and they had very promising results. The short pistols don't seem to be good for the design.
Paul actually likes them in .380.
They're essentially FMJ rounds. Once the hype dies down, people will look back and laugh years from now.
Yes. Mr. Harrell--I've watched your videos for a long time--no non-sense, well- developed, intelligent stuff. Please don't change anything you do sir!
I love Paul's Ghostbusters/hi-speed/tier1op outfit he wears
Never seen a person who has such a great knowledge of firearms. Appreciate a lot for sharing it. No hacitations to admit that I have learned a lot by watching your videos. Great job and keep it up 👍.
Thank you sir.
.44 Special always seemed to have a great reputation in standard loading from the early years on up to WWII. Skeeter Skelton had a soft spot for it post WWII. Sending a 246 grain bullet down range at 700-800 fps doesn’t sound that impressive, but it is still throwing a respectable sized chunk of lead. This was an informative video.
Similar to the standard .45 ACP.
Well most underestimate bullets and sending a longer bullet with the same weight is harder to do and other factors like smokeless powder but lots of rifle rounds are not even 246 grain
Honest, competent people are invaluable to our country. The world, even.
thats awesome since black hill ammo is available in my country while hornady is not.
in switzerland you can only use non-expanding ammo or minimally expanding ammo, which is why lapuas CEPP or fiocci black mamba was an option so far. the solid copper options like in the video are far more effective IMO
Seems odd. I'd wonder what the justification was, but seeing as how we're talking about Switzerland, I'm gonna guess some feminist was horribly misinformed and decided to pass a law anyhow. Just my guess lol.
@@evilblackcat6357 We are a collateral demage of Hollywood painting expanding bullets as evil... the Honey Badger ammo is for sale here in Switzerland, now if we actually had the right to carry...
@@doejohn8674 More expansion = less risk of overpenetration, less risk of collateral damage (i. e. wounded/dead bystanders). Stupid lawmakers...
@@connorwinter9257 I live in the USA and know better about *our* politicians. I would have thought better about Swiss politicians... but apparently Stupid Leftist Thinking(tm) has infected politicians worldwide.
By the numbers, boys.
1) Accuracy test 3:51
2) Chronograph 6:56
3) Let’s go crunch the numbers 9:33
4) Meat target 12:02

Wait what's going on at Hornady? I haven't heard anything
attempting to force the jab on employees
@@Clever-Name Well that's some horse shit
Finally a target where I can see the holes. Good job keep using them.
These targets remind me of the movie Broken Arrow; "Would you mind not shooting at the thermonuclear weapons?"
Some people just want to watch the world burn
Travolta played a fantastic bad guy in that movie. Especially considering that no one involved was seriously trying to make a complex high brow film which would require the audience to do much thinking.
@@sheldoniusRex Well, it had Christian Slater...
Things in here don't respond well to bullets.
Why does the department have a FA Thompson? Do they use it for duty?
Totally understand. I have a full auto addiction. Shot tons of them. That Thompson though, it's way up on the list of favorites. Turns the intended target into swiss cheese, see?
@@joshuagibson2520 IDK why that department has it but I think EVERYONE should be able to have one if they feel like it!!
@@BabyCharlotteschannel I agree. 100%
@@joshuagibson2520 Dayton Ohio police have one on display at they're range office. Many were issued during the riots back in the 60's and came from US government surplus leftover from WW2.
I really liked the H&K UMP 45 smg. Talk about a blast! 😁
18 minutes past video debut and I’m 110th ...! That’s Paul Harrells channel for you ... !!
Since rifling puts spin n the bullet, can you use an extreme defender or honey badger ammo as a long distance Philips head screw driver? Nah, probably a bad idea. ;)
I like that....lol
The person on the receiving end is definitely screwed.
I really like Paul's videos, yes he gets a little long winded but it is necessary because of some people, he is very educational and I enjoy that
Thinking back to other videos, rounds using a similar Phillips screwdriver bullet design didn't have much or any deformation.
Copper is a 3 on the Mohs hardness scale. Lead is 1.5
The main reason I like you is NO politics. I prefer your knowledge.
Deer walks up "Yep, stopped by the 1st layer of fleece"
You know they're out there gathering intelligence for deer season.
Nice Job As Always!.....and the deer in the background were Priceless Paul !
I thought the deer would stick around to see the meat target results...
If you ever get a chance to do a similar test again, I would love to see the meat target behind a car windshield using same ammo. Gut feeling is the monolithic projectiles will really excell, but a test actually proving that would be great.
IraqVeteran8888 has done something similar.
Interesting concept.
Paul has done cars as defensive positions.
A meat target added to the mix would be interesting.
Apparently Paul is so damn wholesome and likeable, his mere presence attracts more whitetails in 5 minutes than I can seem to actively seek out in 4 years hunting seasons combined. Nice.
Me: *Does a quick google search as to what Paul is talking about in regards to Hornady*.............no wonder Paul hates talking about current events and politics regardless of which way he leans
What happened?
I'd bet he doesn't really lean much. At least not to extremes.
@@jerbus7956 Hornady was going to mandate getting vaccinated for its workers. This naturally caused a massive shitstorm among the usual subjects. 🙄
@@jerbus7956 to greatly over simplify, basically Hornday was gonna comply with the Biden Vaccine mandate for businesses with 100+ employees to meet OSHA Standards , possible lost of employment for those who refused to get vaccinated, and the internet shat a brick and sent the internet rage mobs after Hornady. Again, greatly over simplifying
tsk tsk Hornady, what part of "do not comply" did you not understand?

Thank you for all your work, my family and I enjoy your videos. I appreciate your professional demeanor and effort you apply to being accurate and impartial.
Thank you for your service.
Watching Paul count out points he's making routinely gives me the giggles.
Interesting results 😁 I love the beginning where you are making a point by saying 1 and 2 is the middle finger! You rock
Reliability, as I’ve proven to myself a few times 😿 isn’t quite as good…
We don't know what we are talking about, that's why we listen to you.
Will someone clue me in as to what the hornady situation is?
I’m guessing it’s cause they agreed with the vaccine mandate. I think they’ve reversed course though.
Right?
Paul Harrell may be the most sophisticated firearms professor on youtube.

Amazing videos from Paul. None better.
@@exothermal.sprocket Yeah that's fair. Still, it'd be a shame if he switched to gel, gotta have that meat target magic
