That's unfortunate about audiences not caring about what the creators have to say. I've always found the funniest parts of back issues to be when you talk about the creators and their stories about creating the books and the insane guidelines or requests they have to fulfill with editors.
I desperately want the new framing device of Sal's Comic Creator Interviews from this point on be "we're going to talk about this niche little book we both like but it just gets so tangential we actually go deep on comics." Because this was funny, entertaining & enlightening in a very unique way.
This interview felt so fluid and light hearted! Other ones have seemed more formal, but ,Sal, You should definitely remember that we come to ComicPop for your personality too!
Tom has grown in my eyes due to Sal and Bennys interviews. God bless you guys. Keep on keeping on. BvP is great and BackIssues reminded me of that. Dredd vs Predator is also great just throwing that out there
This might be my favorite interview with a comic book creator ever. Even if you don't love his Batman run, which I know was polarizing (I really liked it, except for the giant marketing middle finger from DC regarding the wedding issue), you've gotta appreciate Tom's love for comic books. You can tell he's a true fan and really appreciates being able to write comics for a living, and just enjoys talking with us fellow nerds. Great stuff!
My wife is not really a comic book person by any means. But I bought her King's run on The Vision and Mister Miracle, because she loves that tone of storytelling. It was a little difficult to get her started, but once she did, she went nuts for them.
I hope during this interview Sal took a minute to realise that he's nailing it. The way they always try to steer the conversation back to BvP is great. You guys seem so chummy. I also like that King wasn't afraid to disagree with Sal on some stuff, it's cool to get that insider knowledge. This was great.
That's such a coincidence too because I literally rewatched the original Batman vs Predator Back Issues. You know what this means, right? We need a video of Sal reading his original pitch for Alien vs Predator vs Terminator
Sal, seriously don't worry about that percentage of the audience who doesn't care about creator insights. I guess I fancy myself a writer, too, and the impact that your conversations with DeMatteis and Zdarsky and, now, Tom King have had on my writing is immeasurably helpful. Keep doing it for us one percenters, I say!
I've seen all the interviews Sal has done with King over the past week and I got to say I dig that he knows his Batman wasn't for him, has mentioned it to King and King and him not only riff on it at times but just seem to have an acknowledgement of it without ruining the positive/chill vibe. Sal brings out the person in people, really talks to them without being irritating or annoying, without trying too hard or forcing the conversation to go in one direction after another. Hats off to you man, I love these interviews.
Nah, I care for these creator interviews. I don’t understand how anyone can say they have favorite stories and not think about what the creators were doing when they made the stories and why their choices impacted the final results that we love or dislike. It’s great to see king back on the channel again!
I Love this, I'm glad u got one with just him. Ur one for Baltimore was great, but those three guys were hard to keep on track. With that being said. I'd love to see it again. Hopefully tom king will be back on. You should try a fake pitch or a writer's room with a writer one day. Might be fun :)
Maybe it's because I'd like to be in the industry some day, but I'm surprised to hear people aren't that interested in hearing about the behind the scenes from the creators, because I live for that shit
Love off the rack, love back issues, elseworlds exchange, and everything else on the channel, but the creator interviews are my definitely my favorite thing on comic pop
Think this was the coolest 'interview' to date. Felt more like two best friends shooting shit than just one of the top two comic youtube channels and one of DC's hottest writers of the decade. Totally checking out Batman vs Predator after this. Sounds like it'll be right up there for Batman/Spawn for me. (Likewise, don't read the sequel. lol) As far as Marvel vs DC event or whatever... of course would love to see that again. I had just started reading comics and still vividly remember the covers for it on some Walmart display shelf near the toy section.. when picking up the latest issue of Sonic the Hedgehog. Course I'd totally settle for a maxiseries in an Ultimate-like universe where a young, fairly recently bit Peter Parker became the second Robin. Little crossover events or what if stories here and there like that.
I love this guy. I really hope he comes back to Marvel one day. For all the crap people give this guy he is a really cool dude. I'd love to see him do a Captain America story in his eerie Black Mirror style of writing like he did for Vision.
Vision isn’t like Black Mirror where Tom King has never described his writing in that way. Vision is more like the American Beauty of comics and is closer to Ex Machina which dropped 2 years before Black Mirror got picked up by Netflix in the U.S. Then there would be no Black Mirror without The Twilight Zone where the original was a better show.
@@DanV900 these are opinions fam. The tone feels closer to Black Mirror and by that virtue it also takes inspirations from the content that came before it like Twilight Zone. I didn't watch Ex Machina when it cam out but even then i don't think it matters. The point i was making is still the same. Tome Kinga specific style of writing fits better at Marvel or at least with more obscure characters he can experiment with without any constraints.
Somehow, I expected King to behave a little differently. I don't know why, but I was anticipated a quieter, contemplative man who was a little more succinct in his words. But here he is being kind of a dork with Sal.
I always had this image in my head that Tom King must be the most argent douche bag, who is an "outsider" coming in and doing a couple of comics. Well I'm quite ashamed that a thought that after the Baltimore panel and this show. He does seem like nice guy with passion for what he is doing.
He was an intern and later assistant for Chris Claremont before joining the CIA which he talked about on iFanboy. Geoff Johns and Kevin Feige were both interns for Richard Donner. Certain writers are pursued to write comics and he actually had prior experience in the industry.
@@ShawnWeeded510 People love working with Grant Morrison and people just assuming the worst of writers like you just did is frankly asinine. Grant Morrison is really into the Silver Age and doesn’t like comics being so dark. He is well respected by his peers. This isn’t a John Byrne situation where his collaborators have been very critical of him. You don’t have to like someone’s work, but thinking Grant Morrison isn’t a cool guy where you can’t seem to separate the art from the artist is certainly narrow minded.
Hey Sal and ComicPoP team! Your Channel is simply awsome! I Love, watch and listen to it since years! it feels like a family channel since I was there when it grew and evolved and changed but still stayed loyal to its core. ComicPop really means alot to Me. More then you can imagin! Thank You for that!! Thank You for your work!
Great episode. Love the vibe, love the conversation. You should try doing a gbu with Tom King and another creator. Would love to see something like that.
Love all the interviews Sal's been a part of lately. My question for Tom King would be does he know he's making the criterion collection version of comic books? When I read parts of his work, I get this sense of atmosphere, that reminds me of a French New Wave movie or something more cerebral.
Go to the channel's playlists, scroll to "Baltimore Comic Con LIVE 2020", the Friday-Hall A video and around the 5-hour mark is where the interview is.
Robocop vs Terminator is great and I was hoping that it would get referenced. I thought we were going there when Frank Miller was mentioned and then it didn’t happen.
@@comicpop I loved the interview though and did appreciate hearing about Batman vs Predator after it was mentioned on the Absolute Comics podcast with Benny where I also really liked that interview. One of the few good things in 2020 is all these great interviews Sal’s been getting to do, well deserved too
Couldint agree more shove this channel down people’s throats till we get the viewer ship up. Love you guys!!
Sal is really getting good at these interviews. He’s striking the right balance between having a conversation and a one sided interview.
That's unfortunate about audiences not caring about what the creators have to say. I've always found the funniest parts of back issues to be when you talk about the creators and their stories about creating the books and the insane guidelines or requests they have to fulfill with editors.

Same. I was a bit skeptical of that, but I suppose Sal would know.

Sal and Tom talking B V P!!!!!!!!!! Count me in!!! All these discussions from the last few weeks have been such great content. Thank you!

That's such a coincidence too because I literally rewatched the original Batman vs Predator Back Issues. You know what this means, right? We need a video of Sal reading his original pitch for Alien vs Predator vs Terminator

How a person so energetic as Tom king can write stories so depressed?
