What kinds of cool speakers can I build with a bunch of Eminence Pro Drivers?

  • Every once in awhile I find a smoking good deal on Craigslist and this is one I simply couldn't pass up. This guy was selling a bunch of Eminence Pro drivers that he originally bought to build some huge rave speakers, like those enormous setups they use at rave clubs.
    Eminence Omega 18, Kappa 15, Delta 10, PSD 2002
What would you build with all these speakers?

By the way your videos are getting better all the time.

Thank you! Next is an external mic so much voice comes across better. Practice practice practice.

Lots of potential there, tonight I will look of the specs on all these drivers. I see I need to look on craigslist more often lol

I noticed on the Eminence website, they are very detailed and provide box design variations, as well as application suggestions for all their speakers. For example, if I remember correctly, with the 18" woofers, if I'm not concerned about seismic subsonic rattling low bass with a 7 foot cabinet, they'll work in a 4 foot vented cabinet, (just enough to make some serious slam a little higher in the low bass region, where most musical information rarely goes beyond). So, for me, the smaller the cabinets, the more practical they are, (and easier to move around). I thought it was excellent of Eminence to go to such great lengths about protecting the giant woofers with high pass filters, offer the myriad of box designs and their respective response, (which I would not be surprised if they actually built and tried the designs Vs just running them through software).

The speaker I am planning on building is a sealed speaker using the 15" Dayton Audio DCS385-4 33.7Hz@ 3db down. in a 3.9ft3 enclosure. It will go as low as many ported designs but sound way better. and the DCS385-4 is only $120. Crossed around 71Hz will be 91.5db efficient but will use the higher efficient 8" Eminence driver with a custom crossover this will be a 4 way using compression drivers for between 789Hz and 3.9kHz.

That's a big cabinet! I know I'll likely end up needing refrigerator size cabinets for those Eminence Pro Drivers I picked up recently, if I want to port them for the most bass output.

On the 18" woofers they can go down to as low as 42Hz @3db down in a 8 ft3 ported cabinet. In a 4 ft3 ported cabinet they would go down to 51.31hz @3db down. They do not have a very flat response at all so would need a lot of crossover work. These speakers are really made for playing very loud on a stadium for a band or musical. Very efficient speakers tend to not be able to go as low in frequency and require a very large box. The Delta 10A would be good for a midrange average efficiency in the usable rage is 97.5db I would put in in its own sealed enclosure in a 0.317 ft3 enclosure and be good for 148Hz @3db down but would need at least a third order on the crossover to tame the peaked high frequency cut off. The Kapa 15LFA can go lower in frequency at 39Hz than the 18" but needs a 7.8 ft3 if you place the 15" in a 4 ft3 cabinet it would only get to about 53hz @3db down. and if you use a box too small for the driver they will peaky around 95Hz. I have not looked at the Compression driver yet. These drivers would be great for a band speakers but I would never have considered them for home HIFI. As far as an efficient midrange I would of got something like an 6" or 8". 6 or 8" high efficient midbase drivers will not beam like a larger driver. For a small room like in a home living room you want wide dispersion. and these speakers because they are made to play higher in frequency will beam at those frequencies. But beaming in these pro speakers does not matter so much on a large stage because you would have several aiming at different sections. You can get way better results with smaller diameter speaker that are still efficient with good vocals for a home HIFI. You could make these work for a home hifi but with all the effort and wanting to keep the boxes small they will not go as low in frequency. If you got a good deal on these I would sell them on Ebay and use the money to get drivers more suitable for a home hifi. If you decide to continue with a project using these drivers I could design a custom crossover but would need a way to get it to you. The 18" would not make a good subwoofer because it does not go low enough in frequency. High efficiency large diameter woofers are not really practical below 70hz or so. Those lower frequencies would not really take advantage of a light weight cone. 88 to 91db is good for most subwoofers as far as a fast moving cone for those frequencies. There are some other pro 15" drivers that would work good as a woofer for a hifi but not these. The Most useful of these drivers are the 10" for use as a midbase driver. If you design a speaker that uses a 15" driver than you will want it to go lower than what these are capable of. All of these drivers would play very loud but with the sacrifice of low frequency response.

Thanks that's fantastic insight. I noticed how whacky the frequency responses are on them... Agree they likely have to make compromises for it to get ultra loud in a stage, Vs at home. The idea of reselling them had crossed my mind as well.

My favorite pro 8" midbase is the Eminence Beta-8A 8 ohm 8" or the Eminence Alpha-6C 6" Midrange 4 Ohm, FaitalPRO 8FE200 8" Professional Midbass 4 Ohm, FaitalPRO 8FE200 8" Professional Midbass 8 Ohm, Eminence Alpha-6A 6-1/2" Midrange 8 Ohm.

tough call, those low xmax high sensitivity drivers like those big pro boxes, folded horns etc. I would pair two 15s and see what a traditional ported enclosure sounds like for the lows.Horizontal forward firing and use as a stand for the highs. Maybe try semi open baffle with the 10s n the tweets. Never been a big fan of 18s.

Thank you! How does one design a folded horn for an 18"? Also I'm kind of curious if it would work in a replica Klipschorn style speaker.

@@wattspeakers Ive never built a folded horn so Id just study examples and play it by ear. I think they use 1/4 wave math to figure out the length of the horn but its witchcraft anyway you look at to me. The klips thing would be a good place to start. My thought is pro drivers are meant for "play thru" vs "play back", big venue vs small room, maybe thats why they sound a little different. Im no expert tho. lol

I liked that... "Play through vs playback." I always found it ironic that some will spend HUGE money in pursuit of a realistic playback experience of live music where they recorded the pro sound "playthrough".
With studio recordings remastered stuff etc. It makes sense, but having an expensive high end system to playback a bunch of PA speakers just gets my funny bone, if only because of the irony of it.

I've seen them on PS audio and they're supposed to sound great. I'm not sure I have the time or patience to be proficient with an open baffle, but I like the suggestion. Provided the Woofers can work in free air, it might work out nice, plus they're as cool from the back as they are from the front, so showing them off would be neat.
