Another thing that I suggest for the first build: don't worry about the look and sound of the final product. Just remember to study, especially T/S parameters, how do they work and crossovers. A well built crossover is 50% of the work
ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗΣ ΜΑΡΤΙΝΟΣ Metal? You need bass and good mids. I suggest a 6.5" woofer in a box about 18 liters. With a 25mm silk dome tweeter as they are very detailed but not ear raping like klipsch
So nice to see someone actually sharing their knowledge on audio. It's such a closed (sometimes pretentious) community! Kirby, you're a breath of fresh air.
I'm so glad you mentioned the looks in there!! I see so many people saying it doesn't matter, its a speaker, its only supposed to SOUND good.... I want my speaker to look at LEAST as good as they sound!! It IS something that matters!! altho maybe not that much in a first build.... Great video Kirby! I think a LOT of people are going to start their first project because of that video serie!!! Keep it up!
Kirby, I see some criticism in the comments but feel that you aren't attempting to address the minutia of speaker building but give an overall basic understanding. As you've said in your videos, we need to do our own research as well and make our own decisions. Picking at your videos because you did or didn't mention or explain something is unfair. Please know there are lots of viewers who appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Keep up the great work!! I really like the music you use in your build videos, its calming and coordinates well with watching a build. Thanks
Would you consider doing a build video on a soundbar type speaker that your TV can actually sit on top of? I would love to make one and would like to see how you go about it.
I have some questions about enclosures, drivers and their acoustic relationship. Firstly - Older/vintage enclosure shape was generally tall, wide and shallow whereas modern speakers tend to be tall, narrow and deep. What is the general sound you get out of older cabinet shapes vs new? Are newer ones better or different? Secondly - Is there a general guide for how big the speakers (mainly woofer) should be in relationship to the cabinet? Is there a reason that a 4"or 6"woofer shouldn't be used in a cabinet that is, say, 500mm wide and 700mm tall? Is there a such thing as too small and too big? Thirdly - Is it necessary to pad the inside of bigger cabinets or are there advantages/disadvantages to installing padding vs nothing? Fourthly - Do you do any special calculations of how the cabinet space and shape will interact with the drivers or is that too in depth and unnecessary? I'm asking because I have some vintage speakers (Goodman XB 25) that I need to replace all the drivers for. The woofers were missing and one of the tweeters was broken so I'll just buy new ones. They do have some 8"radio shack subwoofers as replacements which I think are good but I'm wondering they're somehow a bad match for those cabinets. Also because I modified two sets of big enclosures maybe 20 years ago with mixed results. I had almost no idea about acoustics so I probably did too many things wrong. One set sounded okay, the other set ended up sounding weak. I can more into detail on the specifics of those if anyone wants to talk about that.
what are Ur thought on using focal car speakers in a bookshelf set up? ive had focals in my car and there amazing , so much detail and clarity no distortion
Have you ever done a video about full-range drivers? I'm wondering what ohm I should use in my 12 volt portable speaker? I purchased an inexpensive 2.1 amp board 50 watt x 2 100 watt sub.
hi. i am building a portable speaker and i want an oval (pill shaped) speaker driver. with a good sound quality and full range of sound. i am going to use 2 of them. left and right. can you recommend on a good quality speaker for that purpose ? thanks.
They are harder to make. If you think about a 200HZ pure sine wave bass note the speaker has to respond by moving through 200 movement cycles a second, following the input waveform precisely. At 16KHz it has to move through 16,000 cycles in the same length of time and still follow the input waveform as precisely as possible. That second feat requires the materials to be much more rigid, yet lightweight. You can have very light materials cheaply, or you can have very rigid materials cheaply, but you can't have low weight AND rigidity at once cheaply. The second factor that drives up the cost is that tweeters have to be made to much finer tolerances than low and mid range speakers. That means the materials cost more and the process of making those materials into a speaker also costs more.
I was thinking of grabbing a new pair of Polk R300s and swapping the driver and tweeter from parts express, specifically Dayton Audio DC28FS-8 1-1/8" and Tang Band W6-2144 6-1/2". I figured I'd get a two-way passive crossover at 3000hz. I'm buying the r3000 specfifically for the enclosure at 80$ a pair Canadian. Any tips? This would be my first speaker build and I really want to see what these Tang band drivers can do.
I bought only 2 inch ghxamp and aiyima speaker and amplifiers. I also bought a narra wood here in palawan. Problem is I can not make mistakes cutting narra wood because it is too expensive. It is a one time cut and trim and making holes. Heavy wood but worth the sound quality.
Great thoughts! I have a ton of detailed questions, could you point me in the right direction? 1. Is it better to keep drivers all the same brand or can you mix? 2. How do Ohms play into driver choice, again can you mix? Any tutorials out there for wiring options? Is a 3 way speaker build too advanced for newbs?
I'm enjoying this series on DIY speaker building. You keep mentioning driver data sheets. Maybe it's coming up, but if not, can I suggest a short vid looking over a driver's data sheet and how to read it?
Clean well shot and edited with clear concise information. Love the obvious honest passion you have for your channel thank you! Looking forward to future videos!
Hey Kirby Any thoughts on box size for a set of 18" JBL drivers. the project will have a three way crossover...... they were givin to me so i would like to use them.. enjoyed all the videos! thanks. tim
I am a newbe in the make speakers. Today i want construct 2 sorround speakers and center speaker for expand mi stereo system in home theater. My receiver is a Onkyo txsr-805 and my speakers are Polk audio RTIA9 floorstand. My question is: Wath speakers (woofer tweeter) i will select? I like the soud of my polks and i want find the same harmonic. Note: You chanel is very good and i learnt too much about. This encouraged me to begin this project. Thanks. Regars, Jorge from Chile.
Great video. I am one of the small army you have accumulated over the past month. The only thing I am still not sure on is picking and using batteries. Would love to see a video explaining them.
I’m adding speakers inside of a small harp (a Harpsicle, with an approximate interior useable box size of 5 x 1.5 x 28 inches, 5 x 3 x 28 total if there was no wooden spine down the middle of the soundboard supporting the strings). I think I’d prefer to use the speaker type that turns a surface itself into a speaker. Can you help me figure out what I need for this? I suspect I need two 4-ohm transducers (I found a couple small enough to fit in the space between the string band spine and the outer case), a crossover for them (if crossovers are used for these sort of speaker) and a way to attach a 9-volt battery for power (though I’d love to be able to do without the battery). Any recommendations?
as always love the vid. not sure if this is your thing but one of the things they do in car reviews is glamor shots. it's just a bunch of close up pans and zooms that show off the car and specifically any mods done to it. might be a cool way to showcase your gorgeous speakers. just two more cents from a stranger. keep doing what your doing man. p.s. love the sound test at the end.
Hey! Which 4x6" speaker drivers would you recommend? I will be replacing an old speaker inside a DIY Bluetooth radio that I am building, which happens to have this (odd) size.
Love your videos. You inspired me to do my first solid walnut blue tooth speaker. Question for future videos... you discussed how to chose ranges of quality in speakers. Would love to know what brand of higher end speakers you would recommend for a build. Also in future videos it would be cool to understand 2.1 boards that are good, with a power supply that's available for a good price. Thanks for all you do. It's great to see subscribers recognize your quality in style and content.
I just wanna ask. Is a 60w (30w+30w) speaker too much?? I am planning to buy a 2 channel 30+30 amp, then wire a 2 way crossover to each channel, and then wire a mid range woofer and a tweeter to each crossover. Would that be okay?
Im building a small mp3 player with 3watt amplifier. How do I know if a small speaker will perform well - high sensitivity? Recall last century, 'transistor radios' had a tiny tinny sound, but now we can buy a 'boom box' the same size which is loud enough for a party. Whats different in the full range driver inside and how to know when buying?
Hello I had a question. I am wanting to build my own bookshelf speakers to finish out my surround sound. My receiver is a onkyo that’s rated at 75 watts rms my question is do both the woofer and the tweeter need to be rated at 75 watts? Or how does that work when using a woofer and tweeter.
Parts Express IS a great place for a very wide selection of speaker drivers of all types and price ranges, but also MCM Electronics and Madisound are two other great places to get speaker drivers and other speaker related components, (x-over stuff, cabinet HW, etc.) And as far as the main title of this video goes, I also do a final side-by-side A/B/(C/D) listening comparison, (using a few of my favorite well known CDs and a special 4-way driver switch that I made), between any/all of the potential drivers that I'm considering for a speaker project to make sure I get the absolute cleanest and best sounding ones!... This is especially important to do with the midrange drivers, because I have found *tremendous* differences in overall sound quality and clarity, even between mids of the exact same size and type/design... And even though in general you get what you pay for with speaker quality, I have definitely come across a few really inexpensive drivers, (sometimes even "free", scrapped from another old or damaged speaker), that sound WAY better than some MUCH more expensive new ones, so a high price shouldn't be the main and definitely not the only deciding factor in guaranteeing a good sound... You definitely have to listen to them too! (As I'm sure *you* already know, but some people reading this may not have considered that...) I have checked out a few of your speaker building videos, and I agree with most of what you are talking about... I might just have to subscribe.
I just collect all sorts of old drivers from old speakers or cheap sets or thriftshops and based on what I have laying around I think of an enclosure type 'feels' correct for the drivers. It's going pretty well so far, already built one set of MLTL (Vifa ring radiator + Tannoy woofer, custom made crossover) and a smaller full range (FRS8 with homemade notch filter) TL. I'm planning on building a back loaded horn with a small 3" or 4" full range driver. Can't wait :D
Question, lets say we build a two way speaker and the woofer is 100db/1meter, now witch tweeter sensibility (db) are we looking for to have a balance ''volume'' without a L-Pad ? Thank you
Now can you take a low range woofer and a tweeter and put them in paralel in a large, heavily insulated sealed box and have good sound quality. from what i know you can and in some cases it sound better than with a midrange woofer. this is just a guess but i just want to check
You need a cross-over. When you build a 2-way system you often can do with a simple first or second order cross-over which need much less components than higher order cross-overs. If you omit the cross-over you are very likely to burn your tweeter at high volumes.
I would suggest you try marine speakers , my favorite is a setup of 2 tweeters 1 woofer on 2 separate boxes preferably plastic and 1 marine 10” sub or if you wanna go really cheap get any speaker and buy a can of everdry trust me it works I can fully submerge speakers and they will still play if you coated them really good inside and out
I am looking to build my own speakers and was curious if you find a brand specific? Lots of people use Dayton/Parts Express and I have heard much about Scanspeak as well. Thoughts?
When building portable active speakers (f.i. BT speakers), I would say driver efficiency (sensitivity) is about the most important spec. In theory a difference of +3dB will extend your battery-life by a factor 2. Apart from that I would look at the Thiele Small parameters, because from those you can calculate the size of your enclosure, the resonance frequency and the length of your bass-port if you build vented speakers. The looks of the driver itself are rather insignificant, first of all you want good sounding speakers with long battery life. Based on the driver you can design a good looking enclosure even though the driver itself looks horrible, in which case you can hide your driver from sight.
Hi, I love watching your videos. I was planning on making a portable speaker for myself. Could you tell what is the minimum enclosure dimension requirement for 2x52mm, 10W drivers?
Currantly doing a build with the 3" aurasound NS3 drivers. could you reccomend a tweeter and crossover for this. I am using 2 NS3 drivers per enclosure.
Kirby I have a bunch of random speakers I'm not sure if they would work together how could I go about commissioning you to build me some thing and sending them to you
Currently I'm using a frankenstein setup of marantz precision series P-830 speakers with the woofers of a set of Pioneer S-Z94's. At the moment it sounds amazing, but would it be worth building a custom housing? Paid 10 euros for the P-830's with a perfect housing but woofers with foamrot, also paid 10 euros for the S-Z94's with 1 broken tweeter in one of the speakers.
hannes something IMHO building a completely new set of speakers would be a better idea. That way, you would know the thiele-small parameters of the drivers to calculate the ideal enclosure, and even spending less than $150 you could buy much better drivers (store-bought speakers usually don't have great drivers to keep the cost down, especially when factoring in their profit margin, amplifier, assembly cost...). You can check a popular and tested design (by zachaudio, the overnight sensations, or the ribbon "diy speedsters" which zeos reviewed) if you're interested.
Thank you Kirby for your awesome videos ! And congratulations for your well deserved success... One question remains though (half joke half serious) : your earrings (great ones !)... do they influence the way you receive music ? Keep up with the good work !! Greetings from Paris, France...
Sir i have instrumental speaker 12"x 500w mid.300w and twitter 300w. How to make dividing network for this and my amp is 2000w. Thank you. Im from Philippines.
I have been searching for a way to run two separate boom-box speakers via Bluetooth. For me its no wires and being portable. The output from my mixing board would need to plug into a the Bluetooth transmitter. would I need a transmitter for each channel or is there a transmitter that will broadcast to two separate Bluetooth devices?
I want to get 2 Dayton Audio ND105-4 and 1 Dayton tweeter with this I want to do a DIY Boombox.. my amplifier its a TPA3116D2 100wx2 (best power @ 4 ohms) my question its how I can get 4 ohms with 2 speaker and tweeter and crossover?
Hi, One quick question.. may be really stupid.. I have 2 3W4Ohms speaker, can i make it 20W4Ohms, is it possible? if not why.. what is factor that define wattage of a speaker... Thanks in advance.
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching and good luck on your project!

How about the watt power? Does it matter and how does it affect my system. If I would do a 2 way system. How do I match the different speakers to the amp?
Interesting video and nice website. I noticed that you order parts from Parts Express. They are in Springboro, Ohio. I grew up a few minutes away in Middletown. Been there quite a few times, I love that place!
Hey Kirby! Can you make a video about cheap audio amplifiers from eBay such as PAM8403? From my experience they can provide decent audio quality for close to no money.
Hey Kirby great videos man, i wonder, did you try any chinese speaker drivera are there any good quality speakers that can be bought from aliexpress for example?
Will need to watch all of your videos 💯 Learning to build PC vs Monsters - mine requires 2 speakers + the other requires 2 speakers. Lots to learn 💯 cheers for the playlist and plain English used 💪💯 Budget depends on speakers that fit the Monster. As for the smaller one that cheap as chips. $2,000 should do it for sound and other additional thoughts towards things to out pump the junk Bluetooth speaker trash they use around here 🔥 😂😂
Hello Kirby Meets Audio great vids. Not sure if you or your viewers can help.. I want to make a Blue tooth Box with these parts i had for years.. Two 6.5" 3 way speaker 240 watt max power each. One 10" speaker 120 watt TPA3116D2 Bluetooth 4.2 Digital 2.1 Audio Amplifier Board DC 12-24V 100W+50W+50W from ebay.. does it seem like an ok setup, im new to this.] The 10 inch sub is old and was never used. its not in the original package box so don't know what brand it is. Its an heavy well built sub with black metal frame. I want to build a box for this speaker and the two 6.5" speakers. Is there a way to find out the brand or box size to build. I found this info on the side of it. model number RD-0008332 Impedance 4 ohm Power 120 w Date 2000.10
Hi Kirby, I hope your doing good. Excellent series with lots of useful information. Quite the selection process to build them right. Even more subs. Take care, C.
I'd like to add a correction I think, don't worry what the look like, worry about what they will sound like. That's why you build speakers. Form follows function. For everyone out there I can tell you across the board SB Audience are the "best" speaker drivers for the money, better than 99% of what's out there. Only thing, can only get them from Madisound. But still decent prices. SB Audience (Indonesia) is the only speaker builder that I know is 100% vertically integrated. In other words, no outside parts go into their speakers. Everything in house. From tweets, to mids, to woofers and subs, they really are a hard speaker to be, especially for the price. A 3 way tower speaker would run $300 on up for each speaker with SB Audiience entry level drivers. And still will sound great because they only make "Professional level" speakers.
higher power speakers on a lower power amp allways works, but not the other way around (atleast not for max. volume). watch the impedance, this is more important
hopefully anybody can help me : I have a HPM40 from pionneer that I would like to recycle into a smaller enclosure. I would like to change the woofer ( 10'' ) for a smaller 6'' but keep all the other component. If I find a 6'' woofer with the same spec, will it work it the rest ? thanks !
Another thing that I suggest for the first build: don't worry about the look and sound of the final product.
Just remember to study, especially T/S parameters, how do they work and crossovers.
A well built crossover is 50% of the work
Fully agree!
hi...i want to build speakers for METAL MUSIC.....can you help me please?
ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗΣ ΜΑΡΤΙΝΟΣ Metal?
You need bass and good mids.
I suggest a 6.5" woofer in a box about 18 liters.
With a 25mm silk dome tweeter as they are very detailed but not ear raping like klipsch
Jeremy Clarkson ok thanks
To me, designing and building the crossover is the trickiest part.

Totally nuts! I appreciate you all so much!
The mention on the "Making It" podcast might have helped a bit. You know you've hit the big time when those guys talk about you. :-)
Kirby Meets Audio what if I use 4 inch jbl cs7
coaxial speaker driver ?
Would you consider doing a build video on a soundbar type speaker that your TV can actually sit on top of? I would love to make one and would like to see how you go about it.
To summarize: You pays yer money you makes yer choice.

Question, lets say we build a two way speaker and the woofer is 100db/1meter, now witch tweeter sensibility (db) are we looking for to have a balance ''volume'' without a L-Pad ? Thank you
I love you kirby you are the best worker 👷 😘😘😘
I’m thinking about getting a Dayton Audio ND140-4 to replace the Logitech z313 woofer, and I’m making a bigger box for it
Now can you take a low range woofer and a tweeter and put them in paralel in a large, heavily insulated sealed box and have good sound quality. from what i know you can and in some cases it sound better than with a midrange woofer. this is just a guess but i just want to check
You need a cross-over. When you build a 2-way system you often can do with a simple first or second order cross-over which need much less components than higher order cross-overs. If you omit the cross-over you are very likely to burn your tweeter at high volumes.
Czar Zenana Alright, thanks!
Awesome, it is a lot to learn!
Do you have a recommendation on types of speakers for an outdoor application? One where it may be humid but no in direct rain.
Hey , can i know , wht diffrent sound out with flat cone and regular cone
Awesome content Kirby!
+Joshua Cullinan Thank you!
I am trying to get interested in your channel and you are very knowledgeable. When are you going to build something?
Currantly doing a build with the 3" aurasound NS3 drivers. could you reccomend a tweeter and crossover for this.
I am using 2 NS3 drivers per enclosure.
What is the name of the 4th Speaker that is showed at the beginning? I like it's design.
We need step 4 man! Loving the videos
YEAH WHERE IS IT?
Yeah the most important step, and I'm really really low on budget 😩
Kirby I have a bunch of random speakers I'm not sure if they would work together how could I go about commissioning you to build me some thing and sending them to you
can u plz connect all your speaker that u have built together
Is it necessary that the midrange driver have same wattage capacity of woofer?
I want to get 2 Dayton Audio ND105-4 and 1 Dayton tweeter with this I want to do a DIY Boombox.. my amplifier its a TPA3116D2 100wx2 (best power @ 4 ohms) my question its how I can get 4 ohms with 2 speaker and tweeter and crossover?
Hi, One quick question.. may be really stupid.. I have 2 3W4Ohms speaker, can i make it 20W4Ohms, is it possible? if not why.. what is factor that define wattage of a speaker... Thanks in advance.
Hello can you recommend the best 1" or smaller driver?
Thanks for the awesome advice you give!!! They are really helping now that I am building my own portable bluetooth speaker.
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching and good luck on your project!
How about the watt power? Does it matter and how does it affect my system. If I would do a 2 way system. How do I match the different speakers to the amp?
Brother, I need two small 4 ohm 3 watt speakers, what do you have?
Interesting video and nice website.
I noticed that you order parts from Parts Express. They are in Springboro, Ohio. I grew up a few minutes away in Middletown. Been there quite a few times, I love that place!
Hey Kirby! Can you make a video about cheap audio amplifiers from eBay such as PAM8403? From my experience they can provide decent audio quality for close to no money.
I'm actually working on a few videos right now with the topic of "best cheap speakers", so i'll for sure include that! Thanks for watching.
Hi Kirby, thank you for your awesome work and videos. Your speakers looks realy nice and I can feel your passion in your productions.
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
How come small iphone speaker sound better than 1-2" generic ones?
Hey Kirby great videos man, i wonder, did you try any chinese speaker drivera are there any good quality speakers that can be bought from aliexpress for example?
very nice info
Will need to watch all of your videos 💯
Learning to build PC vs Monsters - mine requires 2 speakers + the other requires 2 speakers.
Lots to learn 💯 cheers for the playlist and plain English used 💪💯 Budget depends on speakers that fit the Monster.
As for the smaller one that cheap as chips.
$2,000 should do it for sound and other additional thoughts towards things to out pump the junk Bluetooth speaker trash they use around here 🔥 😂😂
Awesome video, very informative!
Thank you!
THANK YOU! VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! WORKS!! BLESSINGS!
Guys, where can I buy Dayton Audio in the UK?

What 3" speakers would u recommend for loud out door speaker for a atv
Have you heard any Seas or Eton drivers?
I want to create a bamboo bluetooth speaker, what type of driver can I use?
Hello Kirby Meets Audio great vids.
Not sure if you or your viewers can help..
I want to make a Blue tooth Box with these parts i had for years..
Two 6.5" 3 way speaker 240 watt max power each.
One 10" speaker 120 watt
TPA3116D2 Bluetooth 4.2 Digital 2.1 Audio Amplifier Board DC 12-24V 100W+50W+50W from ebay.. does it seem like an ok setup, im new to this.]
The 10 inch sub is old and was never used. its not in the original package box so don't know what brand it is. Its an heavy well built sub with black metal frame.
I want to build a box for this speaker and the two 6.5" speakers.
Is there a way to find out the brand or box size to build.
I found this info on the side of it.
model number RD-0008332
Impedance 4 ohm
Power 120 w
Date 2000.10
I found a pair of 300 Ohm drivers for 60 bucks. Together with a amplifier, isn't that a good deal?
Can I use JBL a200si coaxial speakers to make a 2.1 boombox??
In terms of looks how should it be ported... should zi measure myself first... let me go to my bedroom draw...
Hi Kirby, I hope your doing good. Excellent series with lots of useful information. Quite the selection process to build them right. Even more subs. Take care, C.
Thanks for watching, C!
Can someone link what i need if i want to make car speakers ans subwoofer into diy portable bluetooth speaker?
love the channel
Thank you, Don!
greatings from Switzerland
You could always put a attenuation circuit after the crossover to match driver spl better.
sir how to buy tagg sonic angle 1 speaker Drivers ??
Very good!!!! :D
Can anyone help me to plan on building PC speakers with BT module? Small or if bigger I could mount them just behind desk top so they stay hidden.
can i use 2 peerless 30w rms full range speakers with an 12v 2*25 w sms amplifier? or would it not sounds good?
higher power speakers on a lower power amp allways works, but not the other way around (atleast not for max. volume). watch the impedance, this is more important
Can you make a video where you turn your stretchers into blue tooth speakers? would be pretty sick! :D
hopefully anybody can help me :
I have a HPM40 from pionneer that I would like to recycle into a smaller enclosure.
I would like to change the woofer ( 10'' ) for a smaller 6'' but keep all the other component.
If I find a 6'' woofer with the same spec, will it work it the rest ?
thanks !
I like that slapped back to reality by wallet!
